The title of professor is actually a job title rather than an academic qualification. To have a chance of being of becoming a professor, you will need to have done your PhD and post-doc qualifications, have an outstanding record of research, and be an experienced lecturer. Oh and you will probably need a lot of good contacts and a hell of a lot of luck (I would assume there is fierce competition for such posts). Hence most professors tend to be fairly old because of the experience required to get the job.
Not contacts really. My dad has no post-grad or post-doc qualifications, and a 2:2, and now has a professorship, on the strength of his research record.

I meant contacts in the sense of being well known within your area and having a good reputation.
