Re: TSR Motorbike Society- take 3!
    (Original post by Renesmee)
    Hi guys!
I just got my first scooter yesterday, a 125cc Sym Fiddle Ii. I'm just a bit paranoid about people stealing it, I've heard so many stories on the internet about people who have had their bikes nicked even though they have locks, tags and theft insurance D:
Is there any point getting a disk lock, because theives can just push it into a van. I can't afford fire and theft insurance, so I've only got third party, so it's not like getting a disk lock will reduce my premium.
Where can I park it and lock it to on the street when I've rode it to work (lamppost, railings?) Are these legal?
Finally, is a U lock good enough security for a bike, and where do you lock it to on the scooter, if not the wheel? (People can unscrew the wheel and put the bike in a van)
Sorry for the long post, but I am so scared of it getting nicked, after I paid £625, not including helmet, jacket, boots, lock and CBT.
I've had two bikes stolen (voice of experience here). Not sure scooters are as desirable, but definitely easier to steal. Make sure you always use an approved security chain and make sure it is attached to the frame of your scooter and something immovable (lamp post is usually a good idea). In addition - get an alarm (nothing that expensive is necessary) but more importantly, make sure it has a light that shows the scooter has an alarm. It acts more as a deterrent than actually being useful for its own purpose but should help steer potential thieves away. Some people have also said to use two different types of chains/cable locks as it means the thieves would need two different tools to cut through both, however I have never taken it quite that far!

At the end of the day though, if they want it bad enough it will get stolen .

Trains are expensive. How do you get from uni to home and back without spending lots of money?

I know that it'll cost me a minimum of £100 to get home and back so I only go home x3/year. I normally ask for some money to cover the petrol/flight/train etc. from my dad.

Ah, that makes sense. I'm looking at £80-£200 to get home and back, unless I hop on the bike and ride home, which'd only cost around £30 but may cost me my sanity.

UP TO MUCH!? How's the bike?

Geared Doing it this Saturday, £95 for a 9-4 course. Looking forward to it - and a guy on my street is selling his 125 so I might ask how much he wants for it - I just want a cheap runaround to get some experience so i can do my A2 before the change the rules next year and I need to do silly amounts of tests!

You're only in Liverpool, think about it from my perspective! I normally do it in 2 days to not kill myself. I was going to fly home but I'm then going to dart all over the country so it'd be not so fun by train/bus. Just put on some music and stop as often as you need to. Tabitha is going for a service tmrw. Just finished exams so sorting out everything out that I've neglected. Going home sometime next week.

Well, I decided to go out for a ride just to make Gaz jealous (:hahaha:). Ugs was grumpy so I had to bump start him, but I managed it first time :proud: When we started off it was really sunny, but it's been awkward weather here today and it soon started chucking it down, with bits of thunder and lightning too. But it was like really heavy but really short, so it soon stopped again.

And then we were going home and really enjoying it when someone decided to pull out in front of us. So I tried to stop, skidded a bit and I dunno what happened really but luckily not much really, except it scared me. And I don't think Ugs liked it either because he refused to go into first gear (he does that sometimes to tell me he's annoyed, I think).

    Sweet. Best of luck.

I've got a YBR, does the job nicely. Was able to do my CBT on one which worked out very well.

Anything like a YBR, CG, GN etc (125cc's) are cheap to run, easy enough to fix and look after and insure

That's a pretty little bike. I'm sure you'll be fine on your CBT. It's not too hard.
