Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!I quite like Notts, but I insuranced Exeter. Do you watch Numberphile on Youtube? Some lecturers from there are on it. Sixty Symbols is pretty good too.(Original post by foolscap)
I'd only originally applied to Bath because I needed another uni!
Notts is my insurance, I'm a sucker for a brand new maths building
It was annoying for me, as I went to the Bristol open day which was 4 hours getting there and 4 getting back, and then two weeks later got on the exact same trains to go to bath, just got off one stop earlier....

Haha, I've only been on one open day. Was going to go to Exeter but cancelled it after the Bath open day
-
Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!I hadn't heard of Numberphile before, so I've just watched the Numberphile for 69! I had actually worked out a few weeks ago that 69 is the biggest factorial calculators can do, so I'm feeling pretty smug right now(Original post by Contrad!ction.)

I'll add it to the list of things on the internet that I prefer over revision
On a similar note, I love this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIYMmbHik08
the binary palindrome bit <3 -
Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!Have a look at the one about Graham's Number, that's a good one! I had as well, I always feel smug when they say something I already know(Original post by foolscap)

Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!Wow, ok I definately did not know about Graham's Number.(Original post by Contrad!ction.)

Big Bang Theory
<3
So basically from what i gathered,
g1 = 3(↑↑↑↑)3.
g2 = 3(g1 arrows)3.
g3 = 3(g2 arrows)3.
.....
g64 = graham's number.
so solution to Ramsey theory is between 11 and Graham's Number....
why 64?
I love the way the people talking get more excited as the video goes on. -

No idea, it makes my brain hurt
They get way too happy
Saying that, I got really excited when Matt Parker retweeted me

Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!According to his twitter page, Matt Parker does maths and stand up ! That I have to see(Original post by Contrad!ction.)

Oh, and you're ruining my days revision, keep it up

Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!Matt and James are my favourites. James has his own YT channel, I ended up making far too many dodecahedra after watching that video(Original post by foolscap)

Ugh, I'm finishing off my physics coursework (due in tomorrow) and I'm 200 words over the word limit.

Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!I anticipate many hours watching these people in the near future(Original post by Contrad!ction.)

200 words over the limit, meaning you're just too good, correct?
I've never understand word limits, why not just let people write as much as they feel is necessary, within reason. -
Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!If you like physics then look at Sixty Symbols, they're good too. Did something on the vuvuzela a while ago.(Original post by foolscap)

Bloody hope so
I've just referenced the vlogbrothers as a source for my coursework
...just realised that the video ends on giraffe sex
I was worrying about being able to reach it a few weeks ago, and now I'm over it!

Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!You should get extra marks for doing research, or in this case watching educational physics songs(Original post by Contrad!ction.)

and at the end it only gives a picture of giraffe sex. Really, it depends if the examiner has a sense of humour........
Mmm i watched the sixty symbols answers part one, being a fan of the big bang theory i'm interested to know what string theory is. Sometimes i wonder if i should have done a science subject. -
Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!Pfft, I need extra marks. The neutrino anomaly was not a good choice of topic.(Original post by foolscap)

I do physics and most of what we do seems to be 'rearrange this equation, put this number in' or a tiny bit of explanation, so you're not really missing out. Some stuff's pretty interesting though, like time dilation and particle physics. Got any physics books? I quite like 'In Search of Schrodinger's Cat'.
Also this, in case you have sig display off. Vi Hart is brilliant and I love how loads of people are arguing with her

Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!I don't have any physics books, i'm a rare breed of mathematician who doesn't have any knowledge of science......(Original post by Contrad!ction.)

I watched vihart 9.999 reasons why .999 is 1, (not the april fools one) and somewhere near the end my head exploded. -
Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!What's the other subject? I did Chemistry at AS, but ugh.(Original post by foolscap)

I keep getting people messaging me telling me how annoying that video is
Some of her other videos are pretty cool too.

Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!Mmm American accents can be pretty annoying, but it works on girls, american guys sound stupid. As to my other subjects I would refer you to page 51 of this thread when we started talking.(Original post by Contrad!ction.)

Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!I think it's more the trolling part of the video that annoys them than the accent - although yes, sometimes the accent can be a bit annoying because for some reason it sounds drawly and lazy.(Original post by foolscap)

Haha, that was a week ago, I forget things

Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!A lot would be an understatement. The majority of what we do is proof to be honest... Apart from the applied modules obv. But algebra/analysis/most of computing/stats is all proof. Even some of calculus involves proof. [They're all the 1st year modules ive taken so far].(Original post by foolscap)
kk I like calculus and I like matrices so that seems good. Proofs can be annoying but still something I would like to learn, I've heard that there's a lot of proofs in uni maths. I also noticed you mentioned stats and not mechanics, I really dislike mechanics, are there any compulsory mechanics modules in the bath maths course?
And yes Re: mechanics. Calculus second semester is compulsory and is mainly mechanics (though its all retaught using vectors; the lecturer says knowing mechanics beforehand can actually be a disadvantage). -
Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!Yup; we don't do any of the generating power series at all. We do however rigorously prove them in analysis, and then apply them in proofs within the other modules. Fun times (Y)...(Original post by roblee)
Yes, anything written in that format is a power series. I'm not a mathematics undergrad so Quadratic is welcome to correct me on this, but I imagine that after refreshing on these methods there'll be more focus on actually working on the series rather than just generating them (which is boring by itself). -
Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!Well I have not started yet (will start in Sept.) but I guess I would love to specialise in strategic management!!(Original post by andrei.varban)
That is great. I did BBA at my home university. What are your future plans after finishing it? What is your field of interest?
I love change and strategic management.
My plans for ahead are:
-get 1 or 2 yrs exp. in UK

Re: Bath 2012 Applicants thread!Haha. I get to stay at your hotels for free right? Cheers.(Original post by Nikstar95)
