Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!What other subjects apart from Latin are you studying? Regarding the personal statement, have you read many linguistics related books? I found that reading books (and bookmarking particular pages of interest) served as a good source of inspiration for beginning to write mine and for getting to the heart of exactly why I wanted to study linguistics.(Original post by prettified)
Coincidence! I wanted to apply for Classics courses as well, but then I discovered linguistics and fell in love
I still really enjoy Latin, but linguistics, oh my gosh.
I really need to get on this personal statement thing-- I seriously have no idea where to start...
How did results day go for you?
Results went well thanks - I got 5A*s (though one was in General Studies), which I was pleased and a bit surprised about - so I'm nervous and excited about Cambridge.

Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!Hi. I personally think that, provided you're going to be predicted A*AA, and you really like the look of the Cambridge course, you should definitely apply. You've got nothing to lose by applying and don't want to regret not having applied when you're older. No-one has any guarantees about being made an offer anyway, so I think, as I've said, if you like the course, apply. And ensure that you really convey your passion for wanting to study the subject in your PS.(Original post by Jessikat)
Hi guys! How were your results? Mine were as follows:
English Lit/Lang: A - 196/200 (full marks in the exam, hell yes!)
Classical Civilisations: A - something like 180/200
Psychology: A - 162/200
German: B - 159/200 - 1 mark off an A! Getting it remarked.
General Studies: A
I'm dropping Psych and will probably be predicted A*AA for A2. Do you think I would still have a case for Cambridge or is it now all hopeless?
You may find this link interesting: http://www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/unde...te/statistics/. It basically shows you different statistics. For example, you can see, for each college, how many applicants for Linguistics there were and how many offers were made. Kings had a lot of applicants last year when compared to other colleges. However, when you compare Lingustics to other subjects, you see that Linguistics is not a comparatively popular course. -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!Those are fantastic results, congratulations!(Original post by Marisa_Grace)

I am studying... something like 11 subjects? I am an European student
Maths, physics, chemistry, astronomy, philosophy, history, foreign languages, literature, art history, time-wasting and physical education
it sounds a bit like a waste of (my) time, but I don't dislike any of these subjects, and I count myself lucky for this! I would have committed suicide or homicide if I'd had to take a subject I really hated.
Thanks for the PS/books tip! I have been reading a couple of linguistics books, but summer makes me lazy and I have been, instead, devouring sci-fi books and coming-of-age novels. Something tells me that these won't help me re: my application/PS problem

Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!Thanks for your opinion! I posted my predicament in the 'Are my grades good enough?' thread for Cambridge but got no replies.(Original post by Marisa_Grace)

I think I'm going to give Cambridge a go. You're right; I'll never know otherwise. Thanks for that statistical information, too! I knew admissions for Linguistics were low... But not THAT low.

. Wow you're lucky you get to study so many subjects! I would have loved to study philosophy and art history in addition to my subjects. Which country are you from?
Regarding the sci-fi books, you could actually put in your PS down the bottom how you like reading in your spare time; I had a small paragraph at the bottom about my interests among which I mentioned reading briefly, though I guess they won't be of much help for the main bit of your PS! -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!Hi! I can't say anything about your grades because I'm an EU applicant, but there are speech therapy undergraduate degrees that might be of interest to you!(Original post by Farah-Lou)
Hi Guys! This is literally my first post on TSR!
anywayy, yeah i'd really like to do linguistics at uni! My possible choices are:
Cambridge
UCL
Edinburgh
Leeds
York
My AS grades were A (French), B (Theology), B (Economics) and C (German) (very disappointing
), i'm dropping German and retaking some modules so hopefully i end up with AAAB...
my gcse's were 6 A*'s, 3 A's and a B.
Am i aiming too high with regards to my application for cambridge?? please be honest... i don't want to waste an application
I'd really like to be a speech therapist when i'm older and i'm wondering if it's a good idea to include work experience shadowing a speech therapist in my personal statement?
SORRYYY for all the questions! i'm just pretty concerned haha
Earlier this year I read a bit about UCL's speech therapy programme, it's really fascinating...
-
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!I will be studying French and Linguistics at Lancaster this year. I was encouraged to apply to Oxford but backed out at the last minute (I got the grades to go there in the end too...) and I set my heart on going to Edinburgh...who rejected me. Yeah I'm still bitter about that one haha.(Original post by Farah-Lou)

But now I'm so happy I'm going to Lancaster.
Anyway, the reason I'm quoting you is because I was going to be applying to Oxford with AS grades: AAACC and GCSE's: 10A'S 2 B'S. I was predicted A*AA at A level. My GCSE's weren't fantastic but I was still urged to apply, so I'd say go for it, just don't set your heart on it because no matter how amazing your application and interview is, the chances are always slim. Very slim in fact.
Also, I want to be a speech therapist! I wasn't sure of it until I taught English in France this summer and now I'm gutted I didn't apply for a speech therapy undergrad. If you've had experience with SLT's and are sure that's what you want to do then go for the undergrad (in my opinion). It's quicker and saves on fees (NHS will pay).
If you're worried about the 'prestige' of the uni's that do the speech therapy (because that was one of my concerns) then don't worry. There are so few SLT graduates that employers don't really care which uni you went to
Good luck! -

