Personal Statement Question Thread
You've got questions about applying for uni, we've got the answers. Step inside...

Re: Personal Statement Question ThreadYes, if you post your Personal statement in the help forum section, and ask them what you can cut down on, they will tell you. Because sometime we ramble alot and we mention parts that are unnecessary.(Original post by another_member)
^ Agreed. Although its quite difficult when you have to keep the line limit below 47?
I've done pretty well keeping it within the 47 lines, it's really my language. -
Re: Personal Statement Question ThreadIt's always worth submitting a redraft as people may have the time to review your statement again, but, while I can not guarantee this, it is still worth posting it. I understand your point, but a significant percentage of applicants we help also have problems with their usage of the English language and so it isn't fair to prioritise anyone by guaranteeing them a redraft. However, post it in the same thread as your other drafts and someone (and I can not guarantee this) may have a look over it.(Original post by Hogwartz)
Of course i understand this hugely, but my main problems are with the teachers at my school, who only help their 'favorite' students, and neglect students like me, who really need help because of my bad grammar, and using a good standard of english which does not come naturally to me.
The first time i posted my PS on tsr, i did get great help, and specific direction, which is what i needed. But because my english language is very horrific, i need it re checked all the time, as i have no one else to show this to.

OP
I've been advised to start working on my PS NOW.
I'm not sure where to begin!
ANy help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Edit: I'm in Year 12.
It depends what subject you're applying for, but I would still say hold off for a couple of months because things may change between now and when you apply. PS Help will be able to offer some assistance in reviewing your statement, but since you're applying for the next UCAS cycle, we won't really be reviewing statements for applicants for 2013 until July 2012. -

Umm Nat Sci (Physical) or straight Physics really. But thanks! -
Re: Personal Statement Question ThreadYour personal statement should either be 47 lines or 4000 characters (whichever comes first). For example, if you hit 4000 characters first, then it won't matter if your statement is 40 lines or 47 lines (as long as it's also below 47 lines). However, if you get to 47 lines first, then your statement may only be 3200 characters long. Put simply, 47 lines or 4000 characters - whichever comes first.(Original post by Hogwartz)
What is the number of lines the Personal Statement, is supposed to be between.
Is it 40-47? -

Re: Personal Statement Question ThreadMy reviewing specialism isn't psychology so I won't be able to. Sometimes it helps to be concise, but I would just post a new draft in the original thread and wait to see if someone helps you. As I've said, we can't guarantee reviewing redrafts, but I believe that you have been given some advice about redrafts if you read the replies to your statement.(Original post by Hogwartz)

Hang on a second, how do you know what i am applying for? -
Re: Personal Statement Question ThreadI'm a PS Helper so I can view the thread that you've made. Don't worry. All PS Helpers are at university or are graduates so it is fine for all helpers to see all the statements.(Original post by Hogwartz)

I'm a PS Helper so I can view the thread that you've made. Don't worry. All PS Helpers are at university or are graduates so it is fine for all helpers to see all the statements.
I didn't know this. So everyone can see what i wrote?
Thats not private at all! -
Re: Personal Statement Question ThreadYes it is. Only PS helpers can see it and all have proven they are at uni or are graduates so have no reason to plagiarise.(Original post by Hogwartz)

Re: Personal Statement Question ThreadNo, you're slightly mistaken. The PS Help forum is a private forum. Only PS Helpers can see what you've written. No-one else can see what you've written and it doesn't get picked up by google searching etc because it is a private forum. You (and everyone else without the PS Helper user title) can only see the threads that they make so you only see your threads while another person only sees their threads. People who have the PS Help user title (such as myself) can see every thread. PS Helpers are all fully checked to ensure that they are either graduates or are currently at university. Those who then apply for another course have to leave the usergroup so it is only ever people who aren't applying for courses that we review that can see your statement. Statements can not be seen by those who don't have the PS Helper usertitle so don't worry about this.(Original post by Hogwartz)

Someone mentioned earlier, that you don't HAVE to mention the subjects you study,so when talking about skillsyou learnt through this, can i say this indirectly throughout my Personal Statement? -

Re: Personal Statement Question ThreadTalking about generic skills like time management and essay writing skills rarely sounds good, so it's not necessary(Original post by Hogwartz)

Re: Personal Statement Question ThreadHow about 'analysis, leadership, interpersonal skills'?(Original post by *Interrobang*)
Talking about generic skills like time management and essay writing skills rarely sounds good, so it's not necessary
These are the only ones i have mentioned throughout my PS.
