Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)Hahaha I've heard about the new examiner apparently this is what I've been told they're making the test harder so they test your actual knowlege and ability on a subject instead of just learning it from a book, which is quite harsh(Original post by sheepzibaa)

Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)
Can anyone suggest anymore work experience for me?
By the time I apply I will have
9 weeks SA vets
1 week 3 days LA vets
2 weeks dairy farm
6months cattery
4 weeks kennels
1 week a city farm during lambing
1 week or more petting zoo
2 years at 1 stables
Odd days at another stables
25hours dogs trust
Then if I don't have to go back to college I would also have 3 months in a zoo and next july have 2 weeks in a safari park and hopefully some proper lambing next year as well -

Some more dairy wouldn't hurt either... they seemed to love dairy at interview!!
Finally either some more LA vets or a specialist vets such as equine.
Then there's lab work or exotics... difficult to get to say the least, get the others first then worry about this

Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)I really want to do work with pigs as I loooooovvve them and would probably steal them muwhahaha but I couldnt' find any farm so I contacted the pig association thing and they never replied.(Original post by Angry cucumber)

I noticed their love of dairy at my interview it was literally the first question I got asked.
The LA vets for 3 days does mainly specialise in horses and do the stuff for the local safari park. But I might ring them again to see if they can give me a further 3 days. -
Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)I wish my college would hurry up with that! They've been saying that it'll be in a couple of weeks, forever!(Original post by wallaby)
Starting our UCAS applications at school this week! I am terrified to say the least!
Its all starting

Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)We started a couple of weeks ago, first draft of PS written. Needless to say it's rubbish and waaaaaay too long! But I'm getting there and gradually cutting the crap out. So...(Original post by wallaby)

Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)
Good luck to everybody starting their UCAS applications this week - I know how it feels! Eventually you will find a PS draft that you're happy with, even if at this stage it seems that it is far too long and doesn't sound quite right.
Have any of you 2013 applicants been to any of the open days yet? I know RVC was last month and I'm guessing the others must be coming up fairly shortly as most are towards the end of June. -
Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)Thats a good idea I might do that(Original post by sheepzibaa)
try writing a letter to the NFU asking for pig farmers.
Have you started doing your personal statement yet?? I need to start doing mine
-
Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)I've only got mine written because I was going to apply last year before re-starting with better subjects, so its from then. Have been working on it every time I do something new, feel pretty happy with it but I'm sure my teacher will rip it to shreds(Original post by beccac94)

I went to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Notts last year. My favorite being Nottingham! Even though I loved Glasgow I felt like they weren't very welcoming and were kind of putting people off applying (there were lots of tears in the crowd!) but I guess they are just being realistic about the competition

All of them were unique in their own way and all had excellent speakers. Edinburgh was definitely my favourite though from the start and I ended up getting an interview and an offer there. The Edinburgh open day brought home how competitive it was, with the lecturer opening with "there are 1000 applicants and 70 places". They were very friendly and welcoming though and I suppose like Glasgow, and all of the vet schools in fact, they want to make sure applicants know how competitive it is. -

What is their interview style like at Edinburgh, is it still a panel? Yeah I loved the interactiveness at Nottingham! At first I was like OMG THIS IS AWKWARD and my dad was laughing at me but I just let go and really enjoyed it
What was Bristol like? I want to go have a look before I decide for definite on Nottingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh but its a but far to get to on my own. I like the idea of being outside of the city in the final years in the country. Wish you could apply to 5! But I guess there would be far too many applicants then...

Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)Thanks! Yes at Edinburgh you are usually interviewed by 2 members of the admissions panel in a traditional style interview.(Original post by wallaby)

The Bristol open day was good; very well organised and a great veterinary admissions talk. However it was held at the vet school in the city of Bristol (Southwell Street) and so it was very quiet, probably not as busy as Langford. We had a tour and there was an opportunity to look round the various little rooms. There are opportunities to visit the Langford campus though - maybe check the website for any dates/times they give? It's definitely worth a look if you're still deciding whether or not to apply.
What's particularly nice about VetMed at Edinburgh is that the campus (Easter Bush) is about 8 miles south of Edinburgh in Roslin so is rural, but your accomodation is based in the city itself with a bus that goes down to the vet school. At my interview we were given a tour of the vet school and they even have TV screens telling you what time the next bus is due back to Edinburgh! That way you get the best of both worlds - you're not cut off completely from city life but at the same time you get to enjoy the greenery of the Easter Bush campus.
Back in the old days, when there only used to be six vet schools, you used to be able to put down all six and then it would be a lucky dip which one(s) you were offered. As you say if that were the case now there would be far too many applicants.
Only have to go back to college to do the last stupid general studies exam and hopefully won't have to go back next year.