Ahhh good luck with your course! yeah, my heart isn't set on Cambridge at all, i'm just applying because i don't want to regret it!
Speech therapy is something i'd really reallyyy like to explore further
I actually received speech therapy because i used to have a stammer and also my sister and father both have stammers. Reckon it is a good idea to mention this in my personal statement, to make it more... personal?
I was recently told that reading books from the Cambridge reading list may 'lack initiative' but these books seem to be the only linguistics related books I can find! (i haven't looked much but meh
) Do you reckon reading 2 is enough?
sorry for all the questions! I'm just really keen to make up for my terrible AS results! It's so intimidating going through threads and seeing people with like 7A*'s at A2
Seeing a speech therapy degree at roehampton is how i first knew that it was even a possible career option for me. the prospect of an actual undergrad degree in it sounds AMAZING but if i told my family and friends this... they would be sure to laugh in my face haha! it's not a problem though, i do genuinely want to do linguistics and then the conversion course after completeing my degree
thanks for the good luck by the way, i'm gonna need it! -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!I'd definitely use that personal experience in your statement, but don't let speech therapy dominate your PS. Yeaah I only read 1 linguistics book (language acquisition to be precise) but I read more French books. I live in a small town and I just went into the local library and found a shelf full of linguistics/language books, so there are plenty! Just look in the library.(Original post by Farah-Lou)

I can't blame you for wanting to do a linguistics undergrad first because that's what I'm doing
But try not to make your PS a speech therapy PS.
As for grades, your AS grades were fine but predicted grades are far more important for UCAS -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!
Fantastic! More fellow linguists! Having a last minute panic about my application, which has to go in before tomorrow!
I think I am going to give Cambridge a shot because there is nothing to lose! Most probably won't get in like, but hey it's life experience
Just wondering which college?! And whether to apply for ling and a lang elsewhere ponderponderponder in which case maybe I should have the wildcard as Oxford as they do ling/lang hmm oh gosh the indecision!
-
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!If you want to apply for language+linguistics elsewhere, perhaps it's better if you go for Oxford's linguistics+language options! I would have totally chosen Oxford if only they had language options I liked, but alas, they don't, or if they do they won't allow me to study them, so it's Cambridge for me(Original post by iyley)

Oxford also has a lot of finance help for students beginning in 2012, so that's a plus in their favour. I got an email from them saying that they had finally finalized their student finance bursaries/scholarships situation, and it's a lot of money for people coming from certain income bracket families.

If you don't mind me asking, what didn't you like about their language options? I see they are very literature based, which makes me a bit wobbly...! Which college at Cam are you applying to?
Yes, the Oxford bursaries seem great, which makes me like them more as it seems they are really encouraging people from lower income backgrounds, trying to get away from old stereotypes. -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!The language I wanted to study alongside Linguistics wasn't available as ab initio, and everything else didn't inspire me as much! That's why I decided to apply for straight Linguistics(Original post by iyley)

Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!
Heyo student coming from canada here!, i took an intro to linguistics course at my uni in BC, and thats when i knew this was what i wanted to do.
I'm coming to england because of the more focused degree programs and the fact that i love london ^^
unfortunately my grades are wretched so i'm applying to QMUL, KCL, U of Westminster, and i dunno where else...
University of westminster is really my safety (except the admissions email i got from them is kinda worrying)
I'm mostly applying for linguistics and french, although i would like to learn another language, i would prefer a straight linguistics program... unfortunately SOAS and UCL's admissions are too high for the likes of me
Is it possible to do a year at U of Westminster, and then maybe transfer into second year in a straight linguistics program? Just curious, i might end up loving U of W, who knows( so far i love the look of the course) :P
Also, what universities have the lowest entry requirements for lang+ling or straight ling outside of london? (just in case i don;t get into my choices in london, i'd like a for sure thats at least in england)
also:
IB predicted: 32
IB results:25
(i have extenuating circumstances, but i feel weird asking a teacher to write it in my reference..especially since i graduated from highschool in 2010 it just feels like its too late to claim that...)
My highschool grades: all above 70% in 5 grade 12 subjects (which meets requirements for u of w, but my ib marks don't..hence worrying email
) Also just barely misses requirements for QMUL
help would be lovely

Sorry, not sure if I can be of that much help but if you use this website: http://www.ucas.com/students/courses...2012searchint/
you can find all the linguistics courses in the UK and then have a look at the entry requirements. Also, I would just go for it about the teacher reference, if they are having to write one anyway, and if putting it in will help you in the future, I would say do it - of course I don't know the situation and whether I would do the same if it was me! But, you might not see this teacher again, but the reference will affect your future? I'm sure they won't mind
I hope this is some help, and that other people can fill in the bits I have missed!
Good luck!

Are you looking for this page? http://www.ling-phil.ox.ac.uk/undergrads I couldn't find anything else!(Original post by iyley)
On another note, does anyone have any info about the Oxford ling modules? I can't seem to find detailed information! -

Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!
Hi everyone
another literal first-poster here, what is it about seeing fellow linguists that makes us want to join in! It's so rare to have a current, relevant thread about Linguistics, so I thought I ought to contribute something.
My application's got to go off pretty soon, and I'm applying to similar places to a few of you:
Cambridge
UCL
Edinburgh
Sheffield
Newcastle
- that's as it stands, anyway!
I still really enjoy Latin, but linguistics, oh my gosh.
I really need to get on this personal statement thing-- I seriously have no idea where to start...
