    Hi again,

Has anyone taken the speech and language therapy 2 day course at City Lit? How did you find it?

    Thanks!

You can get a loan which is non-income assessed from Student Finance, which comes to around £2324 (assuming that you're living away from home) on top of the £1000 grant and income assessed bursary from the NHS.
No, I'm living at home. From what I've been told is, I don't need to apply for loans as my tuition fees are being paid for and I don't need accommodation. Oh, I didn't know we get income-assessed bursary from NHS! Please could you give me more information on this. Thanks for your help.

It's not compulsory to get the Student Finance loan, but as it's the cheapest loan you will ever get, so it's probably worth it. If you live at home, you would get a loan of about £1700.

In addition to your tuition fees being paid, you will get a £1000 grant and an income assessed bursary from the NHS. You'll get correspondence about this from the NHS when your uni have informed them of your offer (sorry I can't remember whether you are applying for 2012 or 2013 entry). The bursary can be anything from £1000-£5000 depending on your financial circumstances (you probably won't get the full amount because you are living at home).

    Hope that helps.

Oh ok. But with the loan, do you have to pay back with interest? due to religious reasons I'm not able to pay back with interest, so I was advised not to apply for the loan.

I'm 2012 student ok I have my offer, but just waiting for NHS Bursaries to contact me. Hope it's soon, getting abit impatient now! Thank you so much for clearing things up!

Speaking of NHS bursaries, I got my award notification today and it's all roughly what I expected plus about £80 extra from the extra weeks allowance. I'm suprised how fast they've been with me actually, especially since I had to change my application twice. Are you trying to prove you're an independent student or something like that? Hope you get it all sorted out.
All sorted I persuaded them to give me the full amount - phew, so relieved! Glad you've got yours all sorted - not long left now

Yes! Sorry for uber quick reply but I took that course and it was so useful! You meet a variety of clients and get a lot to talk about in your personal statement - worth every penny Will reply more later.

Oh, good! Same, I think i'm going to have just under £6000 for next year which should be fine. A lot of my friends starting NHS courses are getting barely anything because of the means-testing, so i'm feeling quite lucky. I hope I do get into Newcastle because I don't want to have to faff around changing my application and having my bursary recalculated

You can get a loan from an Islamic bank that doesn't incur interest, but I don't know much about that so you'll have to research it.

Yeah, same here. It's taken such a weight off my shoulders knowing I'll have that funding (will still need a job, though!). What day do you guys get your A-Level results?

Yeah, I got an email from them on the 1st of June. You can apply now without being invited, but if your course has more weeks than usual, they won't be able to assess you for them yet.

We get them on the 16th of August - seems so far away right now! I know, i'm going to start applying for part time jobs in the city I end up in a couple of weeks before I start, I don't want to get there and find everything has been snapped up already.

6 weeks - it'll fly by! (it better do - I've got 8 weeks left of work, haha). good idea RE the jobs; I've already sent my CV off to Reading's union.

I'm in the lowest income bracket so my total award next year is £2591, plus £1000, and a bit extra because my course is longer than usual. The guaranteed £1000 is in addition to the means-tested bursary, yes. In total you'll get £1700 + £1000 + whatever bursary your household income entitles you to
Ohh right okay, that's good to know there's the extra means-tested bursary too. Thank you for clearing that up, I was getting so confused!!

    Cool, thank you!

I'm still pretty new to SLT, spent the last four days on the Internet emailing and calling people and places about voluntary work / shadowing.. so far I am helping out at stroke club and fingers crossed I have a days shadowing an SLT for a children's centre.

I've been flicking back through a few of the old posts... darn it I wish SLT had been my original choice, I might have had a place by now!!!!

Haha oh me too... I completed an entire degree before I discovered SLT!

Sounds like you're doing all the right things, though Let us know if you have any questions; I know I had a million when I started looking into it all last year! Definitely recommend the CityLit course, anyway - and one at Northwick Park Hospital in London (two days for £50), but that's not until November... You could maybe mention your intentions to do it, though, in your PS.

I've not had an email! I'm worried now. Is the grant and NHS income-assessed bursary from the same company?

I don't think many people have had their emails yet, so don't worry! Their facebook page says to expect emails this month, so it shouldn't be too long. Yeah, it's the same company and they assess you for the grant and bursary from the same application, so it's not too complicated when you get started

Oh ok, I have been panicking so much! I'll just sort out the evidences out that I'll need to provide, which means renewing my passport. Am I right in thinking, I don't have to do anything and the uni that has offered me a place will pass on my details to NHS student bursaries, who will then contact me? I am so confused ! Thanks for your help.

Yep, you're right You'll receive an email from the NHS within the next two weeks inviting you to apply. In the meantime, just get your evidence ready and twiddle your thumbs! x
