BBC moves school TV drama Waterloo Road from Rochdale to Scotland
Award-winning TV drama Waterloo Road is to move from Rochdale to Scotland, the BBC announced today.
It is the end of an era for the show which is now filming its seventh series at the former Hill Top Primary School in Kirkholt.
And it means an uncertain future for stars of the hit BBC1 series with some now facing their final term on screen.
The drama will re-locate in April next year to a new base as part of the BBC’s move to increase network programming from Scotland.
Viewers will see a ‘dramatic and explosive’ storyline played out on screen in early 2012 with the final Rochdale episodes to be filmed this October.
It will result in a number of current teachers and pupils setting up a new school in Scotland, which will also adopt the Waterloo Road name.
It is not yet known how the writers will explain the move. But some familiar faces will leave the TV school which has been a launch pad for young actors and actresses, many of them from Manchester and the north west

Re: BBC moves school TV drama Waterloo Road from Rochdale to Scotland
Wait some of the old students will go and join this new school? so them and their families would just pick up their things and move all the way up in Scotland? bearing in mind the majority of these kids are suppose to be from the lower end of the socio-economic scale... how do they aff - oh never mind.

No other show would do this. It be like moving Holby City to Northern Ireland...Last edited by Reformed2010; 23-08-2011 at 15:45. -

Tbh it'll probably look the same/similar? I wonder how they're actually going to explain the move to scotland... -
Re: BBC moves school TV drama Waterloo Road from Rochdale to ScotlandIt's not because it's Scotland. No area of Britain should be off limits. But after so many years you grow attached to the dialect and slang used by the characters. It becomes part of the show identity. Imagine Emmerdale people having Inner city London accents? imagine Eastenders having Geordie accents?(Original post by supernova92)

No sorry this is just stupid. The idea that teachers and students will pick themselves and move to Scotland. Just silly.

Re: BBC moves school TV drama Waterloo Road from Rochdale to Scotland
I don't really understand the need to move the school/characters. If many of the characters are going to leave anyway, and the show will take on a new feel, why not just end Waterloo Road and start a new show? Don't get me wrong, I like Waterloo Road [despite some of the stupid storylines in recent series] and I've watched it since the very beginning, but it seems silly to try and transplant something rather than creating something new. It just seems silly.

Re: BBC moves school TV drama Waterloo Road from Rochdale to ScotlandOh i agree, i don't understand how they're going to just "pick up and move". At least i think that's what's happening from what i've gathered from the article?(Original post by Reformed2010)

I didn't mind having to listen to the NI accents in Holby though

Re: BBC moves school TV drama Waterloo Road from Rochdale to Scotland
Going to be interesting to see how they pull it off. I can see some teachers (Tom) being moved to a new project because of their exceptional skills working with disadvantaged youths, but characters like Grantly might have a more difficult time getting kept onto..
Don't see how they can manage to keep any of the pupils that don't have teachers as parents. -
Re: BBC moves school TV drama Waterloo Road from Rochdale to Scotland
Students and teachers don't just get together and relocate 200 miles away. What the **** is this? I suspect BBC scotland demanded a better programme from the BBC. You had Casualty that moved to Cardiff and now this. They are trying to spread the service.
Still a very stupid idea. -
Re: BBC moves school TV drama Waterloo Road from Rochdale to Scotland
Oh yay. Another BBC 'Scotland' show filmed and set in Glasgow. Although it hasn't been announced I guarantee you it'll be Glasgow because BBC 'Scotland' is Glasgow-centric biased propaganda
. Plus 'Waterloo Road' does sound like a very Glasgow-esque street name more so than the very real 'Waterloo Place' in Edinburgh.
