Aww man that sucks, apparently we don't find out till July too about our 3rd year applications and SAAS deadline is the end of June I don't think it particularly matters though, if you just put zoology honours it can be easily changed later I think. You will probably get into zoology alright anyway since there are about 100 spaces, some of the other courses are much smaller. Were you far off the pre-req grades? They're trying to make as many people happy as possible so you should be okay

In the pre-requisites I got a C1 in both Animal Diversity and Evolutionary Biology but I got a D2 in Ecology and Conservation.

The rest of my results were various Cs and Ds.

My advisor said I probably wouldn't get in but he has a reputation of talking utter *******s towards this subject as there was a girl in my Evolutionary Biology lab who was repeating 2nd year because he told her to do that as she didn't have the grades but she got offered places in 3rd year but couldn't take them because of SAAS, she wasn't pleased.

I'm just gonna wait and hope tbh.

That isn't too bad, you might still get in there are quite alot if spaces in zoology and i heard ecology and conservation was a complete b**ch, so maybe everyone got Ds, your adviser sounds like a **** I wouldn't listen to that advice, even though we got that email saying "don't email us about entry to 3rd year!" you could maybe email them and say its essential for SAAS that you find out now :s

I did, and then got an automated reply saying that he was away until the 18th on some bloody jolly, not pleased :P

I think I buggered up Ecology and Conservation by getting an F1 in the 15% essay, I have no idea what I did wrong but it was an F1 apparently :P

Urg useless, is there no one else you can email? What about the head of second year she might be able to sort something :s

That sucks, you should have demanded to know why it was an F1 one of my friends did that in immunology in first semester when he got a D in an essay or something and they were actually quite helpful

It maybe won't be that bad if you have a real interest in it They've merged physiology and neuroscience for this year so it might be better than in my year when we had to do them as single subjects and physiology was horrifying.

something like 94% of people who take essential genetics in 2nd year pass it with a decent grade, I was at a meeting with all the life sciences lecturers and I'm sure that was the figure, which is reallyyyy good :P

Yes I did all biology in 2nd year, 10 classes, 6 in first semester but only 4 exams and 6 in second semester with 6 exams. Some of the 20 credit courses are awful it's like being back in school having to learn an entire years worth of work after getting used to the courses being split into 2 exams in first year. It's alright though most people I know managed to pass everything but it is a pretty big leap from first year. Sooooo many classessss.

No bother having so many classes a week is fine it's just when it comes to exams they all seem to come at once it's hard to study for them all I definitely wouldn't advise leaving all assignments to last minute though there's a fair few of them in both semesters, loads of class tests too

You have almost no labs a week in second year unless you take microbiology all the 10 credit classes have like 1 lab throughout the whole course, a couple have 2 and that's it. But with micro you have one lab a week in second semester but they're amazing good fun I really loved the micro labs I'm gonna miss them

Do you have them back now? Should by the end of tonight at least :P

I did all the human options too. The worst one was Physiology, but I quite liked the other 3 I didn't do any of the infection courses. I didn't take chemistry past 1st year either so I can't help there.

I would say avoid Bioengineering and Global Change (unless you want to learn about rice haha!). Forensic Bioscience was my favourite 2nd year module. The course was so interesting and the staff were really good. Also heard good things about Extreme Biology.

Good luck with your choices, if you want to know anything else just ask

Do you mind me asking you what your gpa is? The lady in charge of Zoology is possibly the loveliest woman ever and i know for a fact she will do whatever she can before rejecting someone. I'm sure you will be fine. If you want to know anything else about 3rd year just let me know

*Edit* Just read over your previous posts. Your grades for the animal biology pre-requiste's are fine, no idea what your adviser is on about! Who is it? Someone from the department?

My overall GPA for the 240 credits is 11.792 which is good/bad? Tbh i'm not entirely sure if it is good or not.

Oh and my advisor is Malcolm Kennedy, and from others I've spoke to who also have him as an advisor, they don't speak highly of him.

Butting in here, I can't stand Kennedy. Also it's a GPA of 12 to be considered for a masters I think so just under that you should definitely be allowed honours.

I don't want to get your hopes up, but I'm pretty sure you will not only get into 3rd year but you will get into Zoology honours. So try not to worry about it

And I don't really know Malcolm Kennedy very well, that sucks that he isn't a great adviser

Well done And indeed, time has gone by so quickly. I want to go back to 1st year and enjoy it more! :P

They might have changed the times/days of the level 2 courses but when I did it forensics didn't clash with anything else Making decisions is the worst, so I know how you feel :/ just try to remember if you pick a biology subject you don't like you only need to put up with it twice a week for 11 weeks (not including the 1 or 2 labs/tutorials)

Would appreciate it if anyone can share with me (or pm me) which aspects of Glasgow's system you find most helpful to your educational pursuit. I know that in this field, strong scientific understanding in biology is important, but I also wish to enter a programme with many opportunities to conduct fieldwork. How often are field trips organised for students to participate, and usually where? Any aspect you feel Glasgow can do more for her students?

So far from what I've read Nottingham seems like a uni with very strong research foundations. Not sure if this is going to be a factor in employment outlook etc..

Hi sorry I was waiting and hoping a zoologist would answer this. I'm doing a different life science so I can maybe help a little bit.

What I like most about the way glasgow does things is how flexible the study is. Though you apply for zoology you don't specialise into it until the start of 3rd year. First and second year are broad biology courses that cover pretty much every aspect of biology. Broadens your understanding :P This also means you get to sort of "try everything" So if you decide for some reason zoology isn't for you, or something different has caught your eye then you can still change courses, you aren't locked into anything until the beginning of 3rd year. I applied for anatomy, got in and realised human biology pretty much bores me to tears (we hadn't had much experience of other types in school, we only got offered higher human biology) and once I'd experienced other types I realised I liked them better. I'm now going into 3rd year Genetics.

As far as I know there's a fair few field trips in zoology, only in 3rd and 4th year (not 1st and 2nd for the above reasons) but I can't give you much details as I'm not a zoology. I've heard about week long field trips etc though. You'll get loads of experience at glasgow I'm sure. There's also a chance to do a work placement year out with which you spend a year working in the field between 3rd and 4th year, then return and graduate with an MSci. rather than a BSc. which is pretty good. A fair few zoologists go each year I think but it's very competitive as all of life sciences can apply and there's only about 40 places on the programme.

Personally I really like glasgow, no need to do much more for us in life sciences anyway, lots of support and help if you need it, active in research lecturers always willing to help out.

Glasgow also has massive research foundations, both glasgow and nottingham are members of the Russell Group so in my opinion they're pretty balanced on the research front. I'm hoping this will appeal to future employers too. :P
