Re: NHS Couch to 5k - Fitness Phobes AnonymousWell done on making the decision to make a change!(Original post by ThisIsTheLife)
Started this on Monday.
I'm 169cm (5' 6.5") weighing 93.7kg (14st 10.5lb), which gives me a whopping BMI of 32.8 - that makes me obese
.
Anyway, time to do something about it, so I'm starting the C25K programme with the aim of continuing it for the rest of my life and getting myself down to about 65kg in around a year's time - will be tough going, but as well know, the benefits are numerous.
At the moment I don't eat too unhealthily - probably just too frequent on the old takeaways, but any food I eat at home is good, healthy, home-prepared, but probably with larger portions than I really should be eating. So it's just a matter of limiting the takeaways a lot more strictly, cutting down the portions and sticking at the fitness programme.
As I said, first session was Monday - was quite hard. I did cheat a little bit with the last few runs, probably stopping them about 3-5s earlier than I should have been, and my walking probably should have been brisker. I suppose that's just testament to how unfit I am starting this... but I'll do the week 1 runs for as long as it takes to be completely comfortable with it before moving on. So I might do 2 weeks of it rather than 1 week - we'll see how I feel after the third run.
Second run is going to be today. Legs are still kind of sore after Monday's run (mainly in my thighs and buttocks!), but I'm sure they'll be good to go after a bit of a warmup. I'm just running around a loch near my home - it's about 1.8 in length, and the first session seen me do 2 laps. So hopefully in 9 weeks time I'll be able to do 3 laps of it in a continuous run.
This thread and a quick Google search throws up 100's of success stories of C25K, so no matter how hard you find it to start with, stick with it cos' you will get there in the end.
Good luck.

Re: NHS Couch to 5k - Fitness Phobes Anonymous
I made a post a week or so ago about how I was really struggling. However, once I switched to doing the runs using music from my iPod that actually like listening to I found it a lot easier, and I'm finally about to complete this week. The idea is great, but I guess I just don't like the dull track they make you listen to, it's so draining.

Re: NHS Couch to 5k - Fitness Phobes AnonymousBut that voice, surely the voice makes it all worth while(Original post by A level Az)

Did my first run today! Really really red and unfit and wanted to give up half-way through but completed it! Please tell me that people found run 1 the hardest? Pretty please?
W1R1 complete. I felt that it was getting better by the end - is that weird? In any case, first time I have run in ages and definitely the first time I have chosen (rather than been obliged) to run. -
Re: NHS Couch to 5k - Fitness Phobes AnonymousWell done mate(Original post by Obsidian)

Wouldnt worry about it mate, they can't all be easy. well done(Original post by Dorito)
Struggled with Week 2, Run 2. My legs just wouldn't carry me and my last run was barely above walking pace.

Re: NHS Couch to 5k - Fitness Phobes AnonymousI've only done one run (things came up and I couldn't do run 2 today - will be doing it tomorrow morning), but I definitely found it quite difficult and most of the 'success' stories I've read feature people explaining how hard session 1 was and how it got easier from then onwards.(Original post by Obsidian)

Probably not too weird... you probably just get used to the pain and then don't notice it as much.W1R1 complete. I felt that it was getting better by the end - is that weird? In any case, first time I have run in ages and definitely the first time I have chosen (rather than been obliged) to run. -
Re: NHS Couch to 5k - Fitness Phobes Anonymouswhy cant you edit the normal version in audacity?(Original post by ThisIsTheLife)
It would be a great idea if they provided a blank version of the podcasts with just the voice - then you could edit it in audacity or something and put your own tunes on in the background. -
Re: NHS Couch to 5k - Fitness Phobes AnonymousYou could, but you couldn't cut out all of the music in the background when she speaks, which would be a little annoying.(Original post by OSharp)

Re: NHS Couch to 5k - Fitness Phobes Anonymous
Just got back from my first run. I think I almost died
It was pretty much what I was expecting, but I didn't really have very good expectations! And I have a feeling run 2 is going to be worse, but we'll see!
I've been meaning to start running for about a year and never went, but when I found this thread and the podcasts a few days ago it inspired me to go, so thank you whoever started this thread and the recent posters who brought it to my attention

Re: NHS Couch to 5k - Fitness Phobes AnonymousI'm almost dying after every run. Probably will for the whole 9 weeks.(Original post by rhian_lh)

Re: NHS Couch to 5k - Fitness Phobes Anonymous
Did about 23 minutes today and got the "cardiac arrest" feeling after about 15...that's the only thing stopping me progressing, not the breathing or any muscle pain
Still, sprinted at the end which was pretty fun. Bit annoyed that 9 weeks are probably up now and I should have got there by now...determined to make it to 30 minutes. Running in the midday sun probably isn't helping (and it's giving me some really dodgy tanlines)
Also, for anyone not following the C25K podcasts orrr if you're on continuous running, I found some good music for a run in the form of a dance podcast. Saves you buying/compiling your own songs and having to skip to ones you want, or waiting for the song to kick in. Found a really good one today http://soundcloud.com/maxvangelipodc...odcast-ft-arty, completely free as well.Last edited by Marsha2112; 05-07-2012 at 19:12.
