Is the reason you need to say why radiography over nursing because your applying to the university for radiography when you previously turned them down for nursing?

Yes hun, I feel that I need to put it on there because they would have this on the system somewhere- I don't want them to think that I change my mind so easily, but I am glad that I looked after my Grandmother because during that time I realised that Nursing is not a job that I could do- I had no experience before, but seeing someone being fed through a feeding tube, washing them, dressing them etc was emotionally hard on me- I really am having trouble wording this, as I do not want it to be a negative thing x

this is the same with me i was considering nursing but was too emotion and personal for me

Oh right ok. In a way you can use the experience to your advantage- You now know the role of what a nurse would be an you can be mature enough to rule out studying it as a degree because you want a career which is more scientific and working in a fast paced/ rapidly growing area of health. Talk about being interested in technology whilst still being interested in health and caring for people. Talk about wanting to help a massive spectrum of people- you don't have to specalise in an area eg. Adult/ child/ mental health, and you don't have to specialise in an illness such as presurgery nursing ect.

I think a phrase I used was 'fluidity of the radiography process' obviously to quote it exactly but it seemed to impress lol.

Hi again- you got my brain going now and I keep thinking of new ways to spin yourself. Another way I just thought of would be to say your more interested in providing a diagnosis (which is radiography) then actual treatment (which is nursing as to my knowledge, they don't actually diagnose, radiographers do)

You could do but I would focus on why radiography as opposed to saying why not to do nursing. Also try not to mention it too much- give it a little mention to make them aware of your situation but not too much detail- you can be sure that they are going to ask you about it at the interview.

Most Radiographers don't actually diagnose, apart from reporting radiographers, but these are quite senior and mainly work in general x-ray. You have to be careful as some people make the mistake of describing Radiography as though it was Radiology. Radiographers are instrumental in the diagnoses process and can draw attention to areas they are concerned about via the "red dot", but do not necessary offer diagnoses. Diagnoses is usually made by the specialist who has viewed the xray/scan.

I do understand the difference. In essence you do diagnose. You take the images which hold the diagnosis don't you?

In our Trust there are reporting radiographers in CT,MRI, Mammo,as well as general. From post-qualification onwards radiographers here become part of the diagnostic process through red-dot schemes , written comments,and red-flagging eg urgent chests. That said actually producing images is an obviously vital part of the diagnostic process and in my experience this can be more difficult in certain cases than actually reporting on the images.
