Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders Thread
Yeesh, I'm getting a bit lost with all the Oxford threads!
I'll be heading up to Oxford for an MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management at Brasenose College. Is anyone else going to be calling BNC home?
Congratulations everyone! I can't wait to jump on a plane and head over! -
Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders ThreadAh, that makes sense. It's inspiring to see a husband supporting his wife in her wish to undertake a competitive postgraduate degree abroad. It pleases the feminist in me(Original post by tem11)
I should mention that my husband is British and we'll be staying with his family for a few months while he searches for a job. We figure the sooner we get to the UK, the sooner he can find a job and we can get situated. We don't plan to move into our own place in Oxford until the end of September. I applied for university accommodation as well as college accommodation so hopefully we have a few places to choose from. I'm not sure when we're able to take up college accommodation, I think it depends on availability.
Didn't mean to scare all of you
.
I'm waiting with applying for accommodation until I have heard back from a college. I can't wait to hear where I've been accepted, to delve into that respective college's history and facilities and to prepare the grand move. -

Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders Thread
I was accepted into Oxford as well. St. Anthony's college was my first choice, but I didn't hear back from the college yet... When I got the Cambridge offer, I got the college acceptance like a day after (Jesus College). However, I prefer the Oxford program so I might go to Oxford. I'm really hoping I can go to St Anthony's if I end up at Oxford.
Also got my first scholarship guaranteed, this will cover at least a bit of my expenses (external scholarship, I'm from the Netherlands).
Still waiting on decisions from 2 other universities I applied to....Last edited by oxonian_wannabe; 31-03-2010 at 14:32. -
Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders ThreadAnother Dutchie! Out of curiosity, what Dutch scholarship did you secure? Are you awaiting the outcome of the Huygens programme as well? What uni are you coming from and what degree did you apply for?(Original post by oxonian_wannabe)

Heh, seems I switched into an interrogative mode. -
Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders Thread
I got the VSB beurs (max €10,000).
I also applied to Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and HSP.
If I get the HSP, I might go to the USA though. I also got an acceptance from NYU and am waiting on Columbia (my top choice...). Not completely sure if I'll go to NYU or Oxford if I have to chose between those two.
I'm also waiting for a decision from the U of T. They wrote me an email that I'm considered for their funding as well. So I can imagine I go there if they offer me good funding and I only get a VSB beurs.
Did you have a VSB interview as well?Last edited by oxonian_wannabe; 31-03-2010 at 14:53. -

Nope, I was not eligible for the VSB fund because I am no longer enrolled at a Dutch university (I finished my Bachelor's degree already and am doing an Erasmus Mundus Master at the moment). I am also not eligible for the PBCF, so I have my hopes set on the HSP.
What do you want to study?Last edited by CooCooCachoo; 31-03-2010 at 15:07. -
Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders Thread
Why is that? I'm no longer enrolled either, I finished my studies in august 2009. If you come from a university, you need to hold or expect a masters degree, but I don't think you need to be enrolled in a Dutch University. At least, I'm not enrolled either and that was no problem. But I did apply through the Dutch university I did my undergrad at.
HSP is the best scholarship. It will cover most of the expenses. HSP is my only option if I want to go to the States. Of course I take a loan and pay off my debts the rest of my life, but I'm not going to if I can also go to Oxford!
Why didn't you apply to Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds? They will also give money to non-cultural studies! Well, you have one day left to apply if you decide to.... I guess that will be difficult from wherever you live now.
Where and what are you studying now?Last edited by oxonian_wannabe; 27-04-2010 at 08:42. -
Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders ThreadWhen I read the selection criteria it clearly stated that you had to be enrolled at a Dutch university. Perhaps they are less strict in practice, but it did withhold me from applying in the first place. Oh well. As for the PBCF, it states that you need to have finished your Master's degree already, and I am still in the midst of doing so.(Original post by oxonian_wannabe)

I'm in post-Soviet/Russian studies.

