Re: Hong Kong University(Original post by yahyahyahs)
Every course at HKU teaches in English. They make a big deal of the English part. They claim to teach every course in English but it is not true. A family friend is a current lecturer teaching a business-related subject. She said the lectures are actually conducted in Cantonese, the notes are in English. If they know a foreign student is going to join the course, some lecturers are not comfortable teaching in English and will pass the teaching to another lecturer. Or simply tell the student that the course is full if they want to register for that course.(Original post by TheMJCG)
I called then to apply for the medicine MBBS course and they said that a good knowledge of Cantonese is required.
In one class, there is a foreign student there. He found it difficult to do group project. He had to do it on his own.

Re: Hong Kong UniversityI did interview with them. I think they have several batches of interviews this year. If you don't get it now don't worry! It will come(Original post by Ber)

Re: Hong Kong University
Does CUHK tell you when they reject you? I haven't heard from the university since that disastrous interview in February (I think they suspected I lied in my personal statement, which I don't blame them because a lot of it could be seen as an over exaggeration of my actual skills).
-
Re: Hong Kong Universityif they reject u, the online portal thing will show something like "unsuccessful" or so. but since it has already been two months, i suggest u to ring them up or send them an email(Original post by Jessicutie)

Re: Hong Kong UniversityI actually disagree - I think they accept candidates on a rolling basis, they would reject the bottom 20%, 40% or 60% along the way, and leaving the top 40% or 20% for reassessment later.(Original post by dragon_knight)

Also, HKU has not finished interviewing yet. I assume some people who got offers from CUHK would turn down the offer if they received acceptance from HKU. So the game is not over yet! Be hopeful and good luck!

Re: Hong Kong University
Hello All,
Considering most on this thread are from/live in HK - I thought I would ask here.
I am going to HK for 3 months next year and was wondering if 36, 000 HKD would be suffiecent for accomadation for the 3 months? I want to be around central/happey valley area.
I will also have around 12, 500 HKD per month to spend on food and clothes etc. again is this enough?
Many Thanks -
Re: Hong Kong University12,000 per month for accommodation alone should be more than enough if you're renting an apartment... however i doubt if anyone would rent it to you for 3 months only(Original post by Hackett)

as for hotels, it's not quite enough really
12,500 for food and clothes, my, that'd be heaven for me LOL!

Re: Hong Kong University
I'm slowly contemplating applying for a PhD at HKU later this year. I'm doing a masters in International Security at the moment, so I would probably apply to the Department of Politics and Public Administration.
Any tips or general info on what my chances are? I assume there's a lot of people applying.Last edited by Mihajlo; 10-04-2012 at 23:47. -
Re: Hong Kong Universitycongratulations! So i guess you are going for HKU, right?(Original post by dragon_knight)
haha no problem
the CUHK inteview was rather relaxing but the HKU interview was reallyreally demanding. basically whatever i answered, the interviewers said that i am wrong (even in personal opinion questions like universal suffrage). i thought i was doomed after the interview and went onto the CUHK website to look for dorms and their curriculum.
eventually i got an offer though
but yeah u never know what HKU professors think about your performance in interview. perhaps they like ppl who does not tremble in adverse conditions?
anyway hope u get offers very soon! -
Re: Hong Kong Universityyeahyeah certainly for HKU(Original post by clcokwin)
congratulations! So i guess you are going for HKU, right?

Re: Hong Kong University
Hello, excuse me. My name is Charlotte.
I am going to ask for help here.
I am a first year university student studying at the University of British Columbia (Canada Vancouver campus).
Before going to study at UBC, I was taking GCE A-level. In my AS level study, I got the results are: A-level Mathematics A, AS-level Chemistry A and AS-level Physics B.
Then, in my A2-level study, my results are:A-level Further Mathematics B, A-level Chemistry A and A-level Physics B.
When I was in my AS-level, I applied the CUHK integrated BBA program(I reaaaally regret to applied BBA). CUHK gave me the conditional offer without interview in the late June for the condition 3 A in A-level in one sitting.( it is already done the A2 exam)
Then you know I just got ABB in my A2-level, I didn't fulfill the condition of BBA. So I cannot get into CUHK. I am reaaaally upset at that time.
I got the offer from the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. But I gave up the offer of UT because UT didn't gave me scholarship. That is why I am in UBC now because UBC gave me CAD$5,000 scholarship even though I didn't applied for scholarship.
However, I still reaaaally want to study in CUHK that I applied it again in the Oct. 2011 for the 2012 entries by using the A-level results ABB.
My first choice is Geography and Resource Management, second choice is Sociology, my third choice is Chemistry.
However, I haven't got any information until now. I haven't got any interview from each of them and all of them status are still Under consideration.
I reaaaally worry about that. I am afraid I cannot get into CUHK. I am not a smart person. Just hardworking.
Would you help me? I don't know what I can do next. Just wait?
I will be very greatful for your help!
Thank you very much much much!! -
Re: Hong Kong University
Hi everyone just an update. I was accepted into HKU for the LLB this spring. It was a very long acceptance process but I am so happy. I am from the Southern Hemisphere so I already had my completed IB diploma. I got a 38/42 the minimum requirement and did not need to complete an interview. I also had the process increase by sending in acceptance letters from the USA indicating that I needed to reply by May 1st. This really works. So to those waiting good luck.
P.S. Check out my blog: www.wardrobeuprising.blogspot.com.au -
Re: Hong Kong UniversityIf you're really worried, why don't you phone CUHK and ask them about the progress of your application?(Original post by CharlotteChan)
...
My friend only just got an invite for interview from CUHK so you are not the only person who has had to wait a while. -
Re: Hong Kong UniversityYou DO need to be able to speak fluent Cantonese to apply.(Original post by Music_Xu)
Hey guys, I was just wondering... Do I have to be able to speak Cantonese and Mandarin if I want to apply for a medical or dentistry course at HKU?
but yeah u never know what HKU professors think about your performance in interview. perhaps they like ppl who does not tremble in adverse conditions?
