Yeah, pretty much. There are some hospitals that say you should do them but you can get away with evening shifts but others don't really mind at all.
Any other questions about anything?
Yeah I actually do have another question. Which is the nearest clinic to Birmingham University for students to join? -
Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012The University Medical Practice which is near the medical school, or there is another one in sell oak, not sure about its name though.(Original post by groovyangel2008)
Thank you!

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012As areyouthere said a lot of students are patients at the University Practice, which is about a 5 minute walk from the medical school and quite close to Halls on the Vale and in Pritchatt's Park. I'm registered at Bournbrook Varsity in Selly Oak because it's a lot closer to where I live. These practices and a few of the walk in services are the best because the don't take students for teaching!(Original post by groovyangel2008)

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012Well the full sized research projects that are done during the intercalated BSc take half the year to do, so it would be a bit much to expect us to do one during an SSC. The SSCs are sometimes research based, rather than doing original research though you conduct a literature review on current studies and review the findings. I hope this answers your question, let me know if there's anything you'd like to know.(Original post by 3rd time lucky?)
hey can any of the current medics help me with this please? Does birmingham let you do a research based SSC by this i mean a research project like you would do in an intercalated BSc? -
Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012In first year you have 2, each of which last a week. In second year you have another which lasts a week and one which runs throughout the second term along side the other modules. Third year SSCs are similar to second year and in 4th year the elective is the main component.

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012
Hi Guys, I'm an international gap year applicant who's currently waiting on my CAS number to apply for my UK student visa.... Are there any other gap-year students in the same position? By chance, do you know when CAS numbers will be given out to international students. Thanks for any help in advance

So people are known to get stabbed in Birmingham then? See link: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=2059658
I know there were some incidents during the riots.. question to current medics at birmingham, do you feel safe being in Birmingham? -
Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012I don't know anyone who has been mugged/attacked/stabbed.(Original post by groovyangel2008)

Birmingham is a big city, there will be a certain level of crime, but there are many things you can do to reduce your risk of being a victim. Personally I feel that the area around the University, The Vale and Selly Oak is very safe. There is a large student population, and I've noticed a increased police presence recently.
Obviously I wouldn't walk down the back streets on my own on a Friday night but that's just stupid. -

Yeah, a pharmacist at my work said when he went to Aston uni he saw 3 kids get stabbed in the city centre, but that's gonna be the same with any big city in the Uk, think about London, people get stabbed there all the time...we'll be fine, just avoid dodgy people! -
Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012Haven't heard of any stabbings around Edgbaston/Selly Oak. Though Selly has a bit of a rep for robbery, just be sensible and it's fine.(Original post by tomtom415)

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012
Hi everyone, this is just a quick post to say good luck to those of you who will be recieving your A level results this week!
Let me know if you have anymore questions in this last month or so before we see you in beautiful Brum!
Tip: Look on track the morning of results - I didn't and it was the worst feeling standing in the queue in college in front of everyone not knowing how it was going to go! -
Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012You don't need to buy anything in advance desperately; it'll wait for term-time when your lecturers will give you their opinions on textbooks and the medschool has its own library (you'll never need to go down to the main campus library ever in my experience; the Barnes Library is a brilliant resource). The BMA, MDU, MPS etc. will be at the fair in the Wolfson Common Room and usually give you some freebies for signing up - I think the MDU give you an Oxford Concise Medical Dictionary so don't go buy one of them!(Original post by cookie94)
Do any current Bham medics have any advice on what textbooks to buy? It's looking pretty pricey...!!
When you do get around to textbooks, they will be expensive yes. Depending on how much money you want to save (my parents were very generous with regards to textbooks so I didn't have to worry particularly) you can get away with not having some of the more specialised recommended texts, but at the least you'll want one general Anatomy text and one general Physiology text; and probably a histology text too because you'll have a lot of microscope images to work with for anatomy sessions; these are often a sheet with 12+ labelled slides and accompanying questions in the first semester looking at, say, the layers of the epidermis or different neurones etc etc. Oh and you can have 3 (or if really unlucky 4) of these sheets and question packs a week
so a histology text is really worthwhile; library-ing them is really inconvenient.
The medschool usually recommend Gray's Anatomy for Students, which is a full, written textbook as opposed to just an atlas of diagrams and Boron & Boulpaep's Medical Physiology, which is the master-tome of just about every process that occurs in the body. As for histology, I'd recommend Wheater's Functional Histology, but the Medschool also recommend Junqueira's Basic Histology - in my year, though, they told everyone to get Junq's Histo and then used quite a few images from Wheater's when they didn't have their own slides on things, so I found it extra-handy; but I feel Wheater's is better anyway imho.
There's loads of other textbooks you'll get plugged to you, but too much to write in one reply. If you have any questions, we've got a good article on TSR with a handful of us reviewing medical textbooks we've used.
You might also find the TSR medicine wiki in general useful, and I've written a few things on Brum specifically in A week in the life... and Reflections of a First Year.... The latter has a bit on textbooks too iirc.

mostly clinical students there, especially 4th and 5th years but I've been here since beginning of 2nd year and... wow, so much nicer than Selly
sadly just harder to get to all the parties
