Potentially made a mistake, Birmingham or Warwick

Hi,

I am coming to the end of a gap year and about to go to uni to study maths, I received offers from Birmingham and Warwick. I already have my grades so both are unconditional. I have fallen in love and wish to stay living with my girlfriend in Stourbridge (20-30 mins from B'ham, about 1.5 hours from Warwick). I just recieved an email from B'ham saying

Dear Daniel,
I know this is slightly awkward as I haven’t been in touch for a while.

I just wanted to take this one last chance to let you know that I have never given up on you and there’s still time for us to be together.

You can’t have been listening when I said that I really am in the top league I’ve had some amazing times with some of the best people ... I’m a great lover of fine art and culture and I’ve travelled the world to broaden my mind and provide the best for you.

Even Usain Bolt wants me.

If, in one of those moments of quiet reflection, you ever wonder how good it could have been, there’s still time; take a look.

We could be great for each other.

Firstly does this mean that I could still take my offer with them?

If yes what are you're opinions on the course comparitvely. Would B'ham prepare me for say a PHD in the same way as Warwick? how does the employability compare?

Also I would saying I am an able student so my question is how would the universities compare in terms of catering to and stretching me in certain areas which I may find easier. I have not been to university yet so I dont even know if this is an issue for higher education, I would just hate to go to uni and find it doesn't intellectually stimulate me.

Many thanks,
Dan

Finally if i start at Warwick would it be possible to switch courses to B'ham if the travelling was too much?

Thanks again

Just stay at Warwick :h:

you sure that wasn't from your girlfriend?

Well, what if you and your girlfriend split up? Would you be happy with your decision to change to Birmingham?

Warwick.

We have been together for pushing 2 years and have lived together for over a year, so there comes a point where you have to jump into it and hope it lasts, if it doesn't, then i have to pick up the pieces. So given that I will be commuting either way, I want to decide whether the extra commute of about an hour is worth it so need to be able to compare the two institutions

Do you really think your going to be bothered to do 3 hours of travelling if you have a one hour lecture to attend that day????

I'll tell you now, that you might say "yes i'll do it" and maybe will for a couple of weeks, and then you'll start thinking "whats the point", especially for those lectures where nobody knows your there, its boring or whatever. Then there will be the occasional time that you'll miss it and nobody will say anything, then you'll have a hangover from the night before, and even though you've got 2 hours of lectures, you still cant be arsed and you'll stay in bed. Again, nobody will say anything... Then eventually you'll reach your exams well fed up of the commute, pissed off with uni and hating it. Your relationship with course mates will be ****, because you never socialise with them, never see them in the bar or the SU, you dont play sports or join clubs.

Just my prediction... it can be hard work motivating yourself for uni at times, why make it any harder than it needs to be? Most people wouldnt travel 1.5 hours for a full time job on very good money, let alone travel an hour and a half to hear about a subject you might well have no interest in what-so-ever.

Do you recon the email I recieved suggests that there is a place available for me if i contact them? I know you're not an admissions tutor, but I obviously cant contact them till Monday so I'm just wanting to gather my ideas together.

Thanks

I'm no mathematician but Warwick seems to be one of the top places to go for this subject in particular. Go for it!

Bizarre email is bizarre
I went to Brum over Warwick because I totally adored the campus, department and course (and also because, like you, my other half was in the area and it meant I got to see him a lot). 7 years on we're still together, but I honestly think that would be the case if I'd gone to Warwick, which is barely much further. If you fancy learning to drive, it's not much hassle to get there. That said I *loved* my time at Brum, I'm now doing a PhD, and I don't regret it a bit. Go with the one you'd be happiest at, but try not to worry too much about your girlfriend - Warwick is so close that it's splitting hairs to jump for Birmingham for transport reasons.
I got that e-mail too, and I declined an offer from them. I clicked on it because I was curious, and it gave details about adjustment. I don't think it means you can take up your original offer.

If you want to do a PhD and want to go into academic stay in Warwick.

Word of warning if you want to get into academic you would be moving around a lot. One of my lecturer had to move country to find a department that offered him a job, at best you would have to be moving around until you get some position like lecturer.

If you want a top job, then Warwick is also the best choice.

If you don't really care and would rather stay with your gf then Birmingham. But, I think your plans are flawed.

You don't give up your plans just because of a girl. That is failure. If you break up with her then you have basically shot yourself in the foot a bit and if you truly cared about future you would pick Warwick. Also, it's only 1hour and 30 minutes. Don't see the problem.

P.S. If you move then kiss goodbye to an academic career and probably top banking jobs.

Can't you move? Warwick is amazing for maths - I think going to birmingham would be the biggest mistake of your life. Warwick is one of the top institutions in the UK for maths - go to Birmingham and then say goodbye to research + PhDs at top institutions and top banking/finance jobs.

Explain :s-smilie:

If you're serious, well ... I will be utterly confused as to how your university and that email are linked.

If you're joking, you are truly the most bizarre troll I have ever read. Ever.

You're treating this thread as rather normal, but are you not somewhat perturbed - as I am - by the contents of the OP?
