Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012(Original post by _N_)
I was just wondering, are uni's told our Access grades when they're finalised in the same way that A Level students' are?
I'm also going to be going on to do BSc Geography, and, I too, feel like this isn't the sort of course that many mature students go on to do, either.
So it's nice to know someone else is going for it. However, I'm (hopefully) going to be going to Exeter.
Excellent, a fellow Geographer! I figure the lack of mature students going for it is do to it not being a qualification for a specific profession, but the knowledge and skills and hands-on experience it covers means it could lead to all sorts of really worthwhile and relevant employment directions, wherever we take it, so it seems like a good choice
A colleague of mine did Geography at Exeter. Probably about 20 years ago, but he loved it and I get the impression that's a well respected university and course too.
About the unis knowing our grades, I remember UCAS saying something about, if our qualification was one of the ones they listed they would let our universities know our results, but I'm not sure if we need to send them to UCAS or they automatically get them, I'll find out... -
Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012If you look at the UCAS stats the number of mature students starting non vocational degree courses is very low. 305 for natural sciences for example, compared to 2500 for social sciences and 2500 for aligned to health care. The vast vast majority start vocational degree courses.(Original post by greengloves)

My wife starts a BSc in Environmental Science in September and I suspect will be one of very few, and maybe the only mature student on the course. -
Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012by eck, i'm sorry for the late reply! had an assignment to power thru so i stayed off here!(Original post by Soule)
This whole course has gone so quick, will really miss it. I can't believe how much work I have now and has to be done by 1st June so its marked in time fr end of course. I suspect I am a little too old for halls at 38, but going to Surrey to study private let on my own would be expensive, so I will either revert to my teenage years again, or turn into an old lady!
Congrats to you too on your social work offer, hard course to get into, I have a couple of friends still waiting to hear.
Freshers week, lol, I keep thinking which societies to join, reckon I won't have time to actually study if I join all the ones I want to!
i'm 42 and i'll tell u now, i'm abs gobsmacked at your balls. i really am! looool....the idea of staying in halls and being looked upon as the oldun on the block would fill me with dread! mainly cos i'm more childish than many half my age loool
feedback when the time comes as to whether u made the correct decision tho? i'd be interested.
as for me, even tho i'm going far norf (glasgow) i'm just gonna get a room. am aiming for the right balance of nice area/flat mate age corresponding to mine and cheapness. so far, i'm pls'd to see that the places to share ARE out there for the older ones.
ty regards the offer as well
i must admit, it was a looong and nerve-wracking wait and i'm pls'd to be in the place i'm in. you will know from your friends just how tuff it is to get onto this course, so yeah, am mega chuffed over here and i wish your friends the very best of luck, if they haven't heard as of yet.
the hardest part of this degree has been the waiting on decisions bit! *is impatient*
i have a list in ma head of all the socs i want
film. books. social work. walking/rambling and when i'm feelin fitter, some form of martial arts again. yannow? in tapping all that out i just realised, you're right! i aint gonna have much time to study if i do all those loool
now i just gotta get these blasted SFE papers off
or i go nowhere!

Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012Hey, I'm also starting Sussex in September! MSc in psychology. Haven't actually been down there yet, but sounds great. What's the campus like?(Original post by greengloves)
Hello everyone
New member, second ever post. Congrats everyone on your decisions to go back to education and all offers received/accepted.
Is anybody starting at Sussex for September 2012? I have just firm accepted a conditional offer from them and hope I've made the right choice, I feel a bit uncertain but that's probably just a doubting mind, I expect it will turn out to be the right way to go. Insurance choice Royal Holloway. I'm currently on an Access course doing Biology and Chemistry. One of the best things I've ever done, got so much out of this year and feel more confident.
I'm 25, not old as mature students go, but my course (Geography BSc) is not one many older people apply for like health care qualifications, so I felt a bit out of place on admissions day!

Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012
Hello, I am applying to study business management at wolves uni.
I am trying to put together my statement, does anyone have any idea how I could work my child and own home into it to show responsibility and maturity??
Found it easy to write about the course and why I want to do it but talking about myself I suck!
Also fav snack would be wotsits- bags and bags,...
Thanks -
Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012Hello and good luck with your application. When I was writing my personal statement I wanted to include the fact I had kids. The way I did it was along the lines of " I make the most of my spare time by doing ..........with my children. Therefore my time management skills are excellent as I can spend quality time with my children as well as working/studying/homelife etc." You don't need to put much in but the time management bit is worthwhile putting in your statement.(Original post by Laurren21)

You only need to touch on it it does not need to be a major component. -
Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012
That's what I thought.
It's just so difficult trying to second guess what someone I do not know may or may not be interested in knowing what really isn't very relevant to the course!!
I will try drafting along those lines!
Thank you both for the quick responses!

Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012
I am 26 and I got two conditional offers from the University of Plymouth and from LJMU (havent finished my BSc yet).
I want to study International Logistics. I cant really make my mind up yet... :-/ Liverpool is appealing, because it is a bigger city and it actually has airports closer by (I am from Germany). But I think Plymouth is higher ranked?! ... -
Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012
I am 24 and will be studying Japanese Studies at Sheffield starting this year. I am finishing an Access Course in the next month or two to facilitate it. I had applied to Manchester, Leeds and SOAS too, SOAS I stopped looking at for money's sake, and of the other 3, which I went to open days for all of them, Sheffield blew the others away in terms of selling the course on its merits, so the choice was clear!
Im happy that there was a large variety of ages in the access course I attended, and almost all of them got the places they wanted at the universities they wanted. -

I am doing psychology, but yes going to RHUL. Really can't wait. Will you be stay in halls? -
Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012Oh thank god! Completely irrational but I keep panicking that there's going to be very few matures and that I'm going to stand out like a sore thumb!!(Original post by Soule)
Me Me Me!

I'm going to have to stay in Halls, it's too far away from my parents house to commute everyday. How about you? -
Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012I am in halls too. Reid is my first choice. I live a 2 hour drive away so can't commute. Really looking forward to it, but I agree I am a little bit nervous about it as well. As far as I know they do have a few mature students kicking about but we will be in the minority. I think I will keep quiet that I will be celebrating my 40th when I am there!(Original post by Magic8BallKR)

Re: Mature Students Applying for University 2012
Hey all, im 22 guna be 23 when the degree starts in sept, initially i was rejected on all 5 course choices but ive re-applied for a joint business and english language degree (through extra) at kingston uni (fingers crossed this time)!! im also looking at private accom to rent in the surrounding area (i understand its pretty expensive but i've got a job lined up as a teaching assistant in sept £23-25k per annum at a special school) so my question is really : anybody in the same boat as me? would be good to maybe build connections if your also heading to kingston as a mature student or looking to rent privately in the area (house parties are guna be a sure thing @ my place!) get in touch if so, good luck with all your applications also, the waiting game is driving me crazy and it seems their actually taking longer with my app this time than 1st time round...
So it's nice to know someone else is going for it. However, I'm (hopefully) going to be going to Exeter.
