Physics Applicants 2012
University course discussion for Physics and Chemistry.

Re: Physics Applicants 2012Trevelyan, and I applied for straight physics, but I'll probably also switch to theoretical later on.(Original post by Kristina_Lucy)
I applied to castle, but got pooled and now I'm in hatfield - loved it when I went down there though!! What about you? Also, which physics course did you apply for? I chose straight physics initially, but I'm thinking of changing in the second year to theoretical so I don't have to do labs! -
Re: Physics Applicants 2012Fix'd(Original post by Rennit)
I got offers from Birmingham, Oxford andCambridgeBristol and then a rejection from St Andrews and Durham ^^
I prefer the physics course at Oxford so i'm going there and insuring Birmingham.
(and fyi, you can apply to Oxford and Cambridge aslong as you are a choral scholar, or just very very bright.)

Re: Physics Applicants 2012What I gathered from St Andrews was they require two things:(Original post by Chewythepikachu)
Anyone know if there's been a similar thread set up for 2013 entry? A link would be helpful
Also, manchester or birmingham for physics? I've also been thinking about durham and st andrews.
1. Outstanding academics
2. Extra-curriculars <- very relevant once your grades reach a certain level. (Subject related)
Even with strong GCSEs, AAAA at AS, a solid personal statement and several good bits of EC physics, the competition was tough, and did end with a rejection!

Re: Physics Applicants 2012
Firmed Durham, Bristol insurance
Trying to work out what I need for Durham. To get the AA part of the offer, I only really need high C's/low Bs in my last physics and chemistry modules, and that's giving myself a semi-conservative 20/60 in the empas for both (i.e coursework). I'm bad in the coursework practicals, but hopefully not that bad!
However, maths is a bit annoying, for reasons which are too long to go into here. In short, I'm eligible for an A* having done it a year early, but I'm only on track for a high B in Further Maths at the moment. Due to the way edexcel work with maths, and that you can swap out the applied modules like M1/S2 etc between the 2 A-levels, and edexcel might class AA as higher than A*B...but I'd need the latter for Durham's offer. Sort of frustrating
Edit: Should point out half the problem is that i got 32 (i.e a U) in D1 in January :P In theory, if I use M1 and D1 in my normal Maths, along with C1-4, I'd have exactly 480 UMS for an A, which is upped to an A* 'cause of my C3/C4 marks. So if i lost 1 mark I'd go down from an A* to a B, pretty odd.
(Have I explained this in this thread before? Sorry if I have, cba trawling back)Last edited by bistonut; 05-05-2012 at 12:21. -
Re: Physics Applicants 2012
Got my Bristol offer a few days ago just of the blue. I wasn't even invited to an open day like most of you here - apparently you get invites to an open day in which you get given a test but they're already going to give you an offer?
anyway, a few days have past since that offer on ucas track, and I've still heard nothing from bristol, no emails/letters/opendays.....
normal? because for all my other unis, they've all given me open day invites after or before the offer the made. -
Re: Physics Applicants 2012Another Edinburgh Physicist! Did you apply for direct or a speciality degree? I've firmed theoretical physics myself.(Original post by ader1)
ok, i replied today to my offers:
edinburgh: FIRM
UCL, King's, RHUL: declined

Re: Physics Applicants 2012hi oromis! no, i applied for physics only, i didn't want to make my field of studies too restricted, IMO there's plenty of time to specialize! but if i had to choose my specialization now it would be with no doubt theoretical!!(Original post by Oromis263)
Another Edinburgh Physicist! Did you apply for direct or a speciality degree? I've firmed theoretical physics myself.
PS my offer is still conditional, so i'm not an edinburgh physicist yet
i hope to see you there in september!!!!! -
Re: Physics Applicants 2012For 2 universities so close in ranking?! By the sounds of it, you always wanted to firm Durham, so you'll get a better mark there anyway. People don't seem to realise that the mark you get at the end of the uni is way more important, and you need to enjoy yourself to work hard!(Original post by vedderfan94)
Just firmed Durham, insured Lancaster
I'm sure some people will call me mad for rejecting Imperial though...

I firmed Durham over Imperial as well, insured Leeds.

Re: Physics Applicants 2012
So... Anybody have any idea why Lancaster (which I have firmed) have managed to drop from 6th to 20th?

I know league tables aren't to be taken as a truly fair reflection, but it's still somewhat worrying.

Re: Physics Applicants 2012MEEE! Come join the York Facebook group... I'm the only Physicist so far! http://www.facebook.com/groups/222249687862853/

Re: Physics Applicants 2012It will probably be that 66% graduate employment rate but I'd think its nothing to be worrying about. Lancaster still score well in everything else (not that entry standards matter at all...)(Original post by Eggy94)
