Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012
Discussion of individual medical schools and their courses for applicants and current students. Not for all those 'Am I Good Enough' questions.

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012No, each year is 120 credits, so they're all worth the same (as far as I'm aware).(Original post by tomtom415)
Well I read somewhere that the year 3 clinical exam is worth 120 credits and the year 1+2 exams are also worth 120 credits?
I also think you should change the name of the group to Birmingham Medics FRESHERS 2012, cause if you think about it you're no longer applicants, you're coming here in September!! -
Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012Yes it is the medics theatre society, which I am part of

We have 1 musical and 1 play every year. I've put myself forward to be vocal coach this year, so if you come to see footloose in November you'll be able to tell who I am!
I don't know why Gozatron thinks we're "eww", he's probably jealous of our amazing talent! -
Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012It can be but it shouldn't be. I'm in a medics sport team and with better time management i would have been fine, but i've been such a lazy arse this semester! It's just a case of finding the team to work and keep on top of it!(Original post by coco739)
is it difficult to juggle sports or any other "clubs" with studying?
Slightly jealous, i did like the real inspector hound! However, everyone knows the medic sports team are where it at.(Original post by My-My-My)

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012Ok, well clearly it's out of date info that I read(Original post by My-My-My)

But really well done, you must be so relieved that you've passed!
And I put it as applicants/freshers, because I don't want to curse myself if I don't get an A in chem :P ridiculous reason I know... -
Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012
I firmed Birmingham on March 12th and received my immunisation form and health declaration form which I filled in and returned three weeks ago. However, I have not received the CRB form that was mentioned in the offers holder pack. I am deferred entry, should I have received the CRB form or will I get sent it next year?

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012I didn't unfortunately, though i did see a few guys i know rehearsing, i'll definitely have to see footloose!(Original post by My-My-My)

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012Yeh I'd love to join ARTE! And shame I miss Footloose, but I'm sure I'll be getting involved at some point!(Original post by My-My-My)
You'll have to join ARTE when you come to Birmingham
We're doing FOOTLOOSE in November (unfortunately auditions are before summer so it's not open to freshers) but as a boy you could definitely get a part the following year!

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012
I've another question, I was just reading another thread from a girl at Birmingham doing psychology but her boyfriend was also doing medicine there. She was complaining about how hard medicine has been for him and how at Birmingham they try to weed out the weak ones early and there's a high drop out rate and that he has no social life. To what extent is that true? Is the workload harder than at other unis?

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012Quite the contrary, i can't speak for clinical years, but i absolutely untrue pre-clinically. Its what you make of it really. There is potentially a lot of work to do but it depends on the individual. Personally, i did very little work in the term (much to my detriment currently!) and had a cracking social life. Alot of people have a good balanced and inevitably there is a lot of people that go above and beyond the norm and so won't have much free time. There isn't that high a drop out rate, i think its something like 6 people out of 400?(Original post by tomtom415)

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012Good, I'm getting really sick of people saying how Birmingham is this and it's that...I just wish my a levels were finished and I was coming tomorrow :P haha, well that's actually good to hear, and you've still managed? How did you do in January exams? Have you finished your exams yet? How are they going? And wow, I thought the year group was like 350?(Original post by gozatron)

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012Gozatron is a little misleaded, the drop out rate in first year is quite a bit higher than 6. We lost about 15-20 from 400, though many of these were people realising that medicine wasn't for them and transferring courses. Only a few were because of not passing exams. In the second year we lost about 5 and this year only 20 people have resits (no one left after 3rd year last year) so it's expected that everyone will start 4th year. They don't try to "weed you out" it's either your choice or you don't answer the questions correctly in the exam!(Original post by tomtom415)

The work load is no harder than any other medicine course. It's harder and more intense than other courses eg. psychology (maybe this girl didn't expect such a difference?) and for some people this is a shock, especially if you've been able to breeze through your A-levels.
You should expect to work your socks of til you retire at the age of 70! You're holidays are shorter than other students (I've just finished 3rd year today but I'm back in June not September like everyone else) and we only got two weeks at Christmas and one at Easter but if you're committed to the career you should be prepared to sacrifice it. -
Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012The year size has shrunk. My year is the largest (400), the year below about 380, Gozatron's year is about 350 and yours will be 320. This is a national strategy for planning, staffing etc.(Original post by tomtom415)

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012I was only going by the figures given by our esteemed student welfare lecture in freshers ! :P(Original post by My-My-My)

Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012I have my contacts...

Actually I've just finished my Student Project 2 on Social Theory and Health and the tutor (I won't name names but a lecturer you will know) was telling us about how the government are planning for future staffing needs of the NHS and how they're having to reduce the year size. These were the figures I was given. They were complaining because the medical school is given funding per student and a drop of 80 students in 4 years is a significant loss! -
Re: Birmingham Medical School Applicants 2012Yeah, I did(Original post by Tan Theta)
Has anyone with aaab at AS level got an interview/offer? thinking of applying
