Re: The "I'm applying to UCAS for 2012 entry" threadNot in exams(Original post by stifa)
Word limits on examinations and coursework? That's far beyond retarded, in my opinion.
Well, you might have shorter examination time than us, right? I had three written exams this year, and all of them lasted five hours; in my case, a word limit would be pretty much stupid.

Glad I'm not the only one. I wasn't even thinking about university until I noticed this thread yesterday and realised everyone is waaaay ahead of me so today has been spent doing some research. I'm so excited now. Are you also doing an access course? What you studying?
LMx
I've not even had my interview so I'm being really premature.
Although I have spoken to the course administrator and he said I'm almost definitely on just need to go through the formalities. -
Re: The "I'm applying to UCAS for 2012 entry" threadIt's for coursework, so we have weeks (sometimes a couple of months) to write it. Word limits in an exam would be stupid, I agree(Original post by stifa)

Re: The "I'm applying to UCAS for 2012 entry" threadAye, but they can get it wrong after all(Original post by Accalia)
Yep... 750 limit for the first one, mine was just over 1000, then 1500 for the second and I got up to 2000 (but I was sneaky and when including the word count at the bottom wrote the value which didn't include quotes, which was about 100 over). I'm on WJEC, and my tutors said it'd be fine.
They're the ones marking it so I'd like to think they weren't lying to me

Probably a clever thing with the not including quotes. Should have used a font which meant it was fewer pages as well

Re: The "I'm applying to UCAS for 2012 entry" threadThey give you far too long to do the CWs tbh.(Original post by Accalia)

Re: The "I'm applying to UCAS for 2012 entry" threadDon't be so quick to state unsupported 'facts' then. It has the effect of upsetting people who are in a state of anxiety about their results at a difficult time.(Original post by paddy__power)
I don't disbelieve you, but it was something my teacher was told at a conference or something for Edexcel by one of the chief examiners. There is a fair chance she badly communicated it to us and what was meant was lost in translation though
I don't really mind - I just stuck to the word counts (I had to boost mine when they were finished anyway as it was a rush job).
Don't be so accusatory.

Re: The "I'm applying to UCAS for 2012 entry" threadShow me where I stated it was a fact. We can add don't be presumptuous to your list.(Original post by carnationlilyrose)

Bought some books for my course today, it all seemed so far away but it's only 6 weeks today til induction day
I am now also considering applying for Higher English as well but don't know if I'm just getting carried away with all the excitement and thinking I'll be able to do both
I'll stop rambling now!

Re: The "I'm applying to UCAS for 2012 entry" threadI used to alter the font size of the punctuation for that very purpose, although it came in useful when I wanted it to look like I'd written more than I had(Original post by paddy__power)

How much external reading did you do for your chosen degree, might I ask? I'm planning on doing some and then bringing up topics of interest in the ps, although haven't got round to it yet. -

Re: The "I'm applying to UCAS for 2012 entry" threadTranslation: I can't show you where you said it, because you didn't, so instead I will make a comment attempting to arrogate superiority over you with only the tenuous qualification that I am older than you. That I know very little about you is of course irrelevant because I am older and therefore obviously am paragon of all things.(Original post by carnationlilyrose)

Poor effort love 2/10 -

although, how much did you read during the degree?

Re: The "I'm applying to UCAS for 2012 entry" threadLoads, but I have been reading reasonably relevant material since I was maybe 13/14 so I didn't do anything specifically for the PS. With regards to the degree: very little actually - I had already read a number of the books and found that I already knew most of it so frankly blagged it. I read a lot when I was younger so had already read (at the time of writing my statements) enough to comfortably have plenty to say for each of the subjects I was thinking of applying to.
I think, generally, most people have not read anything and certainly most have not read as much as they probably should have so if you've read a few relevant books beforehand you are probably going to be as well prepared as the vast majority of people. It really depends what your aim is and what you want to study though.
I'm not a good person to ask though as I am incredibly lazy and don't really take education very seriously at all. I favour self-study.
Oh, and if you don't have interviews you can just lie

Re: The "I'm applying to UCAS for 2012 entry" threadAye just read through them. I was given all the books the daughter of a friend of a friend had used for her English degree at Oxford for example.(Original post by Accalia)

My dad has a couple of Chemistry books from his degree lying about... if I could just overcome my fear of how thick they are, I could get something done.
Ah, well, I'll go be productive now and look at some online journals.