Clearly HSP is the best fund. Frankly, and without wanting to sound arrogant, I think I stand a good chance of securing it, based simply upon the fact that several of my peers with similar or less distinctive profiles were awarded grants in the past. (Knock on wood). But time will tell, obviously.
Interesting field
I am doing an Erasmus Mundus in Global Studies, for which I will do my final semester in Vienna. I've been doing an internship at the European Parliament for the last four months though.
I also applied to Cambridge, for which I received an offer as well. Oxford is my top choice though, especially now that Cambridge cancelled the two-year programme that I was admitted to and offered me entry into the one-year track in International Relations instead. If I don't get funding, I am still considering taking out a loan, but I hope not to have to make such a decision. Are you by the way definitely going to Oxford or are you also waiting for other universities or do you also have other offers?
I did consider applying for other universities, but it has been a dream of mine to attend Oxbridge. Plus it would sound rather silly to study European politics across the pond, irrespective of how good US programmes might be. -
Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders Thread
I hope you'll get the HSP fund! Otherwise, you might be able to apply to some funds for your second year of study at Oxford?
I was also accepted into Cambridge, but this is also a 1-year track and I prefer 2-years. I would definitely take out a loan though if I have to, but just keep it to the minimum.
Yale has some good EU politics programs, but I see your point.
Are you planning to do a PhD as well? I'm not really planning on this, but you never know in the future.Last edited by oxonian_wannabe; 27-04-2010 at 08:44. -
Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders ThreadThanks for the info!(Original post by brewski)
For those of you in Politics and IR who have been waiting for paper copies of your offers: the department told me today that they'll be communicating only by email. So no paper copies are on the way.
So I assume that the next letter we will be getting is from our college! -
Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders ThreadIt sounds odd that that person was rejected. I will have to cross my fingers and hope the same fate does not await me (or you(Original post by oxonian_wannabe)

I have no clue what my chances are at HSP. S/o I know with pretty high grades didn't get it last year, although this person already had an Oxford acceptance and had some great extracurriculars and a 9 average in Dutch grades. We'll see. I don't have a 9 average (an 8.5 and 8), but I think I did do some interesting things: two studies at the same time (exact sciences and languages), studied abroad 4 times, got some scholarships for that, conference presentations etc. I guess it depends on how they like my story and future plans... I heard the most important is your usefulness to the Netherlands (makes sense, since the Netherlands will be paying) and I guess my motivation letter covers that. It is also a bit of luck! I wish HSP had interviews like VSB. I'm sure that interview was the reason they gave me the scholarship. It is nice to get a chance to present yourself..

).
I am not too sure yet if I want to continue on with a PhD/DPhil. The way the Oxford degree is designed certainly leaves a lot of room for that, turning it into a 2+2. But whether I want to do that depends entirely on how I feel after a year. Seven years of studying might just suffice for a while

Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders Thread
I might just be paranoid but I am truly starting to fear that there was some misunderstanding as to my acceptance... All I know is that I emailed them on the 22nd and got a single line in reply saying that I was accepted, but it wasn't from the person I had emailed in the first place. I don't even know if the offer is conditional, let alone anything about funding. The director of Graduate studies was supposed to write to me on Monday - presumably about a transcripts-related question I asked him a while ago - but never did. I don't want to pester them, but perhaps I should make sure that there was no mistake?
Anyone else without a "firm" offer, so to speak? -
Re: The Oxford Graduate Offer Holders ThreadDon't worry! First, you are not alone in this fear, and second, as scary as it is, I find it highly, highly unlikely that we should be too concerned. I was emailed on the 22nd (rather unprompted), and the secretary said my conditions letter would be mailed out a few days later. It isn't here yet, but I am trying not to stress too much because I know it takes a little while for letters to travel overseas. But gosh, part of me is convinced she looked up the wrong application before sending me the email!(Original post by Sooz2471)

I just try to remember that Oxford knows that its positions are coveted*, and that its employees know that they could cause extreme heartache (not to mention potential lawsuits from nutcases) if they were careless enough to send out wrong decisions. It'll be okay!
*I have always heard universities and related institutions referred to in the singular ('Oxford does X' rather than 'Oxford do X'), but generally this was from American English speakers. Does this seem horribly wrong to those of you who speak British English?
Am not even sure if I'm making sense anymore... brain is leaking out my ears thanks to my dissertation.Last edited by Seasons; 31-03-2010 at 20:55. -
