Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

There are rumours floating about of the possibility of a third film making the Hobbit a trilogy since they apparently have enough material from the book, as well as the extensive appendixes to “The Lord of the Rings" to draw upon. I'd rather they just put all that on the extended editions. More Hobbit can only be good but it seems like they will be spreading the story and material incredibly thin. It stops being the Hobbit and turns more into 'Stories from Middle-Earth'.

Every time someone posts on this thread, I end up watching the trailer again. Bugger waiting a year
You scared me. My initial reaction was "I swear I only had a few months, are you telling me that production has pushed it back a year??!?"

Then I saw that your post was from a year ago.

I wonder if the Tolkien purists are going to be happy with the Hobbit as a trilogy. I mean it's going to be the whole of the book's content plus a tonne of stuff which relates to it and happens during the same time-frame so yeah. My only worry is that there may or may not be an extended version released with each film at 4 hours because having three Hobbit films is kind of the extended version.

That's crazy, I hope it doesn't just turn into how much money can we drag out from it and kill the story.

Meh. Seems like they're milking it for cash imo. "Why make two 3 hour long films when you can make three 2 hour long films and make hundreds of millions more in revenue?!"

I would much much rather they put The Hobbit in 2 parts, and had a 1 part movie based on the Fall of Numenor, as was suggested in this long article. Though since its mostly based on The Simarillion, it might not be possible until after Christopher Tolkien passes away.

Lord of the Rings was going to be two films. Are you saying that that was a cash cow, and they should have kept it at two films?
Also, if LOTR is anything to go by, I would be more than surprised if the hobbit films were short.

There's a big difference though. The decision to make LOTR into 3 films was made before they started filming it, and making it into 3 films was logical since there was 3 books. The Hobbit is one short book (plus the info in ROTK appendices) and they made the decision to split it into 3 films AFTER they'd finished filming it.

Oh well, it doesn't really matter. I'm just looking forward to 2015 when I'll be able to watch the extended editions of all 6 films in the Tolkien saga! I still really really hope they make a film about the fall of Numenor and war of the last alliance though - but I doubt they will since it wouldn't be as commercially viable - no hobbits, no Gandalf, darker story etc.

Fair dos - my comparison was unfair. Although I still don't think that they would have split it into three films unless they had the material for it. Needless to say, I will be more than disappointed if it's padded with lots of bad or unnecessary scenes.

You can always hold out hope. It may also turn up sometime in the more distant future - when many actors from LOTR are no longer available, the place to turn for more Tolkien would be stories set with new character sets.

By the way, that link puts forward a very good argument.

I absolutely loved The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Hobbit looks a bit too silly to me though... and I would have much preferred one very good film over three films. I'll reserve full judgement of course.

I think PJ is making a big mistake, he doesn't have the support of the media anymore, nor people inside the industry.

It is normal to bash a PJ film now. He got too big for his boots after LOTR, people begrudgingly gave him respect for it, but ultimately he doesn't suck up enough to Hollywood to be given any more of a leeway.

King Kong, deserved to be be panned.

The Lovely Bones, was a different type of film, but the same problems arose.

The Hobbit will be panned like Phantom Menace/AOTC/ROTS.

In a way I am quite disappointed with PJ. He had the world at his feet after LOTR, yet I think in retrospect maybe too much praise was lavished on the final 2 films, as clearly they were not upto the standard of the mesmeric FOTR.

It has been a slow depression for PJ.

If these movies were nerd movies, then they wouldn't contain as much as they do. Jackson seems to be ignoring the entire perspective of the book, for a start.

    Re: The Hobbit
I don't have much of an issue with it being made into three films, as long as it is drawing on material from the LOTR appendices rather than just stretching out The Hobbit, which would just be stupid.
After all, there is a vast wealth of material that could be used in that way, as shown by the fact that the LOTR appendices exist, because there's so much of this story that didn't quite fit into the narrative of the books. So if PJ does it right, then he could be bridging the gap between Bilbo's tale and the start of LOTR in a way that's a lot more fleshed out than just the prologue in Fellowship of the Ring.
