    Gym / fitness at UEA
Apologies if this has already been asked.

Just got accepted for UEA as my firm choice! My main hobby is bodybuilding, I'm aware that there is a gym in the sportspark center. Could anyone give me some info on it, like are the weight training facilities good, prices, how far from campus etc. I've heard it can get pretty busy, how busy, do you need to queue or wait to get on a bench etc?

Also, are there any alternative gyms within reasonale distance of campus?

    Thanks!

I like training too so I asked about the gym as well. They got a bench, no squat rack and you can do deadlifts (although supposedly they don't have that many plates - I don't know how many exactly). The dumbells only go up to 40kg. Its £1.60 per session, although I've heard a rumour you can get membership for £120 for the year.

I'm planning on really getting my weighted dips and pull-ups up seeing how limited their facilities are.

    Its on campus though.

Ok thanks for the info! Price seems reasonable, in fact excellent if that rumour is true as that price would only get me 4 months at my current gym.

Dumbells will be fine then, I'm comfortable enough with 72kg for dumbell press. As long as there's dumbells, incline/decline benches, dip station, deadlift facilities, and leg machines then I should be fine. No squat rack is annoying, even though my current gym only has a smith machine for squats which is too restricting.

Afaik the cheap price is only during off-peak times. It gets fairly busy as it serves members of the public as I believe it is the only gym this side of the city at least.

Cambridge's gym was £40 a year... I'm going to miss that :daydreaming:
    But £120 a year isn't bad!

I'm really looking forward to the Sports Park!

Yea, considering most private gyms will charge you £25-30 for off peak access a month it's really not too much. I kept telling myself last year I would go to the gym but I've been slacking, going to try and go at least a couple of times a week all year this year.

I had the same problem when the heat turned on for my thesis. Generally I can't do the few days a week thing. If its not part of my daily routine, the wheels fall off entirely. So I generally fare well when I have a scheduled 'gym slot' each day. I think it will have to be done that way at UEA. I am doing a PhD and have signed a contract to work full time hours. So for the first time in my study life I will be trying to achieve a 9-5 pattern. This should make it easy to keep up gym. Also the Uni and gym are very far from where I live (near Norwich station) so I'll need to do gym while at work. At least that means the off peak thing should be fine.

There is a gym near the station - I don't know the price, but would you not be better using that one? Think it's a Fitness First one :dontknow:

Yea, my problem last year was I was living halfway between Norwich and Great Yarmouth so I didn't always have time to go to the gym when I was at uni but then on the flip side travelling on my day off to go to the gym would add at least another 2 and a bit hours in terms of travel time. As of about a month ago though I'm renting privately in Norwich just off Dereham Road so I don't have the same issue.

On a side note, UEA has so many stair ways you will feel like rocky.

this is what i wanted to know...i'm currently at fitness 1st but cancelling membership before i move to UEA...but i'm on the student one where you can use any fitness 1st across the country...so i could just carry on with that? or maybe the one on campus would be less expensive. hmm.

Depends on what you are paying and how often you go, if you are certain you are going to go regularly it's probably best to pay for the year entry at the UEA as no private gym can match that price.

Ok I just read this: http://sportspark.co.uk/uea-students-staff-3/

UEA Students need to take their campus cards at the Sportspark reception for validation. The validated campus card will give free entry into Sportspark and the lowest activity charges. The cost of this is jointly met by the University and the Department of Physical Education and Sport.

    So we get free entry?

Free entry, yes. That means you don't have to pay the 60p guest fee. However, you still need to pay for every activity you do (if you look at the leaflets on the sportspark website you pay the educational fee)

Well its basically like doing three a-levels so we are going to need more time, especially seeing as we are being taught a couple of subjects.
