Re: Barts and The London Applicants 2012
Hey everyone,
place is alot quieter these days! :P
Just wondering for those students already in uni, how much should I be anticipating to spend on rent?
I have applied for halls for this year but just wondering what the usual rent people pay for subsequent years, and how far do people tend to be living from whitechapel? -

Rent is around there each week for something not great. As for how far you want to live from Whitechapel? Personally, as far away as possible. -
Re: Barts and The London Applicants 2012Almost everyone I know in my year is paying 110-125 a week really, with most towards the end of the spectrum.(Original post by digitalis)

I'm one of the exceptions in that I'm paying about 105 a week but it's a **** hole and I'm miles out (Near All saints DLR) -
Re: Barts and The London Applicants 2012I will agree that cheap in Mile End definitely means ****. If it's cheaper than everything else, there is a reason. Usually a mouse or damp or windows that won't close or a gas leak or landlords who are *****.(Original post by RollerBall)

I will agree that cheap in Mile End definitely means ****. If it's cheaper than everything else, there is a reason. Usually a mouse or damp or windows that won't close or a gas leak or landlords who are *****.
- Landlord is ****
- Most of the windows don't close properly
- Loads of heat leakage
- We have mice
- No garden of any sort/Door off a dodgy main road
- Cracks in every wall and the floor is sinking in most rooms
- Most of the light fixtures don't work
- It's miles away from everywhere (poplar)
- Our heating is done so slapdash that we have two boilers and two gas/electrcity bills
- Our landlord is a ****
- It took us three months to get a cooker when ours broke

Hi all, I've created a poll to see where Barts Medics are applying to for accommodation.

Re: Barts and The London Applicants 2012Good God. This brings back awful memories of second year, I sympathise greatly. I lived in a damp ex council flat in a dodgy area of Bow, hellish year.(Original post by RollerBall)

Thank **** I am leaving the East End, forever. I'm so serious. -
Re: Barts and The London Applicants 2012Yeah, where did you live in fourth year? I know in third year you were a steward obviously and then back in Dawson in fifth year.(Original post by digitalis)

Re: Barts and The London Applicants 2012No, I lived in Mile End in third year, stewarded in fourth year and was an outfirms vagrant in fifth year.(Original post by RollerBall)

Re: Barts and The London Applicants 2012The vast majority of BL students tend to live in Whitechapel, Stepney Green, Mile End, Bethnal Green and Bow after Year 1. Limehouse, Wapping and Shoreditch are also pretty common places people choose to live in. Others also choose to go further east into Stratford area. Those who can afford to, live in Liverpool St area or Rotherhithe (which are both really lovely areas and not too far from the Whitechapel Campus).(Original post by aidanwryan01)
where do people tend to end up in years 2-5? and whats the usual commute like? I'm hoping to get into dawson! when will we find out if we get in?
These are all in the east(ish) end of London so the commute isn't too bad - the London Overground also makes it much easier to get around. -
Re: Barts and The London Applicants 2012Yep, there are a few intro lectures which are mainly to do with information about the course (introduction to the first module - FunMed - and to PBL and SSCs (Student Selected Components, elements of the course you can choose the subject matter for)).(Original post by 301lw)
so what do barts student do in their first week?
i've heard that there are some lectures?
They're not really that important, but it's nice to go to them to get to know other freshers, and to get a bit of information on what to expect for the coming year.
The most important stuff is the freshers events though really. You'll have a great freshers fortnight lined up for you, including Mummies and Daddies and a good few themed parties in the GriffInn (the BLSA union). There's something on every night during freshers fortnight.
My first few weeks at Barts were awesome, and I have no reason to doubt yours will be any different.
