Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?
Hi, I got rejected from OXford this year, and I really like Oxford

I'm hoping to reapply for Oxford, but I want to reapply for Oxford while
attending the first year at another university. Is it possible to do that?
Also, my IB grade is 40 (including bonus points), all 6s and 7s..
Is the grade too low for Oxford? Since I was predicted 43 and still got rejected..
Help me!

Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?
What did you apply for?
Bear in mind you have to prove you have improved (and Oxford say they expect reapplicants to demonstrate a higher degree of maturity/depth of knowledge due to the extra year of experience). I don't think 40 on the IB would be a problem - it was probably interview that let you down.
So the question is whether you think it's worth the fee rise and whether you feel you could address the issues of your last application (Did they send feedback?)
Also, if you start at another Uni, bear in mind you might meet people you really like and find you're having an awesome time there. What uni would you be attending?Last edited by qwertyuiop1993; 06-07-2011 at 20:19. -
Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?You certainly can - but remember, as I said to OP, you will have to demonstrate a higher level of proficiency at interview because of the extra year.(Original post by nishadpotdar)
I scored 42/45 this year on my IB Diploma with 777 on my HLs (Math, Physics and Eco). I was pooled and rejected at Cam last year... I have recently discovered a strange passion for business (management) and feel that the E&M course at Oxford is what I badly need. Will be attending UCL this year. Am an Indian citizen. GCSEs: Indian equivalent of 10A*s. Can I apply to Oxford?
If you feel that Business is what you really want to do then go for it. What will you be studying at UCL? -
Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni? Then I think you should go for it.(Original post by nishadpotdar)
BSc Economics at UCL (L100). I can do lots of reading/get spring internships etc to be a better applicant. Actually, I live in rural India. I wrote my PS in 4 hours and no one really reviewed it. I didn't have any mock interview (neither could I watch the videos because my internet connection back then was like 50 kbps). And I screwed up on my TSA too. My Cambridge feedback says I was extremely close to an offer on both occasions (before and after being pooled).
But remember - take into account the higher fees and the possibility that you may really love UCL. Also, if people at UCL find out you're re-applying they might not take it too well - and if you don't get in then it might be a bit awkward. -
Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni? It's possible and some people do try it (and if anecdotal evidence is to be relied on, a few of them are successful), but it's something they try to discourage, I believe.(Original post by nishadpotdar)
Right, can anyone else confirm this? Can a student studying at another British university apply to Oxford for admission to the first year? Has anyone tried this before? -
Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?No, Oxford will not allow transfer students. I believe you will have to apply like any other candidate. (Though they will probably be aware that you are attending another university, I don't think they'll take those grades into account)(Original post by desy.kris)
you can, but I guess you'll be applying as a Transfer Student and you won't apply using your IB grades but your grades in the uni that you're already going to. -

oh and you'll have to repeat your first year.
If you were applying as a transfer student then you wouldn't be going into the first year. But, as you've rightly said, Oxford don't accept people into second year. So you're not applying as a transfer student, you're applying through UCAS with your A-level grades. (Bearing in mind the October 15th deadline, it's not like you'd have any marked work back from undergrad anyway!) -
Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?I would be more cautious than are some of the replies on this thread; hobnob's post is the correct one IMHO. It is certainly possible, but the admissions tutors will be looking hard at why you have decided to change and what this tells them about your personality and motivation. You will need a convincing rationale in order to counter what may well be negative assumptions concerning the reasons behind your application. Also, Oxford will be mindful of the fact that it would be 'stealing' a student (and his/her future fees) from, in your case, LSE. It would not be too popular with other unis if it made too much of a habit of this.(Original post by nishadpotdar)
Oxford=no transfer. I am fine with repeating year 1.
So it can be done, eh? *goes off to write his E&M PS*
Oh and yeah, where can I find E&M PS samples? The ones on TSR didn't get a "yes" from Oxford.Last edited by shoshin; 09-07-2011 at 10:01. -
Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?Apologies(Original post by nishadpotdar)
Not LSE, it'll be UCL
I had London, three letter acronym, and economics all jumbled together in my mind and LSE popped out.

Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?The frank evidence from TSR appears to be: whichever applicants revealed and/or discussed the fact of their attendence at university were rejected. The only acceptances were for those who witheld the truth. Whether such actions would weigh down on your conscience are of course for you to decide.(Original post by nishadpotdar)
LOL I'm not doing that. I have my GCSE (equivalent) and IB grades, and UCL starts Sept 26th. I intend to submit my UCAS app by the 20th of Sept. So it'll be my school teacher who'll write my reference! -
Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?TBH I'm not at all sure that the chances of a successful application would be high enough to justify the inevitable distraction from your studies at UCL. Good luck though whatever you decide(Original post by nishadpotdar)
Haha ok. But what do you make of my argument? Reasonable?

Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?Do let us know what exeter college say, would be helpful for other people considering re-applying(Original post by nishadpotdar)
Well, I've already emailed Exeter College to ask if I can apply as a UCL student. If they say no, that'll be the end of the story. No hiding business here.
And there'll be nothing to get distracted about. I'll do just as well at UCL- I know that.
So I'm giving it a try. Thank you very much for all the help, friends! I hope the OP is satisfied with the answer. It is a "yes", but you should confirm this with your college. And 40 should be fine, especially if it's 776 or 777 at HLs. I guess a 766 will raise eyebrows.
Cheers!

Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?Out of interest, what did cambridge say was the reason for the rejection? Also, what college was it?(Original post by nishadpotdar)

Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?Sorry to be annoying, but did you find out your TSA score?(Original post by nishadpotdar)
It was an open app--->Girton. They said everything was fine, but I didn't quite make it "on the day". All my stats, essay and reference were comparable to those of successful candidates, but my TSA score was low :/ I was close to an offer on both occasions (before and after getting pooled).
Yup, I'll let you guys know what Exeter says. -
Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?
So hopefully this will answer most of your questions:
I called Oxford Undergraduate Admissions. They basically said they don't like to "upset their colleagues at other universities, especially at highly ranked unis like LSE/UCL." But anyone certainly can apply. Exeter College said something similar... No transfers, but anyone is welcome to apply for entry to the first year.
Hope this answers your questions! Cheers!Last edited by nishadpotdar; 18-04-2013 at 16:15. -
Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?So are you going to let UCL know that you're applying to Oxford? And are you getting your school to write the reference? I ask because I'm in a similar position...(Original post by nishadpotdar)
If you've come to see the answer to this thread, you've gotta read this:
1) I called Oxford undergraduate admissions (just to know what the university has to say): Wow! 42 with 777 on HLs? Brilliant!
Ok, thank you madam. I'll be going to UCL this fall to study economics and want to apply to Oxford for E&M.... *WOW*, UCL is a fantastic place. On a personal note, I'd say *stay there*. We don't like to upset our colleagues at other unis, especially if they're as highly ranked as UCL. But you certainly can apply. *We will treat you like any other first year applicant*. Done
2) I called up Exeter college: Same questions... You've emailed us about this also, haven't you (Yup I had). I'm sorry I didn't get the time to respond. In a nutshell, what she said is: "No transfers, but you are *most welcome* to apply for entry to the first year*.
Hope this answers your questions! Cheers!
EDIT: I've had a lot of people asking me about reapplication - for the record, I didn't end up reapplying in the end, so I'm afraid I won't be much help with your questions! The best thing to do would be to email the admissions office directly.Last edited by bluesky42; 18-04-2012 at 17:12. -
Re: Is it possible to reapply for Oxford while attending another uni?same question/ same situation(Original post by bluesky42)
So are you going to let UCL know that you're applying to Oxford? And are you getting your school to write the reference? I ask because I'm in a similar position...

I had London, three letter acronym, and economics all jumbled together in my mind and LSE popped out.
