Where are your offers from, and the grades they want?
hfdaskjfhjkasdh kjshndfakjhkdsjahfkj i just can't seem to do it! It will make it all seem so real! (Doesn't help on the lack of an insurance atm!)
Looool, it gets so tiring after explaining it, to everyone. -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!Why? Cambridge aren't the best for linguistics anyway which is why they never had their own course until 18 months ago.(Original post by Firecrackerchild)
Indeed, I'm very glad Cambridge offered it - I don't do a MFL, so in previous years I would have had to not apply to Oxbridge, which I would have so regretted. Hopefully, with more and more people applying for linguistics, more people will know what it is, ending the 'wtf' faces I currently get!
I wasn't bothered at all about not applying to Oxbridge - I had a look into it when I was considering applying for something else but it wasn't something that appealed to me for a number of reasons.
Try doing linguistics and anthropology. Linguistics people get more as they've heard of it in the context of languages, anthropology, meanwhile, people just don't have a clue what it is! -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!ahahah we have similar typing styles! It must be a linguist thing!(Original post by Firecrackerchild)

I have actually done student finance, shockingly! Don't know where I am trying to go yet, but I can get the loans for it! ahah wonky priorities
Edinburgh is your firm, yes? Where are you thinking for insurance?
It's scary, but I haven't quite realised that it's actually going to happen! I've filled all this jazz out but not clicked that I'm (hopefully!) going!
My favourite thing is that it always follows a specific pattern - people ask what it is, and I try to explain (and fail!), then there is a long pause/other conversation, then they ask "so what can you do with that?" aahah yaay for non job-specific degrees! -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!I'm surprised about this! I always thought anthropology was quite well known! But, actually, I guess I knew someone who did it so, hmm(Original post by oxymoronic)

That must have made a FANTASTIC combination!
You could go and work in the Amazon, documenting endangererd languages! -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!I could.... however, I've wound up teaching instead! One of my friends is currently doing a PhD in pretty much just that though!(Original post by iyley)

I'm very much a linguistic anthropologist though - I love things related to culture -- language -- translation as if a concept doesn't exist, can it be understood? If something doesn't exist in your language, can you still understand it, and if you can understand it, to what extent can you understand it?
I did a lot about language educational policies in my final year as I knew I was going into teaching, as its really cool/scary that language can be used to control so many things so the languages taught in an educational system impact so much on other areas of life. -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!I had the predicted grades required, and having a wide range of interests (I'd be very content and happy to do a degree in 3 out of my 4 A-Levels, hence the joint degree), I may not have necessarily applied for Linguistics, and I think I would have regretted never having tried Oxbridge. Why? Cambridge aren't the best for linguistics anyway which is why they never had their own course until 18 months ago.

To agree with your second post about the culture/language/ translation part, I completely agree! How you get across concepts in one language to another, if the second doesn't have it, is mind boggling!
and because we are clearly amazing peopleahahah we have similar typing styles! It must be a linguist thing!

I'm waiting on my parents unfortunately -.- eeeeeeeep I firmed and insured today! But no, I firmed York instead, and Leeds as my insurance, despite the Edinburgh offer being lower.
YES! I usually add that I'd like to continue after the BA, and eventually, if all goes well, do a PhD
But I'd HATE to be an English Language teacher, (a Professor would be cool.......not gonna happen but i can dream!) it just doesn't appeal to me at all.

Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!
Hi everyone! After months of nervewracking waiting, I received a Conditional to study linguistics at Edinburgh! I'm really excited (though trying to stay focused on my work, because I really need to work hard to meet my condition [grumble last semester's math requirements pooping on my GPA grumble]).

Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!I would call them up if you haven't already cause I got my rejection quickly and then another offer very soon after that. I'm guessing if you haven't heard now from the course you're being considered for a joint?(Original post by elebuughoti)
Should I be really worried that I have heard nothing, not even a whisper, from Edinburgh about my Linguistics Q100 application? -
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!Actually, in a more recent post I was pleased to discover I had been made a Conditional offer! I just need to obtain my Associate's degree with a final GPA of 3.0.(Original post by anna258)

I phoned them just the day before I discovered my offer. Worth the wait! I'm working hard to meet my condition now (keeping my GPA from dropping from a tough class, not trying to bring it up--it's 3.4 right now!)

Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!I am thinking of County cos it is close to where we will have our lectures, you?(Original post by KeepItSecret)
If all goes to plan!!
Yay! Future schoolmate!
Which college are you thinking of?
-
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!I'm thinking of Furness at the moment because it's close to where we'll have all the lectures and seminars, and I like the sound of it from what I've been told by others.(Original post by xxmoist)

But on the website it says to put two colleges down when you apply for accommodation in May, so I was thinking of putting Furness and County
Are you doing straight linguistics?
-
Re: Linguistics Applicants 2012!
Oh, I don't know anyone studying there personally, but from talking with people who have relatives/friends there most of them seem to love Furness!
(EDIT: Not to mention the tour guides I had when i visited were very persuasive! :P)
I'm starting to like Pendle more than County. But it's so far away from lectures!
I felt bad rejecting other unis! But i suppose it's a necessary evil!
