I think he was assuming that by "theology" I meant comparative religion ie not teaching any particular religion as true. But yeah, I definitely agree, indoctrination is quite harmful - and given the number of atheists + agnostics at my thoroughly Catholic school, pretty pointless as well. :smile:

Teaching one religion as better than others can encourage pupils to see people of that religion as better than others. In addition, indoctrination into one religion generally comes at the expense of learning about other religions. I would happily bet that at least one person in my year at my catholic school doesn't know that Islam is the religion of Muslims, as I can't think of a single occasion where we've been taught about Islam. Pupils have a right to receive unbiased information about major religions without the teacher or the school's religious preferences getting in the way.
