Background info/support material for Meteorology Personal Statements

I'm in a similar situation, I can't find anything to help me get started, I don't really know where to begin!

Sorry that's not much help, but I'm also in the same position!

Are you looking to do meteorology or another specialized subject?

Same! I also like the look of the Leeds meteorology course...

Just out of intrest where else will you be applying?
Because at the moment I have:
Reading,
Leeds,
UEA,
and then I'm stuck

I have had a look at Liverpool and Southampton but they don't really appeal

Same! I have nowhere else apart from Reading, Leeds and UEA. I looked at Plymouth for their Ocean Sciences course (includes modules in Met), but really didn't like it. And I was looking at Liverpool too but don't really fancy it either, so I'm stuck with 3. A bit annoying really! I'm thinking about looking at some Environmental Science courses with modules in Met that may be relevant but I don't want to go too far away from the specific Meteorology courses as otherwise my personal statement will be difficult to write with so many different courses!

Hey, last year I was looking at Meteorology courses, but then didn't get a good enough grade in maths so dropped that.

Have you both looked at the Edinburgh course of Geophysics + Meteorology or Physics+ Meteorology? (Physics+Met would be better).

Also, I'm now going to Reading to do the Master's of Environmental Science course and will be taking the meteorology/atmosphere pathway, and when I visited just over a year ago the Environmental Science course would accept applications as a 'substitute' for meteorology.

I can't really help with the PS side I'm afraid, as I applied for environmental science in the end, but I'd talk about interest in Physics and how it relates to Meteorology, maybe you have work experience to mention?

I went to the Liverpool open day and I might apply for their Oceans & Climate course but like ncg1994 said about Plymouth, its not really focused on the met... (same with Southampton)

I'm going to Edinburgh open day in September to look at the geophysics and met course Right Guard 3.D suggested but am unsure weather they will accept me if I apply. They want AAA - ABB in one sitting, however I have already re-taken a physics (and might need to re-sit another) exam so I don't know...

Did you retake from your Jan result? If yes, they wont know that.

Also, AAA is if you want to go straight into second year since with Scottish universities, English students can skip year 1 if they get the grades.

I took a look at Edinburgh online but it's just too far for me (I'm Gloucestershire and don't want to be that far away), which is a shame. But I'm so taken with Reading that I don't think I even want to go anywhere else! Which probably isn't a good way to be but oh well.

Work experience is another thing, I've done 2 placements already which are relevant but I'm struggling to think of other places to go. That's the trouble with such a specialist field!

I've done work with the Environment sector of a Power Station, which wasn't specific to Met but vaguely looked into the weather and it'll be useful for any Environmental Science courses I may apply for. And I also managed to get a placement with a weatherman at the BBC (that's the job I want when I'm older), which I'm hoping to go back to at some point as well - but I feel I need a broader range! I also applied to Met Office but they didn't accept me either. I'm a bit stuck for anywhere else. :/

What books are you reading out of interest? I haven't even started anything like that!

Wow! Shadowing a BBC weatherman must have been really cool!

I started to grasp the key knowledge and technical stuff with 'Weather for Dummies' - Its a bit dumbed down but a good place to start :P (However it is written from an American point of view so some of it is not really relevent, unless you want to move to the US of course...)

I have now moved on to a more specialist area. I have a big intrest in Clouds, the atmosphere and how big weather systems form and develop through clouds so I am reading books like 'The Cloud-Spotters Guide'. But I would advise you to just look at book reviews and things on amazon to get a vague idea.

Your meteorlogical intrests may be very different to mine so once you get an idea about your favorate area you should read up on that

I've bought Weather for Dummies also, but it is a shame it's American! Clouds interest me as well so I might try get that book too, thanks

hey, thought I'd join in here with everyone I haven't got a clue where to start with my personal statement! nor do i know what uni's to apply to!
UEA, Reading, Leeds all look great, and i would advise to look around Liverpool, i didn't think it would be any good seen as it was only BBB but i love the university and the course is recognised by the royal meteorological society. Also bham offer a masters in applied meteorology and climatology, so doing a geog degree then that is an option

what grades did everybody get for their AS's and what are they studying?

you know how you got work experience at the BBC, which studio etc? I was going to look into it you see, ive already done a day shadowing at the RAF met office and got a 5 day placement there in the autumn, i just feel like i'm stuck in a hole and there's no-one to pull me out or give me a hand through this, its such a foreign subject to everyone

I'm not looking at Edinburgh as it's just too far, (where are you from?) and like you I want a predominantly Met course as opposed to Physics/Maths etc. looks like I'm only going to apply to 3.

I'm re-visiting Reading on the 22nd for a second look around and to see the stuff I missed - so might see you around the Met department!

I'm pretty busy too, this uni stuff is stressful! I'm applying to Leeds Environmental Science course too and so am struggling to write my PS for both subjects :/
