    Could someone explain to me why the housing market crashed (as detailed / simply as possibly please).

    The banks gave mortgages to people who couldn't pay them back. The market and prices grew, then the **** eventually hit the fan.

    I would also recommend the documentary "Inside Job" which explains the financial crisis brilliantly. It is also narrated by Matt Damon, which is always a plus.

    Ahhhh that's what they were talking about in the comments... I thought they were getting the Spike lee film wrong I was like ....waaaaat.

    Yes, this is a great film. Really shines a light on the spinless criminals that walked away with everyone's money.
