Thanks sounds good, I'm pretty sure I got at least that and hoping for an A
It's only at AS level, too, if that helps more

    Hello

I would like some advice. I am sitting the UKCAT on 6 September. I want to apply to Warwick, Newcastle, Leciester. However, I could apply to Southampton but I do not have an A-level in Chemistry.

I have found a college to take me on and do A-level chemistry within a year for a fee of £652. However, I am not sure whether this is worth it just for Southampton (I only like the fact that they do not interview). They said I could apply and put on predicted grades - I am not sure what to do :-(

    Any Advice??
Personally, I wouldn't do it as IMO it's an unnecessary expense. You're better off putting that time and energy into the gamsat and going for gamsat unis in addition to the ukcat ones as you'd be opening up more options to yourself. I applied to southampton twice (I really wanted to go there as I liked their teaching style) and I still don't know what they want lol except that they seem to favour science grads having spoken to a friend who currently studies there... but they do not explicitly say that on their website/or in their prospectus. Also the fact that they don't interview is the worst reason to apply there! It's heavily competitive for this very reason!

    Graduates applying to Edinburgh Medicine
    Hi guys,
Currently thinking of applying to medicine in Edinburgh. As I am a graduate their website isn't too insightful in regards to what is needed.
Just wondering how people have gotten on with it? I have an undergrad and masters in Psychology. How much of an influence do they place on your degree?

Also, I am from Ireland (did my degree there). What would be my situation in regards to fees? The SAAS are rather difficult to understand. If I do have to pay fees would it just be the Scottish/EU fees (I think around 1800).

    Cheers!

I don't think it's £1820 per year for EU nationals with first degrees, I'm also not sure that you would get support from SAAS. Try to get in touch with Edinburgh's medical admissions team and SAAS!

Also, your degree will have to be a 2.1 minimum and you need to be able to fulfil the academic requirements of school leavers as well.

Have a 2.1. I contacted the department and they said that Irish Grads only need BBBBBB (which I have covered).

Just trying to figure out about the fees. The admissions team weren't too helpful, and SAAS are tough to get hold off (and I've been busy this week with grad research). Will get on to them again.
Cheers for getting back to me Zedd!

If anyone has applied to this without a pure science degree I'd love to hear for you.

Hey! I'm also thinking of applying for graduate entry medicine in 2014. I'm a pharmacologist, I don't know what I'm predicted for second year but I'm hoping for a 2.1 or a 1st. I managed to get A*AA in Maths, Chemistry and Biology at A-Level and I also have 6 months of healthcare experience as a theatre support worker.

I've contacted my ex-boss and have requested for a work experience placement and I've also applied for work experience placements at numerous other hospitals. I know that I've got a year left until I have to apply but I don't want to make the same mistakes that I made in 2010. Should I try to get as much work experience as I can? I don't have much voluntary experience, should I apply for some voluntary placements at a care home or hospital?

    Post Grad Question
    Hello Everyone,
I remember recently posting about applying directly to UK med schools from High School here in the US but it seems more than likely that i will have to fulfill my craving with just a study abroad.

So the question....... If i were to do undergrad here in the US, then Med School in the UK, what chances would i have at getting a position for Foundation years 1 &2 and then of course afterwards? I understand its tough to get working permits in the EU if your not an EU resident but this is assuming i graduate from an UK med School.

    Thanks

As far as I'm aware internationals can't do GEPs.

    General Graduate Entry Medicine enquiries.
Hey, I'm applying for medicine for 2013 entry, but have fairly poor GCSE's, and although I meet the entry requirements for 4/5 uni's I'm obviously aware of the fact there'll be people with a better academic portfolio than I've got. That said, I am looking at the graduate entry route just in case. Does anybody know where uni's stand on GCSE's for their 4 year courses? Do they look entirely at your degree as far as your academics go, or do previous qualifications count? I know I'm a bit premature in this when I haven't even applied for the 5 year course yet but I just want to know what other options I have in case I don't get any offers this year, instead of blindly panicking at the last minute. Any help/suggestions would be VERY greatly appreciated, thanks!

The majority don't care about academic record before A-level, and there's a fair few who don't even care about those.

The most important aspect of your application is your entrance exam result, personal statement and interview. Assuming you achieve the minimum degree requirements, of course.

Indeed to achieve a good PS & interview you should have a lot of work experience/voluntary experience/caring experience to back up your application.

