Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday?I know one of my coursemates rented a house in London during our second year. He said the commute wasn't too bad - the train journey takes about 35 to 45 minutes depending on which train you get. Then again he also spent a lot of time sleeping at our houses in Guildford during the week...(Original post by natalie_gs)
Would this be possible? Anyone know anyone who doesn't stay in uni accommodation, but travels, from Central London and back? I am thinking of doing this, as I just don't want to stay on campus.
Any information/ advice appreciated
Out of interest, why don't you want to stay on campus? -
Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday?Hey, I guess this would be possible as a friend of mine used to travel from Bromley, Kent (she had to get a train to London Waterloo), though she was re-taking her first year, so she didn't have as many modules. It depends on the course, Sciences (Biomed/chem/physics) have a lot of practical work so its better to be living on campus so you can meet the deadlines.(Original post by natalie_gs)

As you live centrally, it shouldn't be too bad, just under an hour like the person above me said, I live in East London and it took me 1 hour and a half to get to Guildford station (from my house), when I used to come back after visiting home.
Can I ask why you don't want to live on campus? My housemate last year, who was a first year from Clapham, did not like the accomodation that she was offered and decided look for a house herself, so maybe you could do that?Last edited by (",); 18-08-2011 at 19:56. -
Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday?Possible, but I know people who have done this and all of them have wanted to move to campus a.s.a.p and all gone onto waiting lists/tried to move in somewhere, very quickly (from Reading and parts of London).(Original post by natalie_gs)

As previously said, why not campus accommodation? There must be a reason... Also why not rent somewhere in Guildford? -
Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday?I think a return ticket for Waterloo -> Guildford is about £20. So at a guess I would say you're looking at £20*12*5 = £1200 (assuming a 12 week semester, with lectures every day), so £2400 for both semesters. That's obviously worse case, assuming you're in uni every day.(Original post by EmilioAlzamora)
how much are the travel expenses (if you go by train from Central London to Surrey) (for two semesters) - any ideas? (approximately).
thank you!
No idea how much a season ticket would/could save you, or railcards etc. Just going off the top of my head... I'm sure people will pounce on me if I'm wrong. -
Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday?Well, assuming your maths is right, and the passenger has a 16-25 railcard, we can assume that 2400x0.66 ~ £1600(Original post by EEngWillow)

Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday?I hope my maths is right. We don't do much numeracy in maths any more... It's all "let x be the cost of a train fare, and y be the total cost blah blah..."(Original post by Strangey)

Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday?
Depends on your course. Anything in Engineering and Physical Sciences or Health and Medical Sciences is very intensive, so is a bad idea.
List of which course is where is here -
Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday?
I'm in a similar situation, but it's for a postgraduate degree in engineering that i'll be doing. I'm thinking of staying in london (at home) to save money because there's no funding for doing a postgrad... I'm wondering if it's worth taking the offer, or should I just go to another uni in London. I want to go to surrey but I don't want my grades affected by the time wasted through travelling.
Does anyone know when the last trains from guildford to london usually are? -

Plus the cost of getting to the campus by bus.(Original post by Strangey)

Season tickets often aren't cost-effective for irregular travel and it is unlikely the OP will want/need to travel every day of every week. -
Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday? The train station is only 5-10 minutes walk from the lecture halls...granted that doesn't mean people won't try and get a bus anyway!(Original post by Good bloke)

It's very dependent on your course. I know first hand that Electronics students at Surrey have about 23 hours of contact time average in first year and are on campus every day. Second year was about 20 hours across about 4 days. I'd imagine the workload across the faculty of Engineering would be similar. Given the female nature of the OP's username it does seem unlikely they'd be doing Engineering though...

And in complete opposition to my above stereotyping...
The penultimate train is to Waterloo departing at 23:39, arriving in London at 00:31.(Original post by yennibubs)

The last train is to London Paddington departing at 00:02, change at Reading (35 minute wait) and arrives at 02:05.Last edited by EEngWillow; 02-07-2012 at 19:49. -
Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday? Thanks for that. Doesn't look like a good idea to be getting any last trains then, considering it'll take me a while to get back from waterloo by tube too. Don't want to risk getting stuck in waterloo with no tubes back home(Original post by EEngWillow)

and I certainly don't want to arrive in paddington at 2.05 haha.
and yes, a female engineer! From my experience in engineering, I'd also think it's almost safe to assume the OP will not be studying it. lol -
Re: Travelling from London to surrey, everyday?Yeah. The majority of trains from Guildford go to Waterloo anyway (and vice versa). Sorry it wasn't better news!(Original post by yennibubs)
