Rach- can you take a mixture of human and physical modules after the first year- I asked a student on the open day and they said with 'negotiation'- so I just guessed that most people stick to either physical or human geo.

I think you have to stick mainly to either physical or human....which causes me problems as I want to do both! :frown:
However, this is the same at most universities - you do both physical and human in the first year and specialise in one side for the second and third years. I guess its possible to maybe do a couple of modules from one side if the majority of your modules are from the other side  ....

Wrong!! :p:

Since I'm the 2nd year around here, I'll answer the question properly hehe

Firstly, I assume you (mel) know that first year is the same whether you do BA or BSc? If not, then it is, there's no difference - except that you have 2 optional modules so you can play around a bit with those. Ask and I'll explain more if you like.

But to answer your question...yes you can do both in a way! 2nd year is structured like this:

1. Geography: A changing discipline: Compulsory module for everyone - Basically about how Geography has changed over time and how it is viewed today. Bit boring. First term is all human, second term is all physical, but you have to attend both bits!

2. Social/Scientific Research for Geography Social for BA students, Scientific for BSc students - This is the only bit where you have to decide what you'd like to concentrate on. This module teaches you lots of different techniques in either social or scientific research, then you do a fieldwork practical (where you spend a week somewhere - for human it's Liverpool or Glasgow, for physical I *think* it's the Lake District or Scotland, but don't quote me on that!). This kind of leads to your dissertation so if you want to do a dissertation on the impact of glaciation on 17th century landscapes then I would advise to not do Social Research!

3. The fun bit! You have a long list of modules and you get to choose any 3. Yes....any three!!!. I'll try to find the list *looks*....ah here it is:
GEOG2541 Development, Society and the Environment (H)
GEOG2551 Environmental Processes and Management (The one module that tries to link Human and Physical)
GEOG2521 Fluvial Systems (P)
GEOG2531 Glaciation (P)
GEOG2591 GIS & Remote Sensing (P mostly, but can be used for H)
GEOG2571 Global Climate Change (P)
GEOG2581 Political Geog (H)
GEOG2601 Quaternary Studies (P)
GEOG2561 Social & Cultural Geography (H)
GEOG2511 Urban Geography (H)

Right, as I say you can choose any three. I've put (H) or (P) after them to show if they're Human or Physical. Most are obvious, but a couple aren't!

And I'd also like to say that don't think it's weird to want to take a mixture. What you have to remember is that at degree level you no longer take "Geography". There is no one "Geography" course, as there is so much geographers DO! So it's natural that you'll find certain areas interesting, even if they do mix between human and physical!

By third year, however, you're meant to have figured out whether you're a humaner or physicaler, or one of those people inbetween who does something like flood management in urban areas (for example)...or disaster management, etc etc. But third year modules are SO SPECIFIC that you should be fine by then

Hope this helps! As I say, any questions, let me know. My daughter (Rach) is a bit too young to help at the moment  hehe

Well, I try my best :frown:
I got the impression from everyone, including my tutors, that you had to do one or the other though.....

No, they lie, because to put it simply, if you do JUST human or JUST physical, you're going to get a better grade of degree. Well, more likely to anyway.

Why?

Because a lot of things overlap. Philosophers mentioned in Social and Cultural Geography are relevant to Political Geography. Policies in Political Geography are relevant to Development, Society, and the Environment. And data from Development, Society and the Environment could be applied to Social and Cultural Geography.

It's true, when you get to 2nd year, you can sometimes wonder which lecture you're in as some things overlap so much. This makes it better as when it comes to exam/essay time you can use information you've got from other modules.

However, I doubt very much that Glaciation will help much towards Urban Geography! Which means you have to revise/read more per module as things are so different. Remember also that if I read a book for Social and Cultural Geography it can be very relevant to Political Geography, and so on, therefore I don't have to read as much as if I was taking a large variety of modules.

So, tutors want you to take just one area, as you then get a better degree and the department and university look better

But there's nothing stopping you, apart from maybe timetable clashes, which don't really happen anyway!

PS. I know you try your best :hugs:

Yeah, you can. It's just that when you see Physical bits in Human geography it's the "Human Geography of Physical Geography", and vice-versa (the "Physical Geography of Human Geography").

It can never be both. It's either the one of the other, or the other of the one

i too am a chadsian wannabe...  !!! (damn Track wont put me out of my misery!) oooh that kinda rhymes!! go me!

i agree with Rach... although it goes without saying that physical geography is fantabulous and far better than human in every way, they do merge. i for one am infamous in the geography dept for turning human geo essays into physical ones, but they still have to give me the grades (grudgingly!! ) because it is still counted as human.

(please don't hit me!! :afraid: )

Wait until degree level...things become a lot more abstract, and much of the course covers "What is geography?" "What should we study?" "Why do we study that?" rather than actually studying anything. It seems really pointless. So far I haven't learned anything to say that it's not pointless :frown:

And I wouldn't hit you! You're a fellow geographer (even if you are an evil physicaler :p: hehe)

Easy to nab sons/daughters at Cuths - well it is...no chance of getting one from a proper college (hehe) as they will already have parents
