Does anyone else think it's kind of stupid you can't get full academics mark unless you have achieved A2's... I mean, the majority of applicants will still have their A2's pending.
Tbh that puts most applicants in the same boat, and it's good because it can give re-applicants an advantage from actually achieving their grades, which is different from being predicted them lol.
I know a few people who missed their offers this year because A2 is a completley different world to As. -
Re: Leeds Medical School Applicants 2012Yes that's true.(Original post by joemullally)

Haha oh dear, great thought as I start my A2's tomorrow.

Re: Leeds Medical School Applicants 2012Hi *Funky-buddha* I’m applying to the same places as you for 2012 and would really appreciate any advice and if you don’t mind me asking having a look at your personal statement.(Original post by *Funky-buddha*)
I don't have a copy on me, sorry.
I haven't logged onto UCAS for months so I'll check if it's still saved there after my highly annoying essay

Re: Leeds Medical School Applicants 2012That's ok, As long as you work you'll be grand.(Original post by liviaaa)
Yes that's true.

I did much better at A2 than I did at As because I was a different person doing my A2's
Plus revising with a certain crazy chineese guy from college for most spare hours before exams helped.
I could revise with him because he's awesome and chineese.
And I didn't get suicidal because he's completley mental and a good laugh to be around. -

Re: Leeds Medical School Applicants 2012He really was. He was an As though so we didn't like revise the same stuff.
We'd do some mocks and some hardcore revision, then talk about some really rare far out stuff.
Seriously though we spent hours in the local uni library (because he prefered the architecture compared to the college library)
He was an absolute mentalist at times though, the night before his first As ICT exam he pulled an allnighter and drank 15 red bulls (he'd never drank red bull before)
came in the next day saying how he didn't think his exam wen't well because he couldn't stop his hand shaking.
He didn't do well in that exam . . . -
Re: Leeds Medical School Applicants 2012Ahh okay. Haha omg he sounds a bit extreme, well I guess what ever works for you.(Original post by joemullally)

(Or not for him in this case ^)
So, did you get any useful feedback from Leeds last year? -

So, did you get any useful feedback from Leeds last year?
they told me exactly what I got for each section.
academics :
9/16
reference : 6/6
PS/ 18/24:
split into
Insight and motivation : 4/6
responsiblity : 4/6
Social awerness : 6/6
and Extra curricular achievement: 4/6
so in total I got 33/46
and I needed 39 for an interview.
Hopefully with my two bonus points for acheiving A*A*AA at A2.
I can get 4 extra from my Ps this year and hopefully get an interview.
I should have done since i'm now working two jobs (one full time and one part time) in a hopsital so that will shoe insight, motivation and responsibility.
And I'm training with the welsh bridge team (selection for it's in february, and i've been nominated to be an olympic torchbearer which I hope i'll get selected for.
So that should increase my extra curricular acheivement? -
Re: Leeds Medical School Applicants 2012Thanks, that's helped me, so I know now what I need to make sure I've included in my PS.(Original post by joemullally)

You did well in social awareness! How do you think you gained these marks, like through voluntary etc? Also, do you think for extra curricular they want quality or quantity to get the marks? Haha, sorry for treating you like an expert or something.

And tbf with the social awerness I've got a lot of voluntary that i've done for my own reasons. e.g. I'm a founder member of a consituted organisation (essentially a registered charity) and also a current youth liason officer for them
Also like i done another few things. It's on my profile.
And I don't know about the quality vs quantity thing.
It's probably best to have both :P
But I'd imagine it's better to be really good at one or two things than ok at a lot of things. -
Re: Leeds Medical School Applicants 2012Oh my bad, I must have skimmed over that in the first post.(Original post by joemullally)

Your PS sounds like it was quite good! Thanks for all your help.
If you have any questions about Leeds as a city feel free to ask - I live there.

Tbf when I went to the open day last year I really loved what I saw of Leeds as a city.
It's a shame the free inner city bus went because I thought that was a really really nice thing to put on.
But the people all seemed really friendly, unlike some other cities in the uk. -
Re: Leeds Medical School Applicants 2012Hmm I like the shops.(Original post by joemullally)

Nice big variety, I actually prefer shopping in Leeds to London as there are similar shops, without the ridiculous queues for the tills/changing rooms haha. It's also good how close it is to Sheffield/Manchester/York/Harrogate etcc.
Ermm worst thing I would say is there are some quite rough areas, but just avoid them and the rest of the city is lovely.
Tbh I never used the free city bus, everything is quite compact once you're in the city so there's no real need! -

And also how far away are the studenty living areas from the uni for second year etc.
Also is the hospital far from the uni as i'm sure we'll have placements. -
Re: Leeds Medical School Applicants 2012Ermm the uni is probably about 5 min away to drive (not at rush hour), I've never walked it but I'd say maybe 20 mins to walk?(Original post by joemullally)

I don't know where you stay in second year? What area is it?
The hospital isn't far, I'd say it's hlaf way between the city and the uni, the hospital is huge though, so it will vary to which bit you're going to. -

And a 20 min walk isn't bad at all :P
but yeah it seems a nice place.
I don't know whether I'd take my car or not, it would depend on how far things are / parking near the halls/ whether i'd actually need it other than going there and getting home.
the train station's quite close from what I remember. -

I would say you wouldn't need a car once you got there, assuming your placements were in Leeds. (Do they do any in Bradford?)
The train station is the other side of the city centre from the uni, but wouldn't take long by taxi.
