Hi, I'm Adam. I'm 20, nearing 21. I'm going to be starting the Birkbeck CertHE in Legal Methods in September/October.

I hope to go on to do Law. Hopefully one of the following:

Favourite snack is real hard to say, I'm not a snacker. Perhaps a bar of Dairy Milk, though.

Is there a January intake for any of the Access courses? I'm turning 21 and need to figure out a way to get into uni in the UK (want to do either Classics or Law) having studied abroad the past few years.

Hey everyone,

I'm 30, I work as a professional Chef at a big, busy hotel. I'm hoping to get onto a 4 year MSci course in 2012 to study Geology/Earth Science/Geosciences. I hadn't done any science based A Levels, or any academic work until last year. Since then I've been studying with the OU, recently completing S104 Exploring Science & SXR103 Practising Science, and this coming year I plan to do a level 2 course with the OU (S276 Geology) and also redo my maths GCSE (I was uniterested & rather crap at maths at school, but I need to go back to basics to ensure I'm able to deal with the chemistry and physics involved on a Geosciences degree)

Excluding the maths GCSE, I'll have 100 credits of relevent study (nearly enough to have done the 1st year). I'm hoping that this will be enough to show my commitment, study skills, motivation and genuine interest in my chosen subject to admissions tutors.

My choices are: Imperial College, U of Manchester, Cardiff, Durham and Keele. If I get offers for both I'm torn between Imperial & Manchester.

My fave snack is; Chive & cream cheese crunchy combo mix

Same!

I absolutely hate it, I never know if I'm saying too much or not enough.

I'll have it done when I start at Birkbeck, though.

I will be (from Tuesday) studying Access to Humanities at Canterbury College, Hoping to do Literature (possibly with History) at Uni. I'll be applying to Uni of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church, Nottingham, Brighton and I'm still undecided on the last, trying to choose between a few on that one.

Just about to start work on the dreaded personal statement. Not looking forward to that one. I read in a prospectus that it's a good idea to mention that you are a mature student in your statement, anyone else heard of this? And if so, how exactly would you put it in?

Ah! another prospective Cambridge applicant. Our chances are slim, mate. But it's worth a shot, ay?

I think our personal statements are going to be crucial. Well, they always are, but especially in our cases.

Have emailed any of the colleges? I've emailed all the mature ones as well some of the others. The general feedback? Study for an A-level, too. So I am.

Actually, will you applying to a mature or standard age college?

Indeed, especially in my case so the PS will be vital in ANY application I make to university. I have poor GCSEs with plenty of Cs and a couple Bs from a state school in East London. I've now matured exponentially and feel my GCSEs are not a good current reflection of me, only my past achievements with far too many distractions.

I've been emailing Hughes Hall. Largely because TomU on this forum is going there to do law (as I hope to) this year having done an access course so with that I'm reliant on there lenience with GCSEs and acceptable courses. I know the Birkbeck Legal Methods course I'm doing is highly reputable, people have previously got into Oxbridge and many of top universities with it.

Hughes Hall didn't mention doing an extra A level at all. However, if I receive no decent offers for law this year I will consider taking a year to work and study for an extra A level and apply again.

Have you started the PS?

What are you going to be studying?

What college do you think you'll apply to?

I hope to have mine done and dusted in 2 weeks from now.
Hi, I'm 28 and just finished doing maths and english GCSE'S I could only get a top grade of a C in maths which annoyed me as in all the exams I got full marks and I got a B in english. I start full time Access course in a couple of weeks- studying Maths, Psychology, ICT and Science. I was going to go down the teaching route at Uni but now I would love to do a maths degree...AM I MAD? All the talk of starting a personal statement is scaring me now!! I would love to go to UWE as i get a good vibe from reading the prospectus.
Oh yeah and my favourite snack is Starbar!

Yeah, I, too, have poor GCSEs, but I believe I have a valid reason as to why they are so poor: my father died during revision, so I missed months of school and had a complete brain wipe. (I'm not whether I should mention this in my PS or not as I want to concentrate fully on the future and my passion for the subject I wish to study, not detail a family bereavement. Inevitably, though, I think I'll have to.) I no longer feel they represent my academic aptitude, either. If anyone saw my GCSEs without any background information, they'd think I was, well, to put it bluntly, thick which, without sounding conceited, I'm not.

If Birkbeck has a reputation for sending its Access students to Oxbridge, then that can only bode well for you, my friend, in terms of experience and support, etc.

I know what I'm going to discuss in my PS, but it's articulating it which is the tricky part. A question about applications, actually. Because you and I are applying to Cambridge, we'll have to send our applications before October 15th. But does that mean it's also sent to our other choices at the same time?

TomU's a legend!

Well, I hope to study for an English Literature degree. I keep having this awful premonition that, if my PS isn't up to scratch, I'll get rejected by all my choices; thus relegating me to a dreaded gap year. Gotta think positive, though, I guess.

See, this is where I'm having trouble. As I'm only 22 (I'll be 23 once or if I get into uni), I'm worried if I apply to a mature college, I won't feel comfortable among older students. But then, I think possibly a mature environment would be more condusive to rigorous study. Conversely, I may find that I'm able to socialise better with students who are only a few years younger than myself, but may be turned off by the party culture. It's all really prejudice of me, I know. I'll just say this: If I apply to a mature college, I think it'll be St. Edmunds; and if I apply to a standard age college, it'll be Peterhouse. (By the way, I emailed corpus and their reply was really snooty. Won't be considering them, then.)

When do you start your course, out of interest? I begin on the 12th.

Hi both,

I've just been through the whole application process as a mature student (23) for English Lit. I applied to King's College London, Sheffield, Leicester, Queen Mary University London, and UWE. If you have any questions about the process then I'm happy to help if I can

I completely sympathise with the dreaded PS. I spent three months on mine and remember bursting into tears in frustration a few times. I can find my final version if it's of any use to you. I got interest from all the unis I applied to

Hello, i am 21 and I did an Access To HE Diploma-Law and got 51 credits at Distinctions with the remainder 9 credits at Merits. I applied to LSE,Warwick,Queen Mary,Kent and Buckingham. Never got into neither...Warwick showed an interest but my tutor wrote a bad prediction grade..if only he had faith in me :frown: ...anyway i went through Clearing and got offered a place at Leicester...not happy with it but it is a top 15 uni so i shall go there for a year and then seek for transfer to Queen Mary *finger crossed*

There's an additional, later deadline for Access students applying to Cambridge's mature colleges.

"The standard deadline for applications to be received is 15 October 2011.

However, the mature Colleges (see information below), will consider applications from mature and affiliated applicants submitted after this date, as part of a second application round, the deadline for which is 1 March 2012. Hughes Hall, Lucy Cavendish and St Edmund’s Colleges (but not Wolfson) may also consider applications after this date if places are still available."

Once you send your UCAS application through it's sent to all colleges you've listed. If you haven't decided on all 5 universities by the time you have to send your application then you can add more choices later.

"If you originally applied to fewer than five choices, you can add more choices as long as you have not accepted or declined your offers. You can add any further choices until 30 June. You can add new courses in Track."

Your not mad. I quit politics last year and now I'm going to apply for environmental science lol. If you love maths then it will be great. Don't be scared of the personal statement. If you go onto the UCAS website they give you guides on how to write it. The earlier you start it the better.
