Bit gutted I'm in Ranmoor

Basically I got my accommodation offer today and I was put in Ranmoor

I wanted Endcliffe though, because I've heard it's a lot more livelier than Ranmoor and there's more of an atmosphere.

I was just wondering how true this is? Because I'm quite a social person so I'd be a bit gutted if Ranmoor was too quiet.

Cheers

I was in this position 2 years ago (can't believe how fast it's gone!!) where I'd applied for Endcliffe and ended up in Ranmoor. I even applied for a Deluxe room and ended up with a normal one so basically what I got given was not at all what I'd chosen and I felt a bit put out by it.

Turns out when I moved in I was in a flat of 11 people and I think only 1 of us had actually put down Ranmoor as a first choice, meaning we were all Endcliffe rejects haha! But like I said, there were 11 of us (there seem to be a lot of flats of large numbers in Ranmoor) so it was definitely a sociable and crazy experience! I definitely think it all depends on what people you get put with.. Alternatively (not to put you off) my friend was put in with a group of 4 girls who didn't drink or go out at all and would sit in a play boardgames most nights. So it's all down to luck of the people!

Ranmoor itself.. I moved in 2 years ago liked I said and it was the first year Ranmoor had been built. There were loads of empty blocks and they were still doing building work to the lawns. I think therefore Ranmoor has an unecessary stigma attached to it (especially the Ridge) for being boring and quiet. But there's no point in listening to this since all you have to go on are 2 years worth of residents. When your year moves in chances are more people have applied this year and all the blocks should be full by now meaning a much livelier atmosphere! The Ridge is great (lovely food, big tv screens, pool tables, comfy leather sofas, friendly bar stuff, cheap drinks deals) - and that's all from 2 years ago so it's probably even better now! The Edge might be bigger but that figures since more people live in Endcliffe.

The only things I didn't like about Ranmoor was that Endcliffe was laid out better in my opinion and Ranmoor is on a hill leading to many drunken disasters climbing up stone stairs. Also the slightly further walk from uni but the 120 bus only costs 50p (take note!!) so it's not that bad.

Seriously, don't listen to the 'Ranmoor is the quiet student village'.. how can it be when no one's moved in yet? It's what you make of it really! I definitely didn't have a 'quiet' experience there :P

If you wanna know anything else about the rooms or what's in the flats etc just ask.. I was in Wimberry D5

Dont be gutted!!!
I was in Endcliffe and i kinda wish i was in Ranmoor because they've got more 10/11 people flats meaning you'll get to meet more people.
Its a bit of a rumour that its quiter, just because in the first few years it wasn't full because tapton was still around (so they had more accomodation than students).

Thanks so much for your responses- really reassured me

Hey Emmgrem, I just wanted to ask if students living at Ranmoor were allowed to go to the same events and bars as those living in Endcliffe?
And did you find that students from both villages intergrated much?

I lived in Ranmoor last year and I can assure you it is NOT quiet at all  Most people in Ranmoor applied to be in Endcliffe, so pretty much everyone there has the same attitude towards partying and socialising as Endcliffe :P You can go to the Edge anytime etc so it doesn't matter, but Ranmoor is newer and much nicer than Endcliffe! You're going to love it

Hey there :] I was in Endcliffe, but loads of my friends were in Ranmoor - so everyone socialises despite of where they live. Endcliffe events tended to be better than Ranmoor's equivalents, but then our bunch would just end up in Endcliffe and have fun here, not a problem. It seemed like flats there were bigger and so it's easy to find like-minded people. Seriously, don't worry, there's so many students here, so many clubs and societies that you will have fun and find friends. Also, if you don't initially, don't worry, just try to be nice and sociable and open - the friends you make in the first weeks usually are not the friends you have at the end of the year anyway!

Hey sorry didn't see this till now as you didn't quote it, but it's okay

Yes everyone intergrates as you find coursemates who live in Endcliffe for example and they meet all their flatmates etc and go to the Edge with them or they go to the Ridge with you etc.
I'm not entirely sure on the 'rules' about it but all I know is that we got a community card when we moved in (this was 2 years ago when Ranmoor was brand new, im about to start 3rd year) but it never got used... This was supposed to be so you could show your 'community ID' for community events but I think they only really kept that up for the really busy events in freshers week and after that you could go along to anything.
I remember the first weekend in Ranmoor, the Ridge gets absolutely packed and it's usually a one-in-one-out basis with your community ID so get down there early if you don't want to be disappointed as it's quite a small capacity place and like I said, that was 2 years ago when some of the blocks like Ramshaw etc were totally empty.. so my guess is that with Ranmoor being a bit more full this time round The Ridge will be packed to begin with.. and then just generally a bit more lively than it was when I moved in for the rest of the year.

Another Ridge tip - the food is sooo good! Curly fries and burgers are a must. And Cheeky Vimtos were a cheap speciality! I do miss it actually.

Halls are so so easy and convenient - just wait till you have to start choosing houses for 2nd year (some more advice for everyone - the uni will start pressuring you to choose with 'housing fairs' as early as October, when you've barely known anyone for more than a few weeks!! :s-smilie: so pleeease don't be pressured like I was, and wait until after xmas to sign for a house when you get to know people better. The houses in Sheffield won't run out I promise! The estate agents just worry everyone into thinking they will to get their hands on your money)
I know it seems stupid to advise you on 2nd year housing when you haven't even had freshers yet - but trust me, in a few weeks time the uni and estate agents will start pressuring freshers to sign for houses!! Word of warning. Sorry to go off track but that is one of the main pieces of advice I would give to freshers!
mate shush my uni hasn't even given me Halls yet, i'm probably going to have to be sorting out renting a flat during my freshers which will be fun
