Computing/Computer Science Books

Hey,

Can anyone give me some advice on any particular books that I should read up on or any particular topics that I should read up on before starting a Computer or Computer Science Course at Uni. Apart from the obvious ones like Java etc.

Thanks!

A good one to start with is CODE by Charles Petzold.

Introduction to Algorithms by CLSR

Introduction to the Theory of Computation by Michael Sipser

Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs
free here: http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/full-text/book/book.html

An Introduction to Database Systems by CJ Date

Code Complete by Steve McConnell

Reading and understanding all those books would make you a better computer scientist than 99% of the graduates in the UK.
There's a list of suggested reading on the Oxford admissions website too: http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/admissions/ugrad/Background_reading
