Does Steam work when using halls of residence internet?

I know some unis block Steam and similar applications on their networks, but I'm wondering if Nottingham blocks it? If so, I'm not going to be able to play any of the games I've preordered for this Autumn!

I was going to get FIFA 12 on PC though.

They don't explicitly block it, but I don't think they support it either. I know Steam doesn't support connecting to the internet through a proxy server -- there is nowhere to put proxy settings. (It may work on Mac, as it will probably use the system-wide proxy settings.)

Steam isn't blocked. I used it last year and it had no problems connecting to the internet.

Ok, perhaps I'm wrong then (the SNS may well use a transparent proxy). I've tried it on the main uni network (not the SNS) and it definitely had problems.

Ah, okay. If it works on SNS I'll be fine, and I won't need to cancel my Red Orchestra 2 preorder. Thanks for the help!

From my experience, any game I bought and downloaded over the steam network worked fine, but games I already had on my system were very buggy when connecting to a server. I always managed to sort it out in the end though
Hmm, I hope it works - I want someone to escape off to if I need to :P

The University does sit behind a proxy so you might have some problems.

Guess it is just a case of try it and see.

Steam does work on the SNS. It is blocked on the main campus network though. This went up recently which mentions Steam: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/is/connect/sns/conditionsofuse.aspx
