Did anyone else get another e-mail at end of february to wait till march for a reply? Plus do u fellow pharmacy students think it would be a good idea to e-mail (and who should I e-mail?) and ask them I wouldn't mind getting a placement in another branch which is of reasonable travelling distance from my house then the ones I have originally chosen? thankyou
Got same email. I don't think you need to email about that because they said they will place you if possible, and I'm pretty sure that means anywhere that they want to place you and they will send you an offer.

I'm in my first year now and finding it difficult to find placement
Nobody has really told me what theyre looking for so if you find out I'd be grateful to know and if I hear anything, I'll let you know too
I think one way would be to call up a local pharmacy and try work experience coz it shows you weren't jobless over the summer and shows you still tried to get something organised.

There are so many students chasing so few placements that competition is now fierce. I prioritise second years over 1st or 3rd years because they are at the right stage for me to get the best out of them and them to get the best from my placement. 3 years ago I had 3 applicants for 2 positions, this year it was 40 for two positions.

What do I look for in terms of experience on the CV? I'm looking for the transferable skills because I know it is hard for you to get placements. My ideal candidate is someone who has worked somewhere like Dixons over summer as a temporary job - you've worked with the public, you've worked as part of a team, you understand that you need to work within rules, you can communicate complicated/technical information to the public and you may have had the responsibility of cash handling.

I would prioritise someone like that over someone who had 5 days of work experience split across 3 or 4 pharmacies as I doubt that the second candidate could demonstrate their transferable skills in the same way as the first candidate.

From my conversations with other recruiters I know that I am not alone in adopting this approach. Think laterally in your first year and think about the work experience that will demonstrate the personal qualities that you need to be effective as a pharmacist. In your second year sell yourself to me with the experience you got in the first year.

I'm a pharmacy manager who employs vac students and I talk to my colleagues who are in a similar role!

We're very aware of the situation out there for you guys and we're trying to be fair. I prioritise second years and I try to go for those who haven't already got a lot of experience to give you a chance.

The previous students I took on worked as bus drivers, in Woolworths, as betting shop assistants and in an electrical shop. The amount of pharmacy experience they had was limited but the wealth of life skills they brought to the placement was incredible and I was able to work with their transferable skills and develop their core pharmacy skills. It was a win-win - I got a good worker, they got a good vacation experience. My first two students are now both qualified pharmacists with good basic grade jobs, my second two students are doing well with their degrees and I know they'll be fine when it gets to going for pre-regs. I don't take the credit for this - they get a limited time with me - but I do try and ensure that they are clear on the skills they've got which make them very appealing to a future pre-reg interview panel.

As placements began last Monday, I thought I would bump the thread and try to get people discussing their thoughts on how their experience is going.

What is your branch like? How helpful are the staff?
How involved are you and what would your typical day consist of?

Hopefully we will be able to provide some information for future applicants.
