Pretty silly question, but what is the 30 day shred?
Not a silly question at all! It's a (really, really great) workout DVD by one of the trainers of The Biggest Loser USA called Jillian Michaels. Here, have a nosy: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jillian-Mich...5664402&sr=8-1

Definitely effective! I managed to lose my initial 14lbs by doing it while I was at uni in Feb/March. I ate healthily too of course but I think 30DS played a big part in helping me lose weight, and generally feeling much better.

How have you been finding the protein shakes out of interest? Do you think they make you feel really full and eat less? Have you noticed any other changes since starting drinking them? I'm considering getting some, but you don't often hear about girls using them, so I'm not really sure.
I've just been using them mainly as recovery drinks after my gym sessions, or to add a few extra calories or extra protein if I'm a bit low for the day (because I often struggle to get enough protein from food alone). They do fill me up massively, and tend to stave off hunger but that's not why I take them! Not sure about results as I have nothing to compare it with, but I am feeling a lot more muscle definition in my arms and legs. Just don't know whether to put that down to the extra protein or the fact I've been at the gym!
There's no reason girls shouldn't use them to supplement protein or to aid muscle recovery after exercise. The one I have is from a range designed specifially for women (Maxitone); it's low carb and low fat, and 120cals a serving, so it's not like it would "bulk" me up or anything!

Felt like crap yesterday due to a stressful week with little sleep (missed pretty much a whole night thanks to some idiots in our block of flats). I had a rest day from the gym and upped my cals to around 2100 (slightly above maintenance for me) and then after a good (long) nights sleep I woke up again today good to go. Just had a really good gym session involving weights and a strong (for me anyway) 2k run. Also girlfriend is back today after being away for a week so hopefully more exercise (and a massage if I'm lucky) tonight

    Feelin' fine again

How much room do you need to do it? Because I'd like to get something like this for uni when I go back, but I have a titchy room and all of the exercise dvds that I've had before have required bouncing around all over the place!

Be careful not to pay any extra for protein or other supplements targeted towards women.

At the end of the day, a protein powder is just a certain type of dried protein with some carbs (varying from very little to a lot in bulk powders). Ones marketed towards women are often more expensive because it is just a marketing ploy so that more women will buy them based on the fact that many would be put off buying a stereotypically 'masculine' product but aren't as embarrased if the packaging states that it is a womens' product - the contents are still the same! You can still get plain protein powders that are like 80-90% protein or more.

This is reverse of the same marketing one-two that leads men to pay 5 times more for a moisturiser because it says 'aftershave balm' on it. It all started off with 'mansize tissues' by Kleenex 'ah, it says man in it - therefore I am not gay if I buy tissues now'

    Just my $0.02

I know, thank you. I bought the one I bought because of the ones available at the shop I went to, it was the one with the lowest fat & carb content. I had my eye on a different one to get (PHD diet whey), but I'd have had to order it online and wanted one quickly!

If you can lie yourself on the floor and stretch your arms out to the sides then that is (just) enough space. That's the kind of space I did it in when I was at uni.

Perfect! I also meant to ask if you need any hand weights?

Yes, light ones. I use 3kg at the moment (on the rare occasions I do it) but started out with 1kg. If you don't have any, Argos sell them pretty cheap.

I think I have some 2.5kg plus wrist weights so I should be ok.... might have to see if I have any smaller ones though because my upper body is so weak!

For 1-3kg weights, you could always use household goods like bags of potatoes etc. !

Could somebody give me tips on being healthy when not trying to lose weight, please? I've been advised to gain some by the GP to deal with GAD, depression and panic disorder. I'm not underweight but am in recovery from an ED too, only just returned to an ideal weight, know I'm really trying to run a consistent deficit and constantly deal with disordered eating thoughts, e.g.:

    a) I exercise most to all days of the week and right now maintain a BMI of about 20 but have had to reduce the intensity because I'm afraid of cardiac arrest from "being so fat". I feel a little anxious and guilty when I don't exercise one day for any particular reason, and very guilty if I can't reach a certain level of intensity but afraid of it if I do at the same time. This has reached a level where I'm sometimes scared to climb stairs.
    b) I've become very unreasonably anxious about salt and fat. Even healthy fats like nuts, seeds and fish seem a bad choice now. To have a treat like a packet of crisps, a chocolate bar or a cake has become an agonising decision. Sometimes I get fed up, end up having it (say at a family gathering) and then often get depressed, guilty and anxious for going ahead and "binging".

I'm trying to do this while doing recommended resistance training to rebuild muscle lost from the ED and, no surprises here, it's not really working.
I'm going to uni in a week and while I'm living at home so the food thing shouldn't be too much of an issue in terms of cooking healthy meals, really can't be bothered having this on top of my studies. Any advice would be great thanks?

My healthy eating went out the window in a blaze of chicken in a bucket shaped house and the crunchy delight of loads of chips swimming in burger sauce.

Good morning everyone! Today is my absolute last day of eating crap, then I'm back to it. Hopefully will have a good first week, as my body will have a shock after this week (even though I haven't actually gained any weight.. strange). Got three weeks of holiday left before going back to uni, so should b able to lose a few more pounds before then if I'm really good.

Just got to force the rest of my birthday cake on my poor family today (I've been making them have a slice for practically every meal, lol, the junk food needs to GO!)

I am definitely deciding to gain weight. Something I haven't mentioned on here is that I haven't had a period since june... I'm sure it must be due to my weight as nothing else has changed, unless I'm deficient in something maybe. I will ask the GP but until then I'm assuming its because of my weight.
Yeah in this case I agree that you should. highly that you stopped your period because your body fat percentage is way too low. Periods stopping is usually a huge indicator in telling one that they should stop losing.

I'm sure you will be fine and make sure you gain the weight from eating health foods

Could it be that you haven't actually been eating as much as you thought? Either way. good luck getting back on the wagon, I'm sure having had this break will give you positive results. I've heard a lot about how switching things up every now and again helps your body to lose more weight in the long run.

    ----

As for me, I am slightly hungover this morning, even though I didn't even drink much. A gin & tonic then 2 pints of cider. I don't think my body enjoyed the alcohol AT ALL. My stomach got really bloated and is still sore today :/
Boyfriend and I have to walk back to town to collect cars then he wants to go to the gym, so I'm going to *try* and brave it. Probably won't be a very tough workout for me at all, but we'll see how it goes...
