Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)Hi(Original post by RosieH7)
Hi
Only 8 days!? that's sort of horrible/lucky! least the agony isn't prolonged like us poor english souls!
How are you finding getting work exp in scotland?
Yes only a week to go now, when do you get your results?
Getting work experience isn't too bad but I live quite a distance away from any stables and farms which is quite difficult but I was told by my vet that the admissions take where you live into account.
I've only managed to get work in a cattery (for several weekends), lambing (for a few days) and im currently volunteering in a veterinary practice since around February. I'm also hoping to get some milking experience but I go back for my final year on the 15th so I need to get a move on :P
What experience have you got? -

By the end of the summer I should have 14 or 15 weeks, plus about the same again in kennels, I actually have lots more kennels but can't count most of it as I now live on site!(Original post by KatiexZoe)
How much work experience has everyone got/ planning to get?

Whoa! You are so prepared compared to me! What sort of placements have you had? It's lucky living on site to a kennels- in struggling to find kennels work as I live nowhere near any(Original post by Leigh303)

By the time I apply will have done: small & large animal vets, stables, lambing/sheep, dairy, cattery, alpacas, abattoir, falconry, rabbit/guinea pig sanctuary, and hopefully pigs. Think that's it!(Original post by KatiexZoe)

It's a blessing in disguise, dogs bark a lot (not good for revising!) and I now have to work without it counting as experience!
What part of the country are you from if you don't mind my asking?
I started at the end of year 11 (apart from kennels). Theres someone on here with ridiculous amounts, can't remember their username just their real one from the Facebook group. (which you should join if you haven't yet!)Last edited by Leigh303; 01-08-2012 at 11:51. -
Talk about it, ahaaa!(Original post by Sausage1)
I've just gone way over the limit on the first draft personal statement! :s
I'm well over twice the limit and the first draft of my personal statement isn't even at the stage of completion.
Has anyone got any tips for cutting down your personal statement they could share?
Thanks.

Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)Fortunately I have improved now, although I nearly royally messed up when I nearly connected a cow to the milking system which was being treated for mastitis (had red tape on its tail but missed it from the side)...as it was on penicillin if it had entered the main milk batch the farmer would have had to have thrown the entire lot out! Thank god there was someone else there. Won't make that mistake again lol.(Original post by schizopear)
i was rubbish at milking when i first started - i think the milking probably took longer with me helping
i was very happy though when they said that i'd officially become helpful
Other than that, the only other interesting thing I have seen is one of the calfs (from birth according to the farmer) had respiratory difficulties. The farm vet was called out and he diagnosed it as a tracheal narrowing (so upper respiratory), which he believed to be congenital - it looked only slightly distressed but the wheezing noise was quite worrying. He seemed to think I was half way through my vet med course (given I am 22), which was rather amusing as he asked me what my diagnosis was. -
Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)Tbph every place of w/e that has asked me for a CV, I've not done it. The reason being, is that you can get w/e by just ringing them up and asking to speak to practice manager/ farm manager/ head VN, then enquiring about the possibility of w/e. Works for me... I'm coming to the end of my 23rd week of w/e(Original post by jordanelouise)
I was wondering if someone can help me out!
I contacted a farm asking for work experience and they have contacted me asking for a CV. Would this just be a simple CV of education/qualifications/work/work experience?
Next week is 24 and I am trying to organise some more

I've been working on a dairy farm since I was 12 (I'm nearly 19.. ), for a couple of weeks every summer... I'm yet to told that I'm helpful(Original post by schizopear)

However, seen as I increase the farms man power by 150% and I'm asked to help with their TB tests and the like outside of my time there, I've got to be of some use, otherwise I wouldn't be asked
Spoiler:ShowI hope I'm helpful

Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)
I've just been reading about dairy cow welfare and read that up to 70% of a herd can be affected by mastitis in a year.
I spent every sunday from early May to late October at a dairy farm with around 150 cows. Why did I never come across a single case???

Did cows have tape on their tails (farmers do this when a cow needs some kind of attention.. often mastitis.) Also as you were doing one day a week, you may have missed when they were treating cows, (penicillin tube injected into teat) it's not done everyday
If there were no preventative measures though, I don't understand how you missed it
Especially as you were there in the summer, peak mastitis time!!

Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)Yeah there were teat sprayers, but there was on odd cow that would get through with being sprayed every so often.(Original post by Angry cucumber)

There were loads of different coloured tapes and he had me learn what each one meant, but the mastitis one never appeared during my time there. That would explain it, because Sunday was one of the less busy days.
When I got asked about my dairy placement at interview and I said I'd never seen mastitis, I knew the woman thought I was lying! Now I know why!

Did the farmer wet the teats before attaching a unit, and then spray them with iodine or something afterwards? This is usually what most farmers do to prevent mastitis, and then colour their tails.(Original post by matty9694)

Alternatively, he may have turned the cows with mastitis 'dry' - where they're not being milked every day, so you may not have seen them

Re: Veterinary Medicine 2013 hopefuls! (again, early...)Whoa, you've got almost everything there! - so well prepared lol- you're bound to get interviews with that sort of work to show for! And i live in Cambridgeshire, but i live fairly central so there's just cities and towns really - not good for farm work, which is why i had to stay with my family who live in nottinghamshire to do my farm work.(Original post by Leigh303)
