Discussion about medicine applications and medicine.

Re: Is medicine with foundation year...Yeah, Durham do too. I think like Elwyn said, it's for local students who have missed their grades living in a deprived area.(Original post by Elwyn)
I think UEA have one for those with lower grades. Bear in mind these courses will have other entry criteria though, such as having to live in a deprived area, etc. -
Medicine With a Foundation Year
I have just finished my A Levels and am taking a gap year. I am going to apply to study medicine for 2013 entry. But I am going to have to apply for the foundation year course, because I dont have the right subjects. I need some help regarding my personal statement.
I have done some work experience in a dentist and wanted to know whether I can write about this in my personal statement? And I need some help with the 'why medicine question', most applicants will talk about how A level biology and chemistry has made them want to study medicine. I have to say why I want to change from my subjects (Maths, ICT, Business Studies, and AS Physics) to medicine. I can't find any personal statements from people who have applied for the foundation year course, in order to get some guidance.
Any help will be much appreciated
Thanks -
Re: Medicine With a Foundation Year
May or may not help but there is one statement on the wiki: here (personally I'd rate that PS as a yellow - average basically)
And I'm sure your PS Helper will be able to give you advice if you post your PS up there.
As for the dental work experience, it's probably best if you do some medical related work instead. You don't want to give the impression you're applying for both courses or are unsure of what you want to do again. If you don't have time or haven't done any other work exp, then you will have to find a way of spinning it into your PS.Last edited by Kyalimers; 14-08-2012 at 00:46. -

I have got some medical work experience but I was just thinking whether it would look better to add it in to show that I've done it there as well and what I've learnt from there. Also, it gives me something extra to write about. But if it will have a negative impact I wont use it. -

It won't look good unless you tell a 'white lie' and change things slightly (which I would advise against clearly). Dental work experience won't really have helped you gain the relevant experience required in medicine. Therefore, it would seem really odd if you did include and correspondingly reflect upon it. Stick to medical work experience and any voluntary work you have gained. -
Re: Medical School Foundation & Widening Access Courses Questions & Advice Megathread
hey guys I really need some help.
My AS grades are A-Sociology
C-Maths
C-chemistry
D - Biology
I want to do the foundation medicine degrees offered at Kings,Nottingham,Southampton or UEA. Could you guys let me know if I have a good shot for this course and the things I need to specifically mention to be seen ass the right candidate for the course. I have checked the requirement criteria and I fit. However at GCSE I achieved 4A* 1A 3B 1C and a merit in BTEC would these grades hinder my chances of being accepted for the foundation course. IF any sucessful foundation degree applicant can also message me with tips I would be really grateful.
thanks guyss.

Re: Medical School Foundation & Widening Access Courses Questions & Advice MegathreadThere were 550ish people who applied for places in 2012, 95-100 interviews, 25 places.(Original post by taz101)
Anyone know anything about the competition for places in UEA's foundation course?
I'm starting in Sept so will know more about the course then.
Good luck with what ever you decide to do

Re: Medical School Foundation & Widening Access Courses Questions & Advice MegathreadYou need BBC for southampton including Bio/Chem so you would need to work on that. Your GCSEs are fine though. Soton don't look at AS results. Just predicted. So get your predicted good and you're good to apply!(Original post by letpeaceb)

Would it be ok if I also apply for foundation courses? I was under the impression that it was for people who didn't take science A-levels
GCSE's: 4a* 6As
A level: AAAb
Also I'm from a relatively poor area in London according to the statistics ?
Thanks in advance -
Re: Medical School Foundation & Widening Access Courses Questions & Advice MegathreadYep. You need to meet two of the eligibility criteria that are found on the BM6 page (google BM6 Southampton). If you're in London you could also try EDMP at Kings. (There is also UEA, Nottingham and Leeds)(Original post by This Honest)

If you're predicted AAA they'll be interested why you're applying and not going for a normal course. You won't be given preference over someone with BBC either, but if you want to apply and you meet the criteria you are more than able to!
Some do need science A levels, others don't.

