Re: MSc in Computer ScienceWe have made about 85 offers for the full-time MSc in Computer Science this year, and expect around 45-50 to take up a place on the course.(Original post by Sunflower530)
Anyone plan to take MSc Computer Science @ Oxford this year?
Do you know how many students they've taken this year?
I've heard normally the class size is around 70, but seems this year a lot more students have been admitted...

Re: MSc in Computer ScienceJust out curiosity, do you have the number of how many people applied for Computer Science at Oxford?(Original post by Oxford Computer Science Dept)

Ahh already?!?! I don't even know what I am doing my final year project (equiv. to dissertation) on yet! Maybe a year out of education and apply for 2014 entry would be best...

Re: The Oxford Postgraduate ThreadDon't worry just yet. Generally you need to apply by January for funding deadlines, so you do still have some time. Something that's worth looking into over the summer, really.(Original post by sugar-plum-fairy)

Not sure if it is possible to start our project in the corse earlier? I plan to peruse a PhD, so will be good if I can make something valuable in from the project, possibly by devoting more time into it.(Original post by Oxford Computer Science Dept)

Re: The Oxford Postgraduate Thread
Sorry if I'm in the wrong place to ask this, but I haven't posted on TSR in about two years!
I'm just about to graduate with First-Class Honours in History from the University of Bristol, and really want to apply for either the MSt or MPhil in Modern British and European History (to start in 2013).
What are my chances of getting into Oxford? Has anyone else applied/is thinking of applying that could give me some advice?
Thanks

Re: The Oxford Postgraduate ThreadI'm not especially qualified to give advice* but since no one else has replied:(Original post by kevinteacosy)

Congratulations on the first: it will definitely tick a box. I'd suggest when writing your statement and selecting your written work you keep in mind that the faculty will get lots of applications from clever people, and will be really looking out for applications from clever people who want to do work which fits the available resources (in terms of specific modules, supervisors, faculty strengths, archives, what-have-you). Unlike quite a lot of departments, it looks to me like History provide quite a detailed description of what they're looking for on their website, so in some ways you're lucky.
Don't get too hung up on whether you'll actually do the courses and research you propose: it's not a DPhil application and I suspect they're more interested in seeing you spin up a credible-sounding research idea, regardless of what comes of it. I'm in a different discipline so I don't know how useful my experience is, but I junked my original dissertation proposal a month into my MSt, and wound up doing pretty much none of the things I said I was interested in in my MSt application statement -- though I did retain the methodological focus I'd suggested. No eyebrows were raised at this.
Unless the faculty explicitly forbids it (I haven't checked) I'd encourage you to contact one a course convener or admissions person for advice if you feel you need it.
At the end of the day the only proper way to find out what your chances are is to apply, which I would strongly encourage you to do if you think the specific resources and course content and structure at Oxford suit you. I don't think it's a good idea to apply 'because it's Oxford'.
* I've successfully applied twice (once for an MSt, once for a DPhil) but in English, not history. Still the humanities, I suppose. -
Re: The Oxford Postgraduate Thread
I am wishing to apply for Oxford's Dphil Education/ Cambridge PhD Education, currently doing my MA at Institute of Education, University of London. I have found a same research interest possible supervisor. However, have not found one for Cambridge, should I just apply for Oxford?

Re: The Oxford Postgraduate Threadwhy not? u can apply to Oxford first while continuing your search in Cambridge. There's no restrictions for graduate applications to Oxbridge any way,(Original post by ProvostToBe)

Re: The Oxford Postgraduate Thread
Hi, does anyone have any advice about colleges for postgraduates? I missed out on halls in my undergraduate course in University of Bristol, and after three years of living in a variety of grotty flats with no one around, I'd really love to live in a particularly oldie-worldy college of Oxford. A chapel is also important for me.
However, having browsed their websites, a lot of the colleges put their postgrads in flats or other buildings far away from their main complex, or only have a low percentage of grads being offered accommodation.
Also concerned if I put a popular college down, it's more likely I'll be put somewhere else and end up in a block of flats after all.
Any ideas on what I should do?Last edited by Plumeus; 09-09-2012 at 01:04.
