Hi, I was just wondering how you UoC interview was? I have mine on the 11th of Jan and I'm fairly nervous!

It is just a normal interview. No tricks or test just ask about your work experience and the usual questions of why radiography? What skills does a radiographer need? blah blah blah.

Before your interview you will get a powerpoint talk about the uni and the course and get put in small groups to have a tour of the 2 x ray rooms at the uni that we are taught in and can practice in. Usually you get to have a little play with the equipment (usually in the CR room) and x ray a phantom hand between the group. Someone will position the hand and someone will move the tube and someone else will push the button for the exposure and someone else will go and collect the cassette and process it.

It is really relaxed for the whole day and the lecturers are really nice genuine people. They are impressed by your application which is why they have invited you up to the interview so they want you to do well, they won't try and catch you out with odd questions and they will help you out if you freeze up.

I just had a scroll through my timetable and saw the interviews on the 11th are at Carlisle and I am at Lancaster so a few things might be different. The lecturers travel between the two campuses though so I know some of the lecturers doing the interviews and they are all really nice people.

I second what Rach says, I know it is probably easy for us to say now but it really is a straightforward interview asking why you want to do the course, what you know about the career/course and why you think you are suited to it etc. All the staff are friendly and I wouldn't say it was overly formal or anything like that. Just make sure you are prepared and you'll breeze through it.

I remember before my interview last year I basically looked at the SOR website and radiography careers, tried to take in as much as I can and it really helped.

Actually, only the other day one of our lecturers said they were discussing this and what a good choice we have made for our future job prospects. The NHS determines how many places they will pay for according to how many vacancies they anticipate. There are a lot of Radiographers nearing retirement as well so I don't think job shortage is anything to worry about especially if you are willing to relocate. There are other avenues worth considering as well such as teaching, specialisation, vetinary radiography etc.
Good luck!

Thanks alot for this! put my mind at ease lol. Doing my application this week so keeping my fingers and legs crossed. thanks again

Thanks very much for your replies, when they gave you an offer did they specify what grades you needed in which subjects? Or was it an open point offer?

It was open points but a C in science was specified.

They may be changing it for this year though.

If I am lucky enough to get an offer I am going to go crazy if they ask for a B in Biology lol

Also what did you wear for the interview? I am worried I am going to look informal not wearing a suit but wearing a shirt+jumper+tie pants and shoes?

I just wore black trousers, a white and black striped shirt, a black cardigan and black shoes.

I don't think I saw anyone in a suit at my interview.

Also the entry requirements for this year are 280 points with a C in a science subject.

Have you filled in the clinical visit forms?
They are part of the conditions of an offer along with a CRB check which the uni sorts out if you put them as your firm choice.

I was going to say I might see you about there but first years have a self study day because of the interviews so I'll probably be in bed all day :P

Good luck though.
Any questions, feel free to ask.

Hi thanks

Do you remember what sort of things they asked you in the interview? Also what you did at the interveiw?

Thanks

Ye I have all that sorted, I actually did my work experience at Cumberland Infirmary which is one of the unis teaching hospitals. I also met with a few on the course tutors (a very nice lady called Gail who you have probably met, she teaches at the Lancaster campus)

I was a mature applicant so only had to pass the health and CRB stuff

Hiya, I think Gail is based up at Carlisle. What you plan to wear for the interview sounds just right to me if you're going to be comfortable wearing that? Sounds smart but not OTT. When I did my work experience I also did it at a local hospital which I think helps. Sounds like you're pretty much sorted so I wouldn't fret too much.

Which campus have you applied to? Are they going to be your firm if you get an offer?

I've just received a interview letter from Birmingham and it's on the 11th January. I am going to be nervous for this all over xmas. What kind of questions will they ask me? Im really busy with assignments but should I read some radiography books to give me some knowledge?

You have eased my mind

So I am just going to read over my personal statement and go on the SOR website and try to retain 'What is a radiographer' etc..

I am debateing in my head what to do about firm and insurance ect. If I get an offer from Cumbria (+I already have one from Liverpool) I won't know what to do. I am trying to weigh up the benefits and draw backs- if i went to Cumbria (I applied to Carlisle campus) I could live at home and travel but would I get a good enough 'student experience'? Would I be able to mix with people when not living in halls or being able to go on drunken nights out as I would'nt be able to stay in Carlisle the whole night.

Too many choices!

You will make friends and on nights out I'm sure they won't mind you crashing at theirs. I live off campus, quite a way away from Lancaster but as I'm a mature student it doesn't really bother me not living in halls and going out every night as I've had that experience before. I won't lie, you will probably find it hard at first but after a week or two you'll be fine I'd imagine.

Weigh up the pros and cons. If you live at home and were lucky enough to get your placement near your home it would save you a fortune in having to possibly pay rent for accomodation that you won't be using on placement.

If you have any questions about Liverpool as a city feel free to ask since I am originally from there and live there all my life until I moved away fro uni.

There are a few people on our course who travel in and they have said for the first few weeks they did feel left out especially during freshers week but now they have all made friends who live on or near campus and usually spend the night there after a night out. I have a few friends who spend the night at mine and get the bus in the morning to save taxi fare.

Also joining a club or team will help to make friends, I have made a lot of friends through karate.
Also in Carlise there are only 25ish students compared to the 45 in Lancaster so I think it will be easier to make friends up there.

Carlisle students can get placements in Carlisle, Dumfries, Northumbria (North Tyne or Wansbeck), South Tyneside and Sunderland. They do take into account where you live and if you get a bursary to cover travelling expenses when deciding your placement. This might help with making your decision about uni's and living at home etc.

been offered interviews at two of my choices. still waiting to hear from the other three, but they are a 2hr drive away (rather than a 2hr train journey) so the least ideal of all my options lol

just need to step up a gear with my Access course, as most Unis seem to be upping their requirements, since i started this whole process

anyone know if you will look daft turning up to interview with a small suitcase, as im going to travel up by train, and stay the night before?

I've travelled up for two of my interviews - just ask your hotel to store your suitcase and pick it up after the interview? That's what i did.