Right thanks!(Original post by BethaneyJ)

Re: Medical School Foundation & Widening Access Courses Questions & Advice MegathreadYes. You don't need a good UKCAT score exactly. They don't have a cut of or anything, just use it along side everything else. It doesn't have much weight. PS is very important.(Original post by bad8oy)
if i was too apply to southampton mb6 with predicted grades A*BB or A*AB would i stand a good chance with a good ukcat score and personal statement, and obviously meeting 2 of the criteria?? thankyou
However! With BM6, having A*AB does not mean you'll definitely get a place, nor will you get a place instead of/over someone with BBC (the current offer). Once you've met the minimum requirements it's a fair playing field and goes on PS etc. -
Re: Medical School Foundation & Widening Access Courses Questions & Advice MegathreadI was BM6 class of 2010/2011 so I've been there done that :P My PS is here but it is a bit old and actually not very good xD.(Original post by bad8oy)
okay ofcourse i should make sure my personal statement is amazing. if you have already applied and been accepted could you post your personal statement that has been successfull so we can all see the kind of thing we have to write?? also it would be a big help if you would read mine obviously i dont want to post it publicly though incase someone will copy
and if you dont mind me asking what was ur ukcat score. thanks.
Southampton say they want the following:
You will be asked to demonstrate that you:
have motivation and initiative
are literate and articulate
have the ability to demonstrate a commitment to becoming a doctor
So this is a good place to start.
If you post your personal statement here then it is only visible to other personal statement helpers (people who are already in university) and then either myself or another PS helper will look at it for you
Remember to post your statement and where you want to apply just so it makes it easier! I'll keep an eye out for you and try to me your reviewer but there are a lot of really great PS helpers (and a lot of them are far better than me at PS Help!!).
I don't remember but I think it was totalled just under 3000. It was a lot time ago now as I applied in 2009!!!! -
Re: Medical School Foundation & Widening Access Courses Questions & Advice MegathreadSomeone will look at it once it is tagged!(Original post by bad8oy)
hi i have just posted my personal statement. Any help would be much appreciated and i am looking to apply to medicine. i will probably be for southampton mb6 as a 4th choice because im eligible to do so.
thanks

Also, it is BM6 not MB6. Not sure if it's a repeated typo or not, but just wanted to clarify

Okay, no problem, will stick to medical. I am really stuck on how to start my PS and i have very little time to do it in. I need to start it before Friday. Any help would be much appreciated. You can PM me if you like.

Re: Manchester College Access to MedicineIt is north Manchester, almost central. Yeah the interview was very informal. I didn't even get interviewed by the course tutor like most people did. Either way, I got a place and I'm starting in a couple of weeks.(Original post by happyhands)
Very informal, very quick. Very few questions - really they only ask you why you want to study science - I imagine your answer will be 'so I can apply to uni', which is all they're after hearing.
Is Nicholls in north Manchester btw? -
Re: *MEGATHREAD* - Medical School Foundation & Widening Access Courses Questions & AdHi.(Original post by BethaneyJ)
Nope. Your Dad going to Uni rules you out of that one, but you need to meet 2 criteria out of a few:
You must satisfy two of the eligibility criteria listed below in order to be eligible for the BM6 programme, and you will be expected to provide documentary proof.
- first generation applicant to higher education
- parents, guardian or self in receipt of a means-tested benefit
- looked-after young people living in supported accommodation
- in receipt of an EMA (Education Maintenance Award) or similar grant
- living in an area with a postcode which falls within the lowest 20 per cent of the Index of Multiple Deprivation (authenticated by the University), or a member of a travelling family
Hope this helps!
I meet criteria 4 but I'm not sure about the last one.
I'm using this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datab...overty-england to see if my borough (Brent) is in the lowest 20% of deprived areas but I can't tell
Can you help?
and if you dont mind me asking what was ur ukcat score. thanks.
