It wouldn't contradict any UK laws. I don't think you seem to understand that divorce is a civil matters, and civil matters can always be settled outside a recognised court as long as both parties consent. If even one party refuses to settle outside a British court, then the default is a case in an ordinary British court.

Those two cases you outlined certainly wouldn't have happened in ordinary British courts, but the Sharia court operated with no real authority, because both parties willingly went through it.

I agree it's stupid, but it's not illegal, and honestly if two people want to subject themselves to ideas from the middle-ages then I say let them, it's just Darwinism in action.

How would you know who the father of the child is, if say you live in a poverty-stricken deprived area of Africa where it's next to impossible to find out who the father of the child is?
If you live in a poverty-stricken deprived area of Africa, breeding more kids to suffer in such environment is just pure evillll! I'm an internet warrior for world peace and harmony my friend. I strongly believe in Humanity, girls deserve the same as guys! Yay for equality!

do shia worship allah , the muslim god ? i think you will find the answer is yes - therefore muslim
Do you know who are Shia? Don't pretend that you are smart by asking this dum question.

Shia don't follow prophet Muhammad PBUH, and some of them worship a person, who is Ali (May God be pleased with him) and these live in Syria, and Bashar AlAsad is an example of these, even they don't exceed 1 million in number, but they call themselves Muslims.

Shia do sometimes have many things against God/Allah/Yahweh/ Elohim.

We are the Muslims! and we decide who is a muslim and who is not. Not you!

And please show me any proof from Quran or from Hadiths (Bukari or Muslim) that says that Taqiyaa is allowed. So don't get into these things, you are not a Muslim and you can't decide in these things nor discuss them. We don't consider Shia as being Muslims, and that's it, whether you want to accept or deny.

I don't know why do you put your nose in everything about Muslims????

    Leave us alone.

a quote from the archbishop of canterbury:

"Dr Williams argues that adopting parts of Islamic Sharia law would help maintain social cohesion."

Typical religious nut job that guy is. Don't know why people in the UK value religious leaders so highly when the influence they actually have is becoming non existant. A peasant in the street could say what he wants doesn't mean we have to listen or that he is right.

So who do you suggest we listen to during a religious debate?

If they're being intimidated, then it should be treated no different intimidation in any other court case and she should file a complaint with the police. The law enforcement in this country can only do so much, they can't read our minds and detect for us when we need help.

Its not a religious debate its about implementing a religion based law in the UK. Last time I checked you didn't have to be religious to vote.

I was talking in general. In regards to this particular thread, the best method of attaining knowledge of the religion your dealing with would be from its religious leaders.

NO! This is England; we do not want to be forced by these extremists to establish their law in OUR country, they should go back abroad if they want to live under their own rules and regulations.

This is actually what the EDL guy was referring to when he mentioned "muslamic law" so he does have a point when you think about it.

No its not. Stop avoiding the question. If he quoted a muslim shaykh instead. It would still be a religious leader.

Yes but it doesn't mean they're not allowed kids. May be it's not a great idea to have lots of kids but yes they do have the right to have at least a few children. If they didn't have kids the population would die out.

So am I bud, I'm a complete humanitarian and all for putting other people first and making this a world a happy place free of conflict. Islam is all for equality no matter what people that believe otherwise say. Men and women are equal in that one is not better than the other. But they are different in the sense that they have different roles and responsibilities. For example, a man should, and is the first in line to provide for his family however a woman does not have to spend her money on her family. The woman isn't better, she just has a different responsibility! It's vital we have different roles and responsibilities in society but not necessarily be better than one another. Poor analogy but take for example I'm on a flight to Australia. The only people allowed out of their seats when the plane takes off are the air hostesses. It's not because they're better but they have a different role to play in society! haha

Yes, it's easy to file the case, but it can be extremely difficult for the divorce to be finalized if the husband doesn't agree with it (apparently to stop her from making irrational decisions, etc). That's certainly not the case if it were the other way around.
If she simply doesn't like her husband, she can ask for a khula (separation), if he doesn't agree with it, then she can take him to court.

The evidence for that from the Sunnah is that the wife of Thaabit ibn Qays ibn Shammaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allaah, I do not find any fault with Thaabit ibn Qays in his character or his religious commitment, but I do not want to commit any act of kufr after becoming a Muslim.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to her, “Will you give back his garden?” Because he had given her a garden as her mahr. She said, “Yes.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to Thaabit: “Take back your garden, and divorce her.”

    (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5273).

From this case the scholars understood that if a woman cannot stay with her husband, then the judge should ask him to divorce her by khula’; indeed he should order him to do so.

If it's the other way round, the ‘iddah (period of waiting) of a divorced woman who has periods, with whom the marriage has been consummated and who is not pregnant, is a matter concerning which classical and contemporary scholars have differed. The view which is regarded as most correct by the majority of contemporary scholars, such as Shaykh Ibn Baaz and Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, and others, is that the ‘iddah ends when three menstrual periods have passed, and as soon as the third period ends, the ‘iddah ends.

The wife doesn't have to wait for a divorce, the husband does.

That's where you are wrong, I've lived in Kuwait for a while, and there are Shia living there. Shia is a branch of Islam which believe in Mohammed, but believe that the Khalifa? after his death should've been Ali, because he was Mohammed's cousin and relative and therefore it should've been him instead of Omar (or Abu Bakr?) I'm not too sure but it goes something like this.

As far as I know, a Muslim is a the follower of Islam (a monotheistic, Abrahamic religion based on the Qur'an, which Muslims consider the word of God as revealed to Mohammed and his teachings.) And they follow his teachings like you do. It's only that they believe that the Khalifa after Mohammed should've been Ali, and not the other guys, and that's where they branched off.

And Bashar Al Asad is an Alawite and not a Shia. Iran is a Shia majority country, but Syria is not, and in fact the majority of Syria is Sunni, and the Alawites and are a small minority there. Alot of Syrian people are Sunni FYI

So yes that makes them Muslim.

There's a difference between "having a Shariah council recognised" and "imposing Shariah law upon the UK".
Shouldn't be allowed Sharia councils either. Firstly it doesn't promote integration. Secondly there should be one set of laws for all people residing in the UK.

but you failed to mention all the islamic teachings that state a wife is worth half her husband and all the other nasty things about woman in the quran that are applied in sharia -

In 2003 a Malaysian court ruled that, under Sharia law, a man may divorce his wife
