I have never been away by myself before and I want to take the plunge for my 30th next year.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a female, first time solo traveller? (My birthday is in July, if that helps).
make decisions using common sense , and never ever doubt yourself ,have faith..

I haven't made any firm decisions yet, but I'm thinking of somewhere in Europe and looking to spend as little as possible

If you want to maximise your budget, and go a little off the beaten track, go east.

Oh, and have you looked at interrail tickets?

I was very tempted to go on a trip on my own this summer, it's very hard to get my current friends to do anything, even getting them to leave North Yorkshire is incredibly difficult.

i'm exactly the same. all my friends have either gone off to uni or are too lazy to do anything but stay at home :s u found any good companies?

Please allow me to revive the thread of this dear society.

I haven't been anywhere this summer due to lack of money, but am starting my year abroad in Avignon in two weeks! :woo:

Applying for an intern for next summer, but if that goes awry the coveted 65 litre rucksack is definitely coming out of the loft.
how long does 65ltr last you for btw?

Moved your post here as it's the resurrection of the old thread.

I had mine for a month and it was fine, maybe slightly too big if anything.

When you guys travel do you improvise (sort it out when your in the country) or let the organisations handle it. Ive heard improvising saves alot of monney but I'm just bit worried that I wont be able to organise it when im there. Im thinking about volunteering in Peru and maybe take a spanish class there, if you have some improvising tips I'll be so happy

Im in exactly the same position as you . As im on a gap year im definately gonna go travelling even if its alone, you should too. I'd hate to think I wasted a whole year because i was too afraid to try new things. Have you heard of BUNAC or frontier. Both have pretty good reputations unlike STA or real gap experience who rob you blind for your money (what ive heard).

Re: The Lone Traveller's Base / TSR Travel chat thread
Hi so glad I've found this thread to be honest! I've decided that I want to travel alone for a month or so next summer (probably from the end of July to the end of August 2012).
This would be my first time travelling and I'm seriously considering going to Australia on a £3,000 budget (including flights). I'm hoping to start in Sydney, and then visit as many places in as I can- including Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne . Right now I'm trying to figure out whether to travel around independently or to book an escorted tour.. anyone know which is the cheapest/safest way to do it?

    Any advice is appreciated! Thankyou

Do you guys plan all your flights in advance? If not, isn't it awfully expensive just buying one-way tickets when you need them?

It depends on your personal preference.
Australia is a safe country, and despite its size is easy to get around. In theory, you could do it alone easily for a month - I've met loads of people in hostels here who are doing just that and loving the independence and freedom that travelling alone brings. I'll probably do it at some point next year, as the friends I'm with now don't want to do the same things as I do. The question is whether you actually want to, or do you want to travel with other people? The difference in price between escorted and alone will be negligible I think.

(Btw, don't bother going to Canberra - it's CRAP.)

Usually, yeah. Best to leave a two month window to get the least expensive flight. If that can't be helped, and especially on the road this is a problem if you absolutely have to fly, just grin and bear the price. Some routes (like between all of Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong) are so competitive you might end up finding decent prices anyway.

    By myself I've backpacked/camped

    Munich
First experience was scary but awesome.
    Highlights
Pissing on trains while they were in station to avoid 2 euro toilets
Having a night rough near Memmingen airport.
    Watching Bach's passion.
The random people I met who would make my day.

    Kiev
Watched Hostel before I went here bad idea
Being totally out of my depth!

All around the Netherlands + Antwerp
    Wwoofed was quality

Lone travelling can be a really big confidence booster!

    Hi,

I have just had a moment of clarity, and managed to wrangle time off work from the 8th of dec to the 2nd of jan, really tempted to jump on the train and see where my feet take me.

I am tempted as it is winter to head north and check out Holland, Germany, and possibly norway and some of Scandinavia. Is anyone going and would possibly wanna meet up ? or go together. I am a 21 year old lad from near Bath / Bristol.

Please feel free to add me on facebook.com/mattjenkins1990

Hope to hear from people soon

    Cheers

    Matt xx

Hope you're having fun. I'm strangely content to be in England having been back for 3 months, I think I've killed my travel bug for the time being.

Though I would like to be able to get to France in the new year. Adventurous I know!

For the people sitting umming and arring about whether to take the giant leap and book a flight:

    "Make your choice, adventurous Stranger;
Strike the bell and bide the danger,
    Or wonder,
    Till it drives you mad,
What would have followed if you had."
