Can you give any tips for the research methods for the A2 module crime and deviance. I mean is it hard or is it just like AS where you just apply one research method?
    I think so. !!

Hey im doing A2 Sociology in september. Just wanted to know what topics did you do for A2. Im doing Crime and Deviance and Mass Media. Looking at the comments it seems Crime and Deviance is a pain in the backside. Do you have any special tips on how to conquer this module and get an A* hopefully for sociology.
Yeah I did crime and deviance. I think I should have some notes lieing around. If I find them, I'll PM you and pass them your way. It was a while ago, but basically you just have to make a credible point, testify it with a sociologist who has an opinion which resonates with yours and then attempt to disprove your own point using another sociologist! I.E. The main cause of crime is X. This idea is fortified by Merton (Insert quote). Conversely, it can be argued that X is the cause of crime as Sociologist B asserts. Try to mention as many sociologists as you can, but make sure that they are pertinent to what you are saying. Don't just reiterate what they say, but explain it and occassionally argue against it.

Great, the only problem is that my sociology teacher wouldnt let me re-sit the exam in june cause she said you took the exam as a joke and you should'nt take the exam as there was like a 2 day gap between the education exam. however i will persuade my sociology teacher to let me re-sit the families & household paper in january 2012 fingerscrossed and get a high grade, im aiming for 65-70 marks so i can be sure that i can boost my overall grade by the looks of beliefs looks daunting, looks pretty hard and confusing lol what grade did u get in that paper (score) and what did you get for crime and deviance paper?? was the exams hard and are there any good and reliable site to revise from and just look over notes?
Surely you don't have to ask your teacher whether you're 'allowed' to resit?! That is atrocious. It's your education and decision, you should go ahead with it anyway, if you really think it will benefit you and you will do better! I done both families and education in June, but retook families the january after, the same time as Beliefs, and it was definitely the right decision! I got 68/80 on that paper, honestly it's not as bad as it looks, the hardest part I found was ideology, but the rest is generally oky Crime and deviance I got 102/120, although I have NO IDEA how as I only wrote a side for the 33 marker. The beliefs exam wasn't too hard, I just run out of time really. the amount you have to learn is about 1/4 of crime and deviance, or at least it seems like it!
I didn't use websites as the amount of time I spend trawling through was just wasting revision time, I just used the A2 sociology book which I posted on here a few days ago, by Lindsfarne press i think it is. It was a godsend to me. x

Thank you for the advice You sound like a very organised person! I'm gonna start working properly as soon as school begins, I won't allow myself to procrastinate this year! xx
Honestly, really try and do that as the amount of stress you will feel about UCAS/Exams/Grades/Uni etc is huge and you will want to help yourself out as much as possible

    Hey congrats on ur result
I'm going into a2 now but we do crime n res meths first
I just need advice on how to revise this year! C
My teachers not all that u see so I'm gona have to do alot of work alone
I really want to achieve an A at the end of it pls share ur tips o revision pls x
I think, as I've recommended to others, start your revision notes/mindmaps/diagrams early! And I mean grabbing a textbook where you can follow what you are learning in class, go over it lightly in the evening and making your notes. The link on amazon I posted further down is an amazing textbook xxx

I done Crime but not Mass Media unfortunately. I think the key to Crime is NAILING the theories and perspectives firstly, as they can enter every essay! Then just go through every topic and make lots of good, easy to access notes and start revision as EARLY as possible. I'd finished all my notes by May this year for the exam late June, I revised properly (as in actaully learning everything, writing essays etc) for three weeks solid, and I still wasn't entirely prepared and had last minute stuff to go over in theory and methods section xx

In the research methods, you will need to know ALL of the different types (experiments, observation, participant and non participant, interviews, structured and non-structured) and their theoretical, practical and ethical issues (reliability, consent, etc) and then apply them to many different aspects of crime and deviance. For example this year the question was 'examine the pros/cons of using unstructured interviews in studying domestic violence' or something like that. There are two questions like this if I recall correctly, look through some past papers on the AQA website x

To be honest, it's probably best to look at the AQA specification, that will have everything on it they also have more things in the 'resource bank' of how much depth to go in, what is involved in each minor topic etc xx

Hey everyone, I recently got awarded an A (5 marks off an A*!) in my Sociology A-level, and I know that at times it can be difficult, confusing, and people don't really know where the hell to start in their revision!

I took Families and Households, Education, Beliefs in Society and Crime and Deviance, along with the research and theory involved! If anybody has any questions, do not hesitate to ask as I really enjoyed the course and would be happy to help x
rachel please can you post the link of the textbook/revision guide u used please thanks

    Thanks.
    http://store.aqa.org.uk/qual/gce/pdf...W-QP-JUN10.PDF

Well let's take the June '10 paper. The exam is generally broken up like this, with 12 + 21 markers for crime, 9 + 15 for research in context, and 33 for theory and methods.

For the first question, I generally split my AO1 and AO2 evenly, slightly more AO2 though, I don't know if anyone else knows the exact break down on this first one? So 5/6 points on why females may be less likely to commit crime, 6 or more points backing it up with evidence or theorists, or counteracting it with other evidence and theories etc.

For the 21 marker, I think it's 12 AO2 and 9 AO1, once again not 100% but it rings a bell. Make sure you use the item, SOOO many people just forget to do that, though I'm sure you wouldn't. I use it twice usually just to show I've read that they want me to include it. After that, I branch out to other things from my notes, once again just using evidence and theorists to support whatever I'm saying.

Research methods are slightly easier, if it's 9 marks like this one and says give three problems, that's basically 3 marks per problem, so one mark for identifying the problem, two for explaining it. Dead easy to get full marks if you just know what is asked of you

What a lot of people do on the 15 marks when it asks for strengths and limitations is include far more limitations (apparently, that's what my teachers said anyway!) so it's important to include a lot of positives as well. I used to start with practical issues (time, money, location etc) then move onto ethical (consent, damage to participants, confidentiality etc) then theoretical (positivists vs. interpretivists) and 15 marks is earned before you know it! Obviously make sure you are continuously relating it to the question, for example this is discussing police attitudes so you need to say 'a strength in using PO in investigating police attitudes is that...' otherwise it's really easy to go off on a tangent stating 'PO is good because...' and not actually relating it at all back to the question

Finally, the 33 markers is 15 AO1 and 18 AO2, really go for it in this one! I don't really know how to help you on this one, it's usually just a very long debate of perspectives/theory etc and evidence to support this, you just need to know the topic well and different arguments surrounding this. x

Has anyone done this Sociology AS Essay? Any help please?!
So I've just had my first week of Sixth Form College and I've been set my first Sociology essay. It is to:

Critically evaluate the functionalist view on the role of the education system. (20 marks). I am studying AQA AS Sociology.

Any tips/advice, or any points which would be really good to include would be much appreciated. Obviously I am new to Sociology! Thank you!

    I received 115/120 in Unit 2: Education,
I originally gained a C in Unit 1, but retook in January and received 68/80.
    In Unit 3 I got a B, 64/80 and in Unit 4 I received 102/120 xxx

It honestly depends on how you revise. Personally, I copied up notes from each lesson that I had and made sure all the topics were neatly organised, so by the time the course was finished I had done all my notes for revision, aided from two textbooks and lessons. This mean that from when I broke up in December I had all my revision materials ready to revise from and all I had to do was sit there and learn it! So I'm guessing if you do it that way you would have at least three weeks of solid revision, xx
