what was your first day at uni like?
Discussion for current and prospective students about social life at university, societies, what stationery and bedroom items to buy and anything else relating to life as a university student.

Re: what was your first day at uni like?
I'm slightly apprehensive that, if I end up at my insurance, I will just end up ranting to my newly met flatmates about my firm not accepting me.
So excited though, literally cannot wait; gonna be an a blast. Some very comforting posts, at the moment I'm convinced I'll have no problems making friends but I'm sure that will change once I see that first signpost. -
Re: what was your first day at uni like?first uni was oxford...a place i thought i would find like minded people, but it was not to be...full of drunkeds....like every other british university!(Original post by lluke_1992)
I think it depends what uni you go to. Where did you go first time? And true it was very studenty but I guess a good ice-breaker.
Theres socieites for many things so I wouldnt classify all introvert people wont like uni. In fact, alot of introvert people strive at uni as its a new place with new people. -
Re: what was your first day at uni like?
Didn't get much sleep the night before - mix of excitement and anxiety. Fairly nervous turning up to halls on the first day, but I eventually settled in after the customary awkward conversations were over... and after bottles were opened. There are no problems that alcohol cannot solve.
First lecture was OK I suppose, the usual welcome crapola.
Remember to make a good first impression. Be relaxed, be yourself in moderation (don't be too crazy), and when things loosen up and become more comfortable, take it from there.
PS. Second time doing this -

How many people do you think tend to arrive alone? That's what I'll be doing as for some stubborn reason my dad refuses to drive me even though it's only 80 miles (could be a lot worse), and my mom says she's not travelling back home alone. So I guess it'll just be me and whatever I can cram into my suitcase.
Travelling alone as well....still wondering how many suitcases i would be carrying along. -
Re: what was your first day at uni like?hey, good to know that there are more czechs in here(Original post by Subclique)
I'm quite looking forward to the first day at uni. Love meeting new people and hopefully can find more weirdos like me.
Hey, I'm Czech too (lived in England though for last 7 years) and going to university in September. Which uni do you go if you don't mind me asking? I'm hopefully going University of Manchester.
im starting my second year at University of Kent, doing international business

Re: what was your first day at uni like?
First day in accommodation was weird at first, got dropped off by the rents around midday and to my dismay, nobody was in and no one showed up for another 2 hours so it was creepy being by myself in an empty new flat!
Five other people eventually turned up including one of my college friends (which was quite a coincidence). Went out and got wasted with 2 of them, whilst one of them was on antibiotics and didn't want to head out, another decided he wanted to hang out with his home friends and the other decided to go and eat out with his family! We obviously weren't THE party flat :P -
Re: what was your first day at uni like? What uni's that?(Original post by 2ndClass)
Erm found out that 2/3 of the class went to private school and sounded like Joanna Lumley in the Privileged Car Insurance advert.
awkward.

Re: what was your first day at uni like?I'm only taking two, as far as I know - one massive one and a carry on suitcase, along with my massive handbag. Lord knows how I'll fit all my stuff though, a lot of it will just be bought once I get there. I considered buying some of those vacuum bags to pack more in, but I don't quite trust them.(Original post by jayhamz)

Re: what was your first day at uni like?
Well i was nervous then i spoke to a girl in july on TSR who was doing the same course at same uni, and she lived near me
so on freshers day i walked with her and her friend who she shared a house with. So made me feel less nervous, cause i didnt want to walk alone to freshers cause my friends from school had their induction at different times so was happy i met someone, cause i suck at making friends lol. Dont worry about it everyones in the same position just be friendly and get involved you'll be fine.

Re: what was your first day at uni like? That's so sad(Original post by i.am.lost)
My doorknob broke off and I had to spend the night waiting for the porters to come and fix it while everyone else went to party

For some reason, it reminded me of Hemingway's short story − "For sale: baby shoes, never worn."
It makes me angry at myself for not being there to cheer you up, even though I don't go to your University, or any University for that matter... And have never met you before in my life.
Why wasn't I there

Re: what was your first day at uni like?
Moved in > got best cupboards > met housemates > identified which ones were up for getting rat-arsed that night > went on a treck to Dominos > invited friends over > got rat-arsed > played I've Never (aka. got more rat-arsed) > passed out somewhere.
It was a fantastic bonding experience.
EDIT: somewhere in it, we also came up with nicknames for each other - including one boy who wasn't actually there that night. A year later the nicknames are still fully in place
