Chinese Studies

OP preparing for your subject will never put you at a disadvantage. In fact I really recommend it. Look up the Chinese radicals and practise stroke order of characters. When you get into the subject the teachers will probably be expecting you to keep up with your character knowledge, so this means you'll need to make it easier for yourself to memorise them. Radicals are really fun to learn about and help you decipher character meanings  if you have an iPod touch or iPhone look up the app Mindsnacks for Chinese. First few lessons are free and you pay £2.99 for the full 50. Really useful! The app has games about characters and phonetics - they're fun too!

sorry to butt in on this thread, but i'm just curious.. is it possible to learn mandarin somehow (maybe there are some classes/modules etc) at sheffield if you aren't studying chinese/east asia etc?

You can do non specialist mandarin modules as an elective if you have any free credits.

You can take electives in Chinese at Sheffield which will start from beginners level but-and without wanting to sound rude or condescending at all here- if you are not intensively studying Chinese, and have no intention of studying the language in China, it's very unlikely that you will be able to gain a level of fluency (or even good conversational ability) purely from classes once or twice a week.

I am about to start my fourth year studying Chinese, and i've lived in China for 2 years, and to be honest, i'm still not fluent, not even close.

There's a reason Chinese is considered one of the hardest languages to learn, and if you're considering taking it on, you will need to put a LOT of effort in.

Having said all that, a first year friend of mine took a Mandarin elective and enjoyed herself, found the classes interesting etc so i'd definitely recommend it as an interest or as something you might consider taking further later on

Hmm whoopsie, I missed my offer by quite a lot...

I got BBC instead of ABB so they wouldn't let me do Chinese and business, but I got onto just Chinese studies.

I was pretty unlucky, 2 UMS off a B in biology so literally 1 mark!

And then I got the exact same score in my other 2 subjects 304 UMS when 320 is an A... So although I missed by what appears to be loads.. I really was close to getting AAB.

I have a place, but do you think it's worth remarking to get the 2 ums maybe for a BBB result set?

First congratulations on getting into Sheffield even if it wasn't on your preffered course, hope to see you in September
And in my opinion it would be worth getting a remark as you're already in and with such a high C even if the remark goes down it wont be by enough to change the grade down. So go for it and good luck!

Hey there. Congratulations to you too! In fairness the Chinese was what I wanted to do, business was moreso for career prospects but overall I'm just ecstatic I got in!

I look forward to meeting you in September! Not long to go at all!

Do you know much/any Chinese?

I used to study on a sunday morning so I know a little, but really nothing more than the basics. I'm no where near even GCSE standard so still pretty much a beginner. What about you?

And do you know your accommodation yet?
I'm in Ranmoor - Wimberry D6 (think that's the name).

Oops, turned out I used my school email for accomodation and did receive an offer on friday D:

Windgather D6 in Ranmoor, so close enough to be social if we get on, and far enough away for you to ignore me entirely if you dislike me! The best of both worlds!

Haha sounds good  I'm sure we'll get to spend plenty of time together in classes anyway, SEAS seems fairly small anyway.

Nice to meet you, I'll be sure to come check out the stall and get involved  Can't wait to hear all about the year abroad, I'm already so excited for it!

Does anyone know when we will find out our timetable or book list? I'm really excited to start the course although I'm sure within a couple of weeks i'll be completely brain dead from it.

Nyehh, Really confused about modules and how they work in general...

In the information pack about freshers week the booklet says to research which modules interest you in advance so you can make an informed decision at the welcome meeting where your module choices must be finalised...

But how do I know how modules work exactly?

http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/seas/undergraduates/ugmodules

There is a list of different modules, but what do levels mean? As I am first year do I chose from level 1 modules? How do I know how many credits I have/need to take? Is this really simple and i'm just being stupid? The answer is probably written in bold somewhere and i'm just not seeing it.

Also the descriptions are really brief.. How can I find out more information about each module?

Hey Roxas

First Semester = Chinese 1A (20 Credits) 2B (20 Credits) = 40 credits < these are core modules. Then you have extra 20 extra credits to choose for unrestricted modules totaling 60 credits for 1st semester.

Second Semester = Chinese 2A (20 Credits) 2B (20 Credits) = 40 Credits < these are core modules. Then once more you have 20 extra credits to choose for unrestricted modules totaling 60 credits for 2nd semester.

So the whole year you must have completed 120 credits. If that make sense lol. I don't do chinese studies but I just asked my friend who is going into her 3rd year and she told me this.

Hope that helps lol Which accommodation are you staying?
Reply 116
If I remember correctly they will discuss everything to you on your course welcome meeting  and then you can just get your modules checked and signed

Congrats on getting into Sheffield! I was in Ranmoor (Ramshaw C2) for first year, really enjoyed myself, even though it was quite a way from the centre of town.

Anyways, if you need any help with Chinese, you can give me a shout!

Thanks a lot, can't wait to get to Sheffield and start! Not long to go now

Can you be more specific with quite a way from the centre of town? Where I currently live it's about a 20-30 minute drive to a reasonably large town so I thought Ranmoor was pretty close in comparison, a 20 minute walk I think it was?

I hope you know what you are letting yourself in for with that request! I might be pestering you all year! Thanks though hah.
