Before I'd started reading the books, I was told that they were a bit gory and risqué, so I expected something like an amped-up Bernard Cornwell. Seriously, all there is is the occasional sex reference and gore no worse than any historical novel centred around battles and war, which is almost exactly what ASOIAF is.

What does everyone else think? Are these books particularly graphic, or am I just far too used to sex and violence?

I started reading the books yesterday, and I'm only on the 2nd Catelyn chapter of Book 1, but OMFG they are amazing xD

Hah, I've just finished watching Game of Thrones and I'd like to read the books.
Which tomes can I read without spoiling the next seasons of the show?

The show basically covers the first book- Game of Thrones.
Clash of Kings will cover the second series

Ah, so does the first book end on a cliff hanger as well?

Well, they're fairly controversial themes. For example, sex and violence pervade most movies today. But how often do movies feature rampant incest? Or infanticide (killing of babies/toddlers)? How about really brutal rape scenes, followed by merciless death?

So apart from it being on the extreme end (though I'm sure many books are more extreme, more often) it's just yoru average 18+ violent novel, I guess.

It's what makes the series so good, I think. Real life is full of extreme violence and perversion. What you read in the newspapers is only the tip of the iceberg. Life is a thousand shades of grey.

My copy of A Dance with Dragons arrived! It's a bloody tome. Huge. 1048 big pages, with small print text. This should keep me going for a while.

I've decided Theon Greyjoy is my new favourite character, half way through a clash of kings. If he's killed off I'm going to cry.

It ends at exactly the same place as the end of the last episode of the series, right down to the you-know-whats with you-know-who xD

I've read all the others, but I can't remember for the life of me what happened, so I suppose if I want to read this one, I'll have to go back and read the others. Damn.

I watched the tv series first, thought it was great and bought a pack with the first 4 books for a great deal. I've read about 100 pages og 'A Game of Thrones'.

Well I started reading this series before the TV prog made it hip to do so...

So far I've read A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings and I enjoyed them; I do, however, remember enjoying the first more than the sequel. They're good books, full of intrigue, brutality and back-stabbery plus a load of memorable characters, especially Tyrion Lannister, who really is a fun character to read about.

One strory line I remember finding really dull was the Dany thread, which only got even more boring in the sequel. Thankfully though her particular thread doesn't take up much space, although it does seem that she will become more significant (not in a good way) as the series develops. Bugger.

But they are a good read, and no doubt I will end up reading the third sooner rather than later.

Reading the Gormenghast trilogy at the moment, which is bloody good.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Went book shopping half asleep yesterday & ended up with a 2nd copy of 'A Storm of Swords (2nd half)' instead of 'A feast for Crows', just coming to the end of 'A Clash of Kings' though so not an immediate problem :o:

Finding both Danaerys & Theon to be marmite characters, personally I can't stand Theon & am just skimming his chapters, whereas some people I know really enjoy them; although they are all slightly further ahead than me so maybe my opinion on him will improve...time will tell. Dany on the other hand I find fascinating, can see why some people don't like her, but personally I quite look forward to her chapters :emog:

I think Dreamseeker put it really well. There is a lot of gore, incest and brutal rape though.

I have to admit, I was disappointed as well. This took 6 years to come out? There's a description in there about Dany ****ting turds ffs.

I thought the Dany chapters were tedious grinds. Did not like them at all.

She doesn't do anything exciting in this new one either. It's like she's going from nowhere to nowhere and getting nothing real done. She needs to get her ass to Westeros.

The problem with Dany's chapters is that GRRM wrote himself into a corner. There was no realistic way for Dany to get out of Meereen while keeping her values, and it just caused Dany's chapters to become slow and boring while GRRM struggled to find a way out of it.
