That's good, I guess I might aswell send mine aswell. I'm applying in a busy shopping centre in Manchester, so i guess it will be quite competitive. You? I've applied for like 3 vacanices in Next already, and i don't seem to be getting any replies. This job search is harder than i thought. lol
Various places around Derby, 4 jobs in total so hopefully I'll get an interview for at least one, but there's so much competition .

I applied to M&S a week ago and passed the online application and the interview, but just didn't get picked out of the masses who did the same, lol.

Can somebody please check my answers to these questions. It's for the Next application, and i want to make sure i get all of them right.
Thanks. My answers are in bold.

    1. Which three High Street Retailers do you consider to be Next's biggest clothing competitors?

    Debenhams
    Dorothy Perkins
    Dunnes
    Marks & Spencer
    Matalan
    New Look
    Penny's
    Primark
    River Island
    Tesco
    TK Maxx
    Top Shop

    2. How would you best describe the Next brand? Please select three answers.

    Catwalk fashions
    Cheap clothes
    Designer labels
    Good quality
    Haute couture
    High fashion
    Modern classic styles
    On trend
    Sportswear
    Value for money

    3. What are the best resources to keep yourself up-to-date with current fashion trends? Select your top three resources.

    Internet
    Listening to the radio
    Magazines
    Shopping on the High Street
    Store catalogues and directories
    Television fashion programmes
    Through friends and family

    4. You are with a customer in the fitting room and they have asked you to bring in an alternative size. They explain the outfit is for a wedding, but you personally feel the garment is not very flattering on the customer. What would you do?

Ask a more experienced colleague to address the situation for you to observe, so you are able to deal with a similar situation should it arise in the future.
Bring the customer the correct size and tell them it would be perfect for the wedding.
Bring the customer the correct size, as well as some alternative items, and then offer to give them advice once they have tried the items on.
Tell the customer politely the outfit doesn’t suit them.

    5. The shoe lounge is a key selling area for the Company. What would be your top three priorities whilst working in the shoe lounge?
    Advise on style and fit.
Keeping the shoe stands clean and tidy at all times, above all tasks.
Only serve one customer at a time to maximise sales.
    Presentation of the shoes.
Providing excellent customer service to ensure the customer's shoe shopping experience is a delight.
Replenishment of the sold stock to prevent gaps on the stands.
Selling the most expensive pair of shoes.

    6. A new manager takes over your team and suggests some changes. The manager has asked everyone for their feedback and you don’t think some of these ideas will work very well, how would you respond?

Gather all the members of your team and confront the manager as a group with your objections.
Inform the manager you disagree with the ideas and explain your reasons why.
    Say nothing.
You agree to try the new ideas and discuss your concerns after the changes have been trialled.

    7. You are serving at the till point and a customer's credit card has been declined, the customer becomes embarrassed and irate, would you?
Ask the customer if they can pay with an alternative method.
    Call a manager for assistance.
Offer to hold the garments whilst the customer contacts their credit card company.
Tell the customer they must have exceeded their card spending limit.

    8. What is the main purpose for having a member of staff at the front entrance at all times?
To be a welcoming face at the front door for customers to see.To entice customers to come into the store.
    To prevent theft.
To tidy the stock at the entrance of the store as this is the first thing customers see.

    9. A watch is returned by a customer because it is faulty. Later you observe a member of staff trying on the same faulty returned watch. When you approach them they say they are taking it home as it will only be destroyed and they suggest you take a returned faulty item also, what would you do?
Call the confidential Company security hotline.
    Inform a manager immediately.
Point out this would be theft and advise them to put the watch back.
Say you do not wish to get involved and walk away from the situation.
Take the faulty item as it will only be getting destroyed.

    10. I work best in the following environment
A busy one, this is when I am most productive.
One where I am given my task and will complete to Company standards without constant supervision.
One where I can work through my activities at my own speed.
One where I have the opportunity to vary the work I do as I get bored easily.

I said Debenhams, M&S and Dunnes (mine is an ROI application). I don't know about TKMaxx? I'd be more inclined to go with Matalan or New Look than them.

I put modern classic styles instead of value for money. Both I think are important to them so don't see a problem with that.

Other answers are fine, what I had. Number 6 is wrong. They would see it as not your place to point out faults to a manager before it has been trialled. Agreeing to trial first is the right answer.

Number 9, I'm nearly certain that's wrong. Telling a manager would cause ructions and they wouldn't have authority to deal with it out straight. You could make enemies that way! I said discourage them and point out it's theft, but I think calling the anonymous number is an equally valid answer.

I said a busy one because that's what I'm used to, your answer is fine though.

Good luck! I only applied yesterday, I'll see how it goes.

I just called them and the lady who answered the phone told me that the interviewer was on holiday and wont be back til tomorrow.

During the interview the interviewer said I would hear from them early this week.
If she knew shes going on holiday and wont be back til tomorrow, why would she say she would call early this week? I dont get it..
Haha yeah that sounds a bit wierd...
Ah well at least you know

Nope those answers are mostly different to what I put, and I completed the questionnaire.

It's actually really easy. Think, the customer is always right, and you want to show you can sell products well. I won't tell you all the answers but obviously, "You agree to try the new ideas and discuss your concerns after the changes have been trialled" and "to prevent theft" should be chosen instead of what you chose. Definitely you "Point out this would be theft and advise them to put the watch back" not call the manager...

    good luck with it though

Is your reasoning behind 'to prevent theft' that it might dissuade potential shoplifters? Sales assistants are urged to report suspicions/sightings but NEVER to apprehend or actually do anything and they do employ security for that anyway. Sure it might dissuade a few but not people who are down and out and live by stealing, who are the main offenders and by far the worst. It's obviously a valid answer but I would think being a welcoming face is just as important to the company as they all want that too.

Most shoplifters want an easy steal, staff at the door would put many of them off stealing actually. Besides, I googled that particular question and that was the answer that came up, so I clicked it.

Welcoming face is what the answer should be, Quoting from an old TSR post about Next
"For me, to welcome the customers and this is what I got told in my interview. But part of the job is to also keep things tidy, though the main job of the person at the front of the store is to meet and greet. "

Yeah welcoming customers is what I would put, I had my first shift there today and they always make sure there is someone smiling away at the door to greet people. I think the rest of them are pretty much the same as what I pt apart from the first question but I doubt it matters very much what shops you compare it to. Good luck

I got a callback so my answers seem to be fine. I missed the call though and a week or two-week long summer sale job really isn't suitable, would not want to reject a permanent job for it. Think I'll sit on the fence and apply for permanent or longer temp jobs there in future.

Yeah, I think permanent might be better. Next always seem to have vacancies, so you'll probably find one.
Anyway, for the theft question, should i do the helpline one, or advise them to put it back. & the last one, should i change my answer to the busy one? Thanks.

Yeah I need to get to M&S, they don't do online applications for ROI- relying on Boots, Primark and Next online right now- as well as New Look and Debenhams. Advising to put back is right, I may be wrong but helpline is for more of a consistent pattern you have spotted, or blatant stealing. It is not a bad answer though, and definitely better than telling a manager. I think busy is right- it WILL be a busy nightmare in there for the sales, they want to know you won't get overwhelmed or slack off. Again, your answer isn't wrong, but I think it gives off a vibe that you don't want management constantly overseeing you, which may put them off.
