Re: OFFICIAL: 2012 Graduate Scheme Applicationsgraduate scheme in global markets technology. I have not done an interneship(Original post by davidkp)
Sweet! Are you going through the graduate programme itself or going in as a normal employee? Did you intern? -
Re: OFFICIAL: 2012 Graduate Scheme ApplicationsCool, so I guess you'll be doing something in IT then?(Original post by jermaindefoe)
graduate scheme in global markets technology. I have not done an interneship
I saw your thread about BoAML vs Citi, dw, Citi is an awesome place to work, the staff benefits are fantastic and the facilities are great. You don't need to worry about their position in the markets if you're working in IT

Re: OFFICIAL: 2012 Graduate Scheme Applicationsi will be doing application development, yourself? I am interested to hear about the staff benefits and facilities(Original post by davidkp)

I didn't really ask about much of this when I had my interview

Re: OFFICIAL: 2012 Graduate Scheme ApplicationsAny noise?(Original post by alex_hk90)
Thanks; good luck to you too!
I've all along been looking into Actuarial, Consulting and Technology (and various mixtures between them).
I have been to quite a few interviews. More than 10 final interviews.
Got a job offer eventually in the actuarial field. They said they would do a security and credit check before finalising it.
My main concern is, the start date is in July. My master will not finish until September. I don't have any lessons from now til September. I want to start working but the uni is not happy with it.
When I went to interviews, my lecturers were not happy. One of them sent me an email warning me, saying that I should look after I got my result (which is in October / November) instead.
I am the only person who got interviews in my class. The lecturers cannot understand why "I" have to go to interviews when the majorities are not. I have to say, pure science / maths lecturers are not very realistic in terms of giving career advice.
Can the school refuse to give a reference? Can they stop me from working?
The job offer is unconditional. I would quit my studies go to work as a last resort.

Hmm, have you asked the company if they can delay your state date until September? Otherwise it sounds like your uni is just going to have to take it to be honest.(Original post by fastswift)

Re: OFFICIAL: 2012 Graduate Scheme ApplicationsThanks! Congratz to you too! KMPG is a good company. Heard that it is very hard to get into. I want to go into general insurance so I didn't apply to the big4.(Original post by alex_hk90)

I am really worried about the uni's reaction. Hope they are not going to stop me from working.

I have more interviews lined up. Not going to any of them except one. That company is very kind. They actually bought my tickets and emailed the reference number to me.
As a student, I am not rich enough to go to interviews if they are not going to pay for it.
One big company said that they cannot "guarantee" payment after negotiating with them on paying the 180 quid train ticket. I did not go to that interview. -
Re: OFFICIAL: 2012 Graduate Scheme ApplicationsYou're welcome, and thanks.(Original post by fastswift)

I really don't see how they can. As long as you're keeping up with your study, what you do in your spare time is up to you.(Original post by fastswift)

That's pretty bad. I've been lucky in that the three times I got to final stage the company has paid or done a video conference (I'm in China this year, so coming back for interviews would've been impossible if they didn't pay!).(Original post by fastswift)

Lucky you!
I got quite disappointed when I heard that they cannot guarantee payment. It is one of the largest insurer in world. Later a friend comfort me by saying that that company is not nice to staff, shown on their annual accounting report.
It is strange but I feel good writing to companies saying that I am not going to the assessment centre because I got a job offer. So far I have received 5 formal/informal invitations to interview after the offer.

Re: OFFICIAL: 2012 Graduate Scheme ApplicationsI was in the same situation as you since I had a job offer to start in August when my MSc programme only finishes at the end of September (when I have to hand in my thesis). I contacted HR and asked if it was OK to start on Oct 1st and they said no problem. So I won't be starting at the same time as most other graduates at the company but for large companies it really doesn't make much of a difference and they tend to be flexible in start dates. Maybe you should contact your company and tell them about the conflicting timeline and see what they say.(Original post by fastswift)

Either way, the university can't prevent you from starting your job this summer. The quality of your thesis might not be great since you'll be spending most of your time at your new job so worst case scenario you'll lose a few marks I think. But that really doesn't matter because you already have a job!
And it's ridiculous that your profs look down on you for going to interviews during the school year. Of course everybody does that, we're not going to wait until next November to apply to grad schemes and do nothing for 8 months. -