I dont think SAAS will pay for anyone with a degree regardless what the actual subject is. I have done a degree in scotland and i am sure i wont be funded for a second degree. The fees roughly for glasgow/edinburgh/dundee is around £2000. I am applying for 2013 entry.

I'll be applying as a graduate albeit not to Edinburgh (I don't fulfil their highers requirement) but I'm applying to Dundee, Aberdeen, and St. Andrews.

For me the fees are £1820/year but when I looked at the Edinburgh tuition fees it apparently has the fees for EU nationals as being ~£3000 still so you probably won't be paying £9k (as you would expect) but it might not be as low as £1820.

What other uni's are you looking at?

On their website it says Scotland/EU fees are £1820.
I'm also looking into other Scottish Unis too, not too sure about applying in England as the fees are intense. Haven't made up my mind just yet.
    Cheers for the help though.

Ama2007 - are you applying to medicine in Edinburgh? Do you know any graduates that have gotten into that course. I see you are a Pharmacist - that should help. Kinda worried that Psychology won't be 'sciencey' enough.

Re: Graduates applying to Edinburgh Medicine
Some other things to bear in mind - Edinburgh take into account your school grades in a big way, even if your a graduate. I got a pre-interview rejection based on that.

Regarding SAAS, they used to provide support to graduates undertaking medical and dental degrees with a portion of their tuition fees. This was withdrawn in 2012, but in place of that the tuition fee was reduced to the 1820 which meant you were no financially worse off. It used to be £2895 before this change was made.

SAAS will not provide tuition fee funding to an EU national where that national has already received support from their home country. So if you received tuition fee support from the funding body in Ireland you wouldn't be eligible for support from SAAS with tuition fees.

If you are an EU national you would have to pay the 1820, but bear in mind that the 1820 is this year's fees (2012/13), so the universities will not tell you what their fees are for 13/14 because they won't know and this is set in conjunction with the Scottish Government for Home Scottish and EU Nationals. I wouldn't expect to be much higher than 1820 though.

How did you find the applications? Did you have much work experience?
Liking your blog, best of luck with it.

thanks very much, i did not really think of this. i only have about 1month to revise for the GAMSAT. Is that enough time?? I will look into the GAMSAT syllabus and see what I need to do.
I believe the gamsat this yr is on the 21st of sept? So that give's you almost 7 weeks which can be enough providing that you plan your time well. Even if you still feel a bit iffy about it, I would still say have a go at doing the exam UNLESS you're feeling really quite confident with the ukcat in which case I wouldn't bother sitting it and then apply wisely to ukcat unis which don't have an extra requirement of a-levels i.e kings, leicester gep (if you have or manage to get healthcare employment of somesort for atleast a yr),barts etc etc.. I just did both exams for both application cycles as I just wanted that back up incase I messed one up! But it's well worth it for the experience which will be beneficial if you need to do it again BUT hopefully that won't be needed! The chemistry that you have been learning will be useful for Sec 3 of the gamsat...and I'd also say focus on organic chem mostly followed by some phys chem stuff like gibbs free energy etc and a bit or inorganic like periodic trends etc. I hated section 1 lol...still do! I don't know how I passed that but I'm happy I did! Section2, get writing essays over and over and if possible, get someone to look over them. If essays aren't your thing (like me!) buy griffiths gamsat review and go over the way he structures his essays; I stuck to that and did ok in the end!
Buy the official acer practice books or try or find them online! I bought mine but I know they exist for free somewhere on the net lol but cannot remember where! I also found this website helpful: http://www.revisegamsat.com/about and any sciency vids on you-tube. Focus on your weaknesses first but don't get bogged down over tiny details or things you don't get; just carry on and move onto the next topic and try and re visit concepts later if you have time. Also do not ignore your strengths in the process either...or focus on your strengths entirely and ignore everything else lol...it's easily done! And don't bother with rote learning and memorising fact after fact; learn concepts and how to actually apply them to different scenarios they will throw at you. I'm sure other things have changed since I last sat the exam (sept 2011) so just check these...it wouldnt surprise me if they've now banned a calculator in Sec 3! Can't think of anything else at the moment but if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Also forgot to say, if you do decide to sit the gamsat I'd register pretty soon as the deadline will be approaching! Otherwise you have to pay an extra fee on top of 200 something pounds! Acer like drawing out as much money from you as they possibly can!

Yeah I was that there were a bunch of GEPS that accepted internationals.
Anyways does anyone have any advice on my original question above? Would really appreciate it.
