Things to do before/during moving in?
I'm starting here in October and I was just wondering what kinds of things I'll need to do? I have no clue and I want to make sure I get everything done right D:

    Pack? :P

Seriously, make sure you bring ID with you.
Get your purple card in advance (student card for lancaster) so you avoid queues.
Pay your college membership fee (when you get confirmation of your accommodation later this month or next)

Apart from that, not much! Have fun, and enjoy summer!

Do your inventory form before you move everything in out the car.

    Saves a lot of hassle.

Oh and take something heavy to wedge the doors open to the flats when youre first moving in on the day. Everyone wil appreciate it, and yes, youre not supposed to do it but everyone doesnt care on those days.
If not, use a fire extinguisher...its what our flat does...

When moving in, complete the inventory provided. Before you've brought your things in if you can. That way you can see everything and check for marks, faults etc without falling over your stuff. You can always keep hold of the inventory for an extra day or so and then you can add anything else if you find it once you've unpacked. Lancaster charge stupid figures when it comes to the end of the year, but if you complete your inventory as throughly as you can, you can usually avoid too many unnecessary deductions from your deposit.

Before you get to Lancaster, I'd also say to sort out your purple card. I had mine posted to me before I left home, which was much easier.

Erm, I'd also recommend sorting out a few things to make your room feel your own. Photographs, cushions or posters etc. Just to stop your room feeling like a box. I was surprised at the end of this year when I took down all my ornaments, posters and photographs - it made such a big difference to the feel of the room.

Is this the right page to buy a card?
    http://card.lusu.co.uk/

Can a purple card be used for places that ask for NUS or will we need an NUS card too?

Most shops accept the purple card as student ID. I've never had any problems using it in places like ShoeZone, Peacocks, Cineworld etc across the country. It does have an NUS logo on the card.

However, if the shop has a policy only to accept NUS Extra cards [the ones that cost around £10 a year], then they probably will not accept it. Ditto shops online like Amazon, Play etc only offer the discount with the extra card.

I had an NUS Extra card in first year but didn't bother again. I didn't save enough with it to make it worth the extra.

    Thanks for the info!
I'll probably get both. The LUSU site seems a bit broken sort of don't want to use it...

Everyone's pretty much said everything really. Pack everything, make sure you have all your I.D things ready, get your purple card early and unless you imagine going Sugarhouse (student union club in the town center) often you don't really need to get the Sugarhouse card. A door stop is really handy especially in the first couple of weeks since you meet people alot more easily.

A 10m ethernet cable is really handy since you can use it to go on the internet from the comfort of your bed since the one the university give you is pretty short. Can also use it to bring your laptop to the kitchen and people can youtube what ever songs they wants, handy when pre drinking haha. Stuff to make your room more homely like photographs, posters etc. It's pretty handy bringing a printer but not essential.

Some cheap speakers from argos for like £19.99 are good for pre-drinks as laptop speakers tend to be pretty quiet. A bottle opener is also a great one and a door wedge. Ebay an ethernet cable as suggested above as they are dirt cheap.

Regarding purple cards - if the website still isn't working for you by October you can come and get one in person (we will be in the learning zone) so no need to fear

    ps. we are nice
